Applications are being accepted for the 2025 Joint Citizen's Law Enforcement Academy in St. Joseph, hosted by the St. Joseph Police Department and Buchanan County Sheriff's Office.

St. Joseph Police Sergeant Jeremy Peters says the academy gives residents an inside look at what law enforcement does on a day-to-day basis

"Kind of bridges the gap between the citizens and the department and just gives them a really good look at what we do day in and day out with all of our specialty divisions and units we have," Peters tells KFEQ Hotline host Barry Birr.

The academy features several sessions between March 25th and May 20th, every Tuesday, giving residents an inside look at what law enforcement does.

Jeremy Peters says each class will feature a different department within the offices

"For instance, our K-9 handlers with the police department and the sheriff's office, the conservation department, they'll come in and they'll bring their dogs in and meet everyone in the class," Peters says. "And then they'll have a big demonstration where they show how they work their dogs, some of it's for tracking, sniffing cars, apprehensions."

You can register online by clicking HERE or contact Peters  for more information. Peters says there are about 20 seats remaining open for this year’s academy.

Peters also says that even if you've taken the law enforcement academy before, you are welcome to come back and might even learn something new you did not before.
