A Kansas City man was arrested in Buchanan County Tuesday for vehicle theft, and can now add assault on an officer to his charges.

29-year-old Lukas Schlax was arrested Tuesday morning for vehicle theft on MM Hwy in southeast Buchanan County.

Buchanan County Sheriff Bill Puett says Schlax fought with officers both at the scene and in the county jail Tuesday.

"He fought with officers on the scene while being taken into custody," Puett said. "He assaulted one of the officers in the jail. He's been charged with (third-degree) assault on a law enforcement officer."

Schlax has been charged on two counts of assaulting an officer and one for vehicle theft - both felony offenses.

Puett says Schlax has 19 outstanding warrants, including some for robbery and burglary. The car he was driving was reported stolen out of Kansas City.

Schlax is set to appear in Buchanan County Court on Friday morning.
