William 'Bill' Doyle Maxwell 1932 - 2023

William Doyle (Bill) Maxwell, age 90, died September 18, 2023, at his home. 

Bill was born December 5, 1932 in St. Joseph, Missouri, to Helen and Clarence Maxwell. He attended Musser, Hall, and Bliss Junior High schools. He graduated from Central High School in 1950. 

Bill served four years (1951-1955) in the Navy during the Korean war and was aboard the LST 561, LST 742, and the USS Mount Mt McKinley AGC-7. He was honorably discharged as a Radioman Second class in 1955. 

Bill then attended St. Joseph Junior College for two years prior to transferring to the University of Kansas School of Architecture. Upon graduation, Bill worked for Brunner & Brunner Architects for 8 years, then Herschman & Douglas Architects for 7 years. Bill was a registered as an Architect in Missouri and was assigned to a number of buildings and projects in St. Joseph and area. Bill became employed in the engineering department at the St. Joseph Quaker Oats facility, where he designed food processing equipment installation and did mechanical engineering surveys. Bill was among 15 mid-level employees who were down-sized in 1995 after 20 years. 

Bill then taught two engineering Classes at Missouri Western College for three years and later oversaw two Missouri Western construction projects for two years. 

Bill was a 33rd degree Scottish Rite mason and was a past master of Charity-Zeredatha # 189 lodge. 

Bill was preceded in death by his wife Mary Barnett Maxwell of 62 years, sister Helen Audrey Wood, brothers Robert (Bob) Maxwell and Marvin Donald Maxwell. 

Bill is survived by his sister Myrtle Irene Holland of Wellsville, Kansas, sons Michael Maxwell, Omaha Nebraska, David Maxwell and wife Jenna Nguyen, three grandchildren, Dr. Amanda Maxwell, Jonathan Maxwell, and Kimberly Maxwell of Pearland, Texas. 

Celebration of life will be held at 11:00 AM Saturday, September 23, 2023 at the Wyatt Park Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). Full Military Honors will held on the church grounds following the service.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial donations be sent to the “Friends of the St. Joseph Animal Shelter”
