Denise Lynn “Sis” Coursen, 72, St. Joseph, Missouri, passed away Thursday, January 29, 2026.
She was born June 1, 1953 to Leo F. and Delores M. (Ryser) Vertin in St. Joseph, Missouri.
Denise served with unceasing devotion as a member and cantor of St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church. She harmonized her faith and love for singing as a proud member of the Celebration Choir.
Her love for music extended beyond the church walls. Denise's passion for melody and rhythm was evident in her everyday life.
A master of the board and card table, Denise enjoyed the thrill of a good game with loved ones. Her competitive spirit was always present, whether she was strategically placing tiles in Scrabble or outwitting opponents in a spirited round of cards.
Above all, she cherished her family. Her son and grandchildren were the pride and joy of her life.
She was preceded in death by her father, Leo Vertin and brother-in-law, Jerry Root.
Survivors include her son, Benjamin Coursen (Amanda); grandchildren, Cooper, Clara, and Cruise Coursen; mother, Delores Vertin; siblings, Pamela Boyd (Richard), Paula Bahr (Larry), Kevin Vertin (Lori), Alan Vertin (Trudy), Karla Root, Richard Vertin (Linda), and Brent Vertin (Brenda); numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Mass of Christian Burial 10:00 A.M. Friday, St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church. Interment St. Joseph Cemetery, Wathena, Kansas. The family will gather with friends one hour prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church.
