John R Sommers 1943 - 2023

Weatherby, Missouri…John R Sommers, 80, of Weatherby, Missouri entered into the presence of his Saviour on October 22, 2023, at home with family by his side. His battle with Parkinson’s is over and the Crown of Life is won! The last several months he often expressed his desire to go home to Jesus. He was a faithful member at Maysville Christian Fellowship.

John was born in Uniontown, Ohio, on Aril 1, 1943, to Rudy and Fannie Byler Sommers. On September 18, 1964, he married Caroline Sommers and they shared 59 blessed years together.

Loving father to Tim and wife Keturah, Weatherby, MO, Wanda and husband Jonas Schrock, Litchfield, CA, Marion and wife Rhoda, Hindsville, AR, Paul and wife Faith, Bangor, CA, Marcus and wife Anita, Wolfe City, TX, Roseanna and husband Nathaniel Graber, LaRussell, MO, Stephen and wife Twyla, Weatherby, MO, Martha and husband Urie Kanagy, Accident, MD, Titus and wife Rose, Hindsville, AR, Sharon and husband Ben Stoltzfus, Knob Knoster, MO.

He is also survived by 51 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, 17 step-grandchildren, 39 step-great-grandchildren. One brother Henry and Lydiann, three sisters, Nancy Troyer, Miriam and Lester Otto, Sadie and Albert Marner. In-laws Paul and Ruth Miller, Bill and Katherine Sommers, Ed Sommers, Ray and Marty Troyer, Renee Sommers, Nelson and Becky Sommers, Sharon Lam, Gaylon and Melody Sommers, Laverne and Leona Sommers, Dave and Melodie Sommers.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one grandson, two brothers Seth and Wally, one sister, Vera Miller, 3 brothers-in-law, Eli Miller, Phil Lam, Floyd Sommers, one sister-in-law, Miriam Sommers.

John and Caroline began their married life in Hartville, Ohio. They then moved to Minerva, Ohio where they began farming. They spent several years in Tennessee before moving to Fairview, Missouri in 1982. They were sent to Weatherby as part of an outreach from the Fairview congregation and lived there until his death.

John was a dairy farmer for 25 years before moving to Weatherby where he was co-owner of North Country Truss until he retired. He enjoyed spending winters in Florida for the last 10 years. He was diagnosed with Parkinson’s in 2011. He always enjoyed traveling and continued to do so even though it became more difficult. He took his last trip on earth July 27-29, 2023, just before he lost his ability to walk. He would often pray for healing from his Parkinson’s and God has answered that prayer.

Visitation will be from 2:00 – 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. Tuesday, October 24, 2023, at Maysville Christian Fellowship Weatherby, Missouri. Funeral service is 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, October 25, 2023, at Maysville Fellowship with burial immediately following at Maysville Fellowship Cemetery.
