Janice Marie Jewell, 85, of Atchison, KS died on Sat. Nov. 22, 2025, at the Atchison Senior Village.

Janice was born on Oct. 11, 1940, in Clay Center, KS the daughter of John Richard and Edna Victoria (Hedberg) Hammel. She graduated from Clay County Community High School in 1958 and attended cosmetology school.

She was married to Donald Charles Jewell on April 9, 1960, at Fort Riley, KS. Mr. Jewell preceded her in death on Dec. 9, 2005

Janice was a hard worker who held both herself and others to high standards. She was artistic with a talent for painting, fashion and decorating. She enjoyed cross-stitch, bowling, golfing and swing dancing with her husband.

Jan’s fashion sense led her to own her own clothing store, Mode O Day in Leavenworth, which she later sold and afterwards worked for Bohm’s Department Store and then JC Penney. She then worked and retired from Armed Forces Insurance.

Janice and her sister, Vickie, her best friend, enjoyed traveling with their spouses and became great support for one and other after the loss of their spouses. She also was an avid Chiefs fan.

Survivors include a son, Jeffrey Jewell of Atchison, KS, stepson, Lee (Margie) Jewell of Leavenworth, KS, a brother, Gary (Carol) Hammel, Wichita, KS and a sister Vickie K. McCann, Trivoli, IL, eight grandchildren and several great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Donald, two sons Jay and Chip Jewell and a stepson Brad Jewell, three brothers Jack Eldon, Loren, and Elroy Hammel, sister Doris Lietzan and granddaughter Emilee Jewell.

Cremation services are planned with a graveside service at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, Dec. 1, 2025, at the Sunset Memory Gardens, Atchison. A celebration of life will be held at a later date. Memorial contributions may be sent in care of the Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home to help with final expenses.
