College has been settled.The American
Civil Liberties Union of Kansas had filed a lawsuit against the community
college, alleging the college instituted a plan to reduce the number of black
students on the northeast Kansas campus. The ACLU filed a brief stipulation of
dismissal Monday.The ACLU filed suit March 19th in federal court.Highland had been accused of directing coaches to recruit more
white athletes and of forcing black athletes to undergo excessive scrutiny
before being offered scholarships.Highland had responded by asserting its recruiting is not
determined by a student’s race or ethnicity. It denied it ever instructed
coaches to exclude out-of-state athletes from recruitment.Associated Press contributed to this article.
