UPDATE: Heavy rain causing flooding and road closures

UPDATE (11:20 a.m.) - St. Joseph officials are asking motorists to avoid the area of Alabama to Parker Road and King Hill to 59 Highway due to flooding.

According to a news release from the City of St. Joseph, crews are assisting residents in that area out of flooding homes and some streets are closed due to water over the road.

As of 11:30 a.m., the Missouri Department of Transportation says one portion of Buchanan County U.S. Route 59 has reopened while the other flooding closure has been extended. Rushville to Atchison, Kansas, including the Amelia Earhart Bridge is open and the closure from the south city limits of St. Joseph has been extended to Route 116 at Rushville.

St. Joseph and Buchanan County officials urge motorists to use extreme caution today, stating deep water covers multiple roadways in Buchanan County.

U.S. Highway 59 in southern Buchanan County between Rushville and Atchison, Kansas has been closed, due to flooding across the roadway.
