GRAIN MARKET SUMMARY

Grain markets finished mixed Thursday, with corn futures trading near unchanged, soybeans posting moderate losses and wheat recovering some of the ground lost during Wednesday's sharp selloff.

December corn futures declined half a cent to settle at $4.51¼ per bushel, while March futures slipped a quarter-cent to $4.64¾. May corn managed a quarter-cent gain, closing at $4.73¾. Corn continues facing pressure from USDA's October production estimates, which projected a national average yield of 181.2 bushels per acre and production exceeding 16 billion bushels. Large domestic supplies remain a significant obstacle, although ethanol production and export demand continue providing underlying support.

Soybean futures finished lower, with November contracts declining 4¾ cents to settle at $12.19¾ per bushel. January soybeans lost 3¼ cents to close at $12.34¾, while March futures declined 2½ cents to $12.43¾. The soybean market continues evaluating strong export inspections and renewed Chinese buying against increasing competition from Brazil. Currency weakness in Brazil has raised concerns that Brazilian soybeans could become more competitively priced in international markets. Soybean meal also experienced substantial losses, with December futures dropping $6.40 per ton to $329.30.

Wheat futures rebounded Thursday following several difficult sessions. December Chicago wheat gained 4¾ cents to settle at $6.03¾ per bushel, while December Kansas City wheat advanced 2¼ cents to $6.45¼. The recovery followed Wednesday's sharp losses that pushed Chicago wheat below the six-dollar level. However, global export competition and uncertainty surrounding Black Sea grain shipments continue influencing the market.

Overall, Thursday's grain trade reflected relative stability in corn, continued selling pressure in soybeans and a modest recovery in wheat. Traders remain focused on export demand, harvest progress and international market developments heading into the final trading session of the week.

LIVESTOCK MARKET SUMMARY

Livestock futures finished mixed Thursday, with live cattle continuing to decline, feeder cattle showing a combination of modest gains and losses, and lean hog futures recovering in several nearby contracts.

Live cattle futures remained under pressure following Wednesday's sharp selloff. October live cattle declined 10 cents to settle at $227.27 per hundredweight, while December futures dropped $1.02 to $226.30. February live cattle also lost $1.02, finishing at $229.47. The cattle market continues struggling to establish support despite tight domestic supplies. Traders remain cautious about cash cattle negotiations, packer demand and wholesale beef values following the recent decline in futures prices.

Feeder cattle futures finished mixed. October feeders declined 32½ cents to settle at $351.10 per hundredweight, while November futures lost 27½ cents to $346.47. January feeders slipped 15 cents to $341.95. However, several deferred feeder contracts posted gains. March and April futures each advanced 50 cents, while May feeders gained 60 cents. The mixed performance reflects continued uncertainty surrounding cattle market direction, with lower feed costs offering some support while recent volatility weighs on buying interest.

Lean hog futures showed improvement Thursday, particularly in nearby contracts. December hogs climbed $1.22 to settle at $59.82 per hundredweight, while February futures gained 55 cents to $64.72. April hogs finished unchanged at $70.62. The gains provided some relief following Wednesday's sharp selloff in nearby hog futures. However, the market remains sensitive to cash hog prices, wholesale pork demand and expectations for domestic production.

Overall, Thursday's livestock session reflected continued weakness in live cattle, mixed feeder cattle performance and a partial recovery in lean hog futures. Traders will be watching cash livestock markets and wholesale meat values for direction heading into Friday.
