Gary E. Moss I, 75, St. Joseph, Missouri, passed away Monday, March 25, 2024.
He was born on November 6, 1948, to Elmer and Lula Moss in Elwood, Kansas.
After graduating high school, Gary joined the United States Army. He bravely served during the Vietnam War. His time in the service was a major part of his life, and something he was very proud of.
In 1976, Gary started a career as a towboat captain that spanned more than 45 years. He eventually retired and had a vessel named in his honor.
On April 27, 1992, he married Judith Ann Deford. They shared 29 years together before she passed away in 2021.
Gary was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting, fishing, golfing and riding his motorcycle. He was a lifelong and active member of the VFW, and also a member of the American Legion and Freedom Riders.
He loved his beloved dog, Dolly, and spending time with his family. He enjoyed the company of his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Gary leaves behind a legacy of bravery and compassion, and he will be missed by all who had the honor of knowing him.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Judy Moss; and siblings, Nona, Raedean, Janie, Charles, Jimmy, Danny, Ray, Elton, Carol, Susan, Emma, Donna, Dixie and Jerry.
Survivors include his brother, Dennis Moss; children, Janie Lucas (Odes), Gary Moss II (Maggie), Shaun Shepard (Michelle), and Niki Paillilo (Andrew); numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren, as well as many nieces and nephews.
