Nanetta “Nan” B. Carter 1928 - 2023

Nanetta “Nan” B. Carter, 95 of Savannah, MO stepped up to bat in heaven on December 30th, 2023.  She was born on July 31st, 1928 in Fillmore, MO to William & Maymie (Ramsey) Turner.  She married Warren Carter on April 29th, 1956 in Cameron, MO and he preceded her in death in 1998.  

Nan graduated from Fillmore High School in 1946. She attended summer schools at Northwest Missouri State University teaching in one room rural schools until her graduation from the university in 1953. That year, she joined the faculty at Trenton, MO school system as a physical education instructor. The school system also included North Central Missouri College. She was a member of the College Foundation Board and an avid supporter of their programs.  After her marriage to Warren Carter in 1956, the couple moved to Princeton, MO and then in 1959 on to Bethany, MO, where she accepted a job at the South Harrison School District. She taught there until her retirement in 1982 in her 32 years in the field of education, Nan taught five years in rural schools, five years at Trenton High School and College, and 22 years in South Harrison.

Her lifetime passion has been softball and all women's sports. In 1961, Nan and her husband, Warren, organized their first women's fast pitch team, known as the North Missouri CT's. She coached for over 40 years and still considers her former players "her girls." Her teams earned seven state championship titles and eight runner-up titles. Nan's CT Timers, composed of players 35 and older, also won two 35-and-over national championships. “Her girls’” are all privileged to have played for her and are thankful for the many opportunities she provided them. She has touched a multitude of lives in her 95 years.

In addition to being an educator, coach and mentor, Nan’s other accolades include induction into the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame, St. Joseph Mustangs Hall of Fame, the Missouri ASA Softball Hall of Fame and the North Central Missouri College (NCMC) Athletic Hall of Fame. She was recognized with the Sprint Spirit Award at the WIN for KC ceremony in 2007, named the Lead Gift Contributor from 2016-2017 at NCMC and awarded the USA Softball Missouri Lifetime Achievement Award in 2018. Nan has also established scholarships for NCMC student athletes each year, in memory of her late husband, Warren, and herself. And so, she will continue to touch lives.

Funeral Services will be 10:00am Saturday, January 6th, 2024 at Breit-Hawkins Funeral Home in Savannah, MO.  Visitation with family viewing hours will be 5:00pm-7:00pm Friday, January 5th, 2024 at Breit-Hawkins Funeral Home.  Memorial contributions can be made to Warren & Nanetta Carter Athletic Scholarship at North Central Missouri College Fund: NCMC Foundation 1301 Main St. Trenton MO, 64683.
