Farmers are increasing pressure on federal officials over fertilizer prices and competition within the industry. More than 170 farmers from 13 states gathered Friday in Iowa for what's being called a “Fed Up” fertilizer hearing. The discussion focused on major fertilizer companies including Mosaic, Nutrien, and CF Industries. Organizers say fertilizer prices have doubled — and at times tripled — since 2020, while fertilizer companies have generated more than 20-billion dollars in profits for shareholders during the past five years.
USDA Deputy Secretary Stephen Vaden told producers the department is committed to examining fertilizer pricing and enforcing antitrust laws. Vaden says USDA is working on actions designed to provide greater transparency into what's been happening within the fertilizer market. Iowa Corn Growers Association President Steve Kuiper says farmers intend to continue gathering evidence and pushing for investigations. Producers say their ultimate goal is straightforward — greater competition and what they consider a fair and free fertilizer market.
