Canada and the United States remain at an impasse in trade negotiations as a threatened 50 percent U.S. tariff on hundreds of Canadian goods approaches. Canadian negotiators are seeking relief from existing tariffs while trying to prevent the new duties from taking effect. U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer says Canada's treatment of American dairy products is one of the major sticking points. He points to Canada's tariff-rate quota system, which limits some U.S. dairy imports before significantly higher duties apply.
