Shavaun Vernon, of Bendena, Kansas, passed away surrounded by love, leaving behind a legacy of music, faith, and deep devotion to her family. She was born on March 26, 1956, in Kansas, to Joe and Alberta McChesney, and spent her formative years in McLouth, Kansas.

Shavaun’s life was a beautiful expression of creativity and purpose. A gifted musician and passionate teacher, she earned her education from McLouth High School, El Dorado Community College, and the University of Kansas, where she received her degree in music. She shared her talents generously, teaching music at Midway Denton and inspiring decades of private students whose lives were forever enriched by her guidance.

Music was more than a talent to Shavaun—it was her language of worship and the way she expressed her deep love for her Creator. Whether teaching, playing, or simply listening, music flowed through every part of her life.

Beyond her passion for music, Shavaun found joy in life’s simple and meaningful moments. She had a special love for cats, cherished her family deeply, and created a home filled with warmth, laughter, and unwavering support.

She is survived by her Mother Alberta McChesney, beloved sons, Drew Vernon (Heather Vernon) and Sean Vernon (Kizzi Vernon); her cherished grandsons, Josiah, Braden, Gavin, Rennick, and Stanley Vernon; her bonus granddaughter, Sarah Folsom; and her great-grandson, Hendrix Folsom. Each of them carries forward her spirit, strength, and love.

Shavaun was preceded in death by her father, Joe McChesney, Sister Brenna Dwight and her husband, Duane Vernon.

Her legacy lives on in every note played, every lesson taught, and every life she touched. She will be remembered for her gentle strength, her unwavering faith, and the way she made the world more beautiful through music.

We are celebrating Shavaun's life in a way that honors who she was:

2-4 p.m., Saturday 3/28, at the Hiawatha Christian Center, 519 N 1st Street Hiawatha, KS 66434

In lieu of a service we will celebrate with a time of freestyle sharing of music.  Whether piano, singing, or any other instrument, we invite anyone who so desires to participate. All are welcome

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Chapel Oaks Funeral Home in Hiawatha, Kansas, to support an education fund for her grandchildren.
