John E. Halter, 82, of Maysville,Mo, passed away Thursday, February 1, 2024, at his home in Maysville. He was born September 27, 1941, in rural DeKalb County, to Lawrence and Viola (Morgan) Halter. He graduated from Maysville High School in 1959. He was united in marriage to Twila Pittsenbarger on August 28, 1964 at the Fairport United Methodist Church.
John worked as a carpenter, retiring from White Construction in 1995, In addition to his working career in construction, John enjoyed farming with his father-in-law, Lawrence “Ziggy” Pittsenbarger. As long as his health permitted, he enjoyed woodworking, gardening, and was always happy to help out neighbors and friends doing handy work and needed projects. He was often told that if anything could be fixed, they knew he could do it.
John loved sports, especially basketball and softball, both as a participant and spectator. He received All Conference and State honors as a MHS basketball player and enjoyed many years of softball with the Fairport softball teams. He remained a loyal fan of Maysville High School and NWMSU athletics and attended as many events as possible that his godchildren, neighbor girls (Torri and Paige), and other young friends participated in at MHS, NWMSU, and other colleges. He also enjoyed the Royals and KC Chiefs and was looking forward to watching the Chiefs in Super Bowl LVIII. In addition to sports, he loved being in the great outdoors hunting and fishing with his friends and the 40 years of sharing Lake Viking activities with the Sexton family. Although they have no children of their own, John and Twila were blessed to have been accepted into the families of many, sharing all the special events in their lives. They also enjoyed many annual vacations throughout the United States, and in later years, they made several trips annually to Branson, MO especially to see The Oak Ridge Boys, having been their fans and attending approximately 200 of their concerts since the 1980's.
John was a member of the Maysville United Methodist Church,serving many years on the Trustees Board; Fairport Lions Club, many years as treasurer; and a former member and past president, of Crestview Estates Board of Directors.
John was preceded in death by his parents; step-father, Richard Jolley; nephew, Douglas Halter; and in-laws Lawrence Pittsenbarger and Ida Pittsenbarger Holcomb.
Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Twila; brother, Harold (Barbara) of Mission, TX; nephews, Steven (Andrea), of Leawood, KS; Michael Halter, Mission, TX; niece, Julie Raczkowski, Lebanon, MO; brother-in-law, Larry Pittsenbarger (Carolyn), Blue Springs, MO; nephew-in-law, Lance Pittsenbarger (Jennifer), Mission, KS; niece-in-law, Laura Eaton, Independence, MO; godchildren, Jaclyn Stoll (Clayton) & Bryan Haley of Maysville, MO; Jennifer McQuinn (Ryan) and their children Katherine and Maddison, Stanberry, MO; aunt, LuEtta Morgan, Maysville, MO; great nieces and nephews, the special families, and many relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, February 7, 2024, at Turner Family Funeral Home with burial immediately following at Fairport Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
