ST. JOSEPH, Mo. — Pony Express Therapy Dogs (PETD) of Northwest Missouri celebrated its most successful year to date, logging 620 visits across six counties in 2024. The organization, which began in 2017 with just 10 handler-dog teams, has since expanded to include 21 therapy dogs and 25 working teams.

PETD volunteers dedicate their time to providing comfort and companionship to people of all ages. The teams visit care centers, schools, libraries, universities, a coffee shop, and a childcare center, offering stress relief, story time, and emotional support. Some teams also participate in hospice visits and community events such as festivals and youth camps.

“Our volunteers come from all walks of life, including education, medicine, truck driving, and government service,” said Bill Luce, chairman of PETD. “One of our most inspiring handlers even participates from a wheelchair, proving that anyone with a passion for helping others can make a difference.”

Care center residents eagerly anticipate the visits, often finding solace in the presence of the dogs. “I feel so much joy when they come… they are a blessing,” one resident at Country Squire shared.

The therapy dogs, ranging in age from 2 to 12 years, include purebreds, designer dogs, mixed breeds, rescues, and shelter dogs, varying in size from 5 to 150 pounds. All PETD dogs are well-trained and must pass a certification process aligned with Canine Good Citizen (CGC) standards. Teams recertify every two years to maintain PETD’s high standards.

As demand for therapy dog visits continues to grow, PETD is actively seeking new volunteers. The organization will hold an orientation for prospective teams on March 19, 2025, at 6:30 p.m. at the Buchanan County Extension Center. Those interested must reserve a seat by March 18 by calling 816-279-1691.

Pony Express Therapy Dogs is an all-volunteer organization overseen by the University of Missouri’s Buchanan County Extension Office. The group operates through membership dues and donations. More information is available on the University of Missouri Extension’s Buchanan County website.
