
LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — A 19-year-old man who shot and killed a Lincoln, Nebraska police officer has been sentenced to 70 years to life in prison.
Felipe Vazquez has been sentenced for the August 2020 shooting of Officer Luis "Mario" Herrera, who grew up in Faucett.
Vazquez was sentenced to another 59 to 86 years for attempted assault on a second officer.
Vazquez, 17 at the time, shot Herrera as officers attempted to serve an arrest warrant at Vazquez’ Lincoln home on an earlier stabbing death.
Herrera died 12 days later.
Herrera, a 23-year-old police veteran, was the first Lincoln police officer killed in the line of duty in more than 50 years. Herrera graduated from Mid-Buchanan High School. He graduated from the University of Missouri in 1993.
