Several St. Joseph entities will be on hand at East Hills Mall tomorrow (Sat.) to collect expired medication during Drug Prescription Take Back Day.
Julie Wiedmer with the Youth Alliance says the mobile unit for the Buchanan County Drug Strike Force will be at the mall from 10am to 2pm on Saturday.
"Community members can just drive up and hand us their unused and unwanted prescriptions," Wiedmer tells KFEQ/St. Joseph Post. "And then we take them and sort them into different categories and then we just dispose of those."
The St. Joseph Youth Alliance and the Buchanan County Drug Strike Force will be collecting the medication in front of the old Sears store at East Hills Mall.
Wiedmer says the event gives community members a safe way to dispose of their expired medications
"Get rid of those prescriptions they're not using and keep them out of the wrong hands," Wiedmer explains. "So, we don't want people who are struggling with addiction to get ahold of those, we don't want kids to get ahold of those, we don't want them flushed cause that's in our water systems."
Wiedmer says this event is a quick and easy way to get those medications out of the house and keep them out of the wrong hands.
Wiedmer says they'll collect drugs ranging from over-the-counter medication to prescription drugs
"We take all of that, inhalers also, so any of those things I mean if you have bottles of Tylenol that's expired sure bring it, regular prescription medications great, and also the sharps and inhalers as well," Wiedmer says.
If you have medication to dispose of and can't make it to the mall tomorrow, you can find disposal bins at the Buchanan County Sheriff's Office and various pharmacies.
