A Lincoln, Nebraska police officer who died from a gunshot wound suffered while trying to serve an arrest warrant had northwest Missouri roots.

Luis “Mario” Herrera grew up in Faucett and graduated from Mid-Buchanan High School. He graduated from the University of Missouri n 1993.

Herrera died Monday from a gunshot wound suffered two weeks ago while attempting to arrest a 17-year-old on an assault charge. The suspect has now been charged with murder.

Herrera was a 23-year veteran of the Lincoln Police Department. The department states Herrera was an exceptional investigator, a selfless teammate, and a tireless public servant.

Nebraska Governor Pete Ricketts has ordered flags throughout the state be flown at half-staff until sunset on September 11th, stating Herrera’s service and sacrifice will never be forgotten.
