David Levi Wilbourn, 88 of Effingham, KS, passed away Friday January 12, 2024 in his home surrounded by his family. David was born on November 24, 1935 to Josh and Mattie (Carethers) Wilbourn, in Mulberry, Arkansas. He married Lois Marie (Tull) Wilbourn on November 19, 1955 in New Albany, MS. He served in the United States Navy in the personnel office on the USS-FURSE-DDR882 from 1954-1958. After leaving the Navy David worked at Good John’s Sash and Door from 1958-1962. David then worked at the Federal Penitentiary from 1962-1985 where he finally retired in Seagoville, TX. After this retirement, he raised hogs and cattle on the family farm. David enjoyed fishing, bird hunting and spending time with his family. Survivors include five sons, David (Grace) Wilbourn, Effingham, KS, Josh (Debbie) Wilbourn Effingham KS, Troy Wilbourn, Atchison, KS, John (Penny) Wilbourn, Effingham, KS, Gabe (Katie) Wilbourn, Lancaster, KS. Two daughters, Mischell (Tom) Herrig, Leavenworth, KS, MaryAnn Murray, Atchison, KS, 30 grandkids and numerous great grandkids, two sisters, Sue Mulvaney, Potter, KS, and Mary Jo (Kenneth) Walker, Potter, KS. While he was blessed with many loving nieces and nephews, he was fortunate to have his nephew Joseph D Tull Jr. with him the last few months as a caregiver. David was preceded in death by his parents, wife, two sisters, Hattie (James) Pennington and Virginia Herken, daughter-in-law Janice Wilbourn, son-in-law James Murray, brother-in-law Roy Mulvaney, and a grandchild Elicia Collins. David has been cremated under the direct care of the Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home in Atchison, Kansas. David will be laid to rest at a later date at Sunset Memory Gardens, Atchison KS.
