In honor of those lost on September 11th, both Missouri Western and Northwest Missouri State University will hold remembrance events.

Missouri Western will hold the first ever stair climb at Spratt Memorial Stadium walking over 2,000 steps, the equivalent of the 110 flights of the World Trade Center.

Director of the Center for Military and Veterans Services Chelsey Clark says the stair climb is a good opportunity to put yourself in the shoes of first responders on that day.

"To kind of remember what it is that they went through and the extraordinary acts that they performed that day in order to help as many people as they could," Clark tells KFEQ/St. Joseph Post. "So, it's good to honor and remember all the people who helped on 9/11 and to not forget that."

Registration begins at 7:30am on Sunday with the walk starting an hour later. Clark says for those that can't climb the stairs, there will also be a memorial ceremony in Spratt Hall

"It's going to be an indoor, not nearly as physical, kind of memorial ceremony to still allow people to either do both or if they don't want to do the stair climb to still come out and remember 9/11," Clark says.

The ceremony will begin at 1:30pm in the Enright Community Room or room 214. The mayor and others will speak at the ceremony and a moment of silence will also be held.

In Maryville, Northwest Missouri State University held its third annual stair climb at Bearcat Stadium. A tradition that was made with two little words in mind: Never Forget.

The event also asked attendees to walk 2,071 steps at the football stadium.

Senior Zak Moore, President of the Student Veteran Organization helped plan the event. He says being one of the organizers was special to him.

"Because it means that I'm able to be a part of history and able to keep a tradition alive and make sure that something as important as paying homage to all those brave first responders, I can help keep that alive and make sure that that day doesn't get lost in history," Moore explains.

Maryville residents will also hear Northwest pay homage to those lost in the attacks on Sunday as the Memorial Bell on campus will chime at the time each of the planes crashed on September 11th.
