St. Joseph Superintendent Van Zyl chosen as new leader of Minnesota district

It appears the St. Joseph School District will be searching for a new leader.

A news report from Apple Valley, Minnesota states St. Joseph School Superintendent Doug Van Zyl has been chosen as the new superintendent for the Lakeville Area School District.

The Sun Thisweek reports the Lakeville Area School Board will enter contract negotiations with Van Zyl this week. The board hopes to have Van Zyl begin duties July 1st, replacing Michael Baumann, who is retiring.

Van Zyl was one of five candidates interviewed for the position and one of two finalists.

Van Zyl is a native of Minnesota. He has been with the St. Joseph School District since 2018. Van Zyl has also led public school districts in Fort Dodge, Iowa and Harrisonville, Missouri.

The two school districts have comparable student populations with just under 11,000 students each.
