WASHINGTON (AP) — A congressional hearing devolved into an angry confrontation between a senator and a witness on Tuesday after Republican Sen. Markwayne Mullin of Oklahoma challenged Sean O’Brien, the president of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, to “stand your butt up” and settle longstanding differences right there in the room.

Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders, the chairman of the Senate panel that was holding the hearing, yelled at Mullin to sit down after he challenged O’Brien to a fight. Mullin had stood up from his seat at the dais and appeared to start taking his ring off.

“This is the time, this is the place,” Mullin told O’Brien after reading a series of critical tweets O’Brien had sent about him in the past. “If you want to run your mouth, we can be two consenting adults. We can finish it here.”

The two men never came face to face in the hearing room. But they hurled insults at each other for around six minutes as Sanders repeatedly banged his gavel and tried to cut them off. Sanders, a longtime union ally, pleaded with them to focus on the economic issues that were the focus of the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee hearing, which Sanders was holding to review how unions help working families.&nbsp;

“You are a United States senator!” Sanders yelled at Mullin at one point.&nbsp;Kansas Senator Roger Marshall is a member of the committee.

Mullin, a frequent critic of unions, and the Teamsters head have sparred before. Earlier this year, O’Brien posted repeatedly about Mullin on X, formerly known as Twitter, calling him a “moron” and “full of s---” after Mullin criticized him in a hearing.

In another social media post, which Mullin read aloud at Tuesday’s hearing, O’Brien appeared to challenge Mullin to a fight. “You know where to find me. Anyplace, Anytime cowboy,” O’Brien had posted.

The exchange escalated from there, with Mullin telling O’Brien that “this is the place” and asking if he wanted to do it right now.

“I’d love to do it right now,” O’Brien said.

Mullin replied: “Well, stand your butt up then.”

“You stand your butt up,” O’Brien shot back.

When Mullin got up from his chair, Sanders yelled at him to sit down, banged his gavel several times and told both of them to stop talking.

“This is a hearing, and God knows the American people have enough contempt for Congress, let’s not make it worse,” Sanders said.

As Mullin persisted, O’Brien retorted: “You challenged me to a cage match, acting like a twelve year old schoolyard bully."

The two traded angry insults for several more minutes — each called the other a “thug” — with Mullin at one point suggesting they fight for charity at an event next spring.

O’Brien declined, instead suggesting they meet for coffee and work out their differences. Mullin accepted, but the two kept shouting at each other until the next senator, Democratic Sen. Maggie Hassan of New Hampshire, started her questioning by talking over them.

After the hearing, Sanders called the exchange “absurd.”

“We were there to be talking about, and did talk about, the crisis facing working families in this country, the growing gap between the very rich and everybody else and the role that unions are playing in improving the standard of living of the American people,” Sanders said. “We’re not there to talk about cage-fighting.”

Asked later about the skirmish, Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell demurred. “It’s very difficult to control the behavior of everybody who is in the building,” McConnell said. “I don’t view that as my responsibility.”

Republican Sen. Kevin Cramer of North Dakota said that references were made to the back-and-forth in a GOP conference meeting after the hearing but that no one should take it too seriously.

“It’s a dynamic place," Cramer said. "We don’t wear the white wigs anymore.”

COWLEY COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a knife attack and have made an arrest.

Just before 11p.m. November 10, police were dispatched to Chestnut Avenue and Summit Street in Arkansas City, according to a media release.

First responders found a 40-year-old man who had injuries, including stab wounds.&nbsp; EMS transported the victim to Wesley Medical Center in Wichita for treatment.&nbsp;

Through their initial investigation, officers learned there was an altercation in the area of C Street in Arkansas City. Officers quickly identified a group of juveniles involved in the incident. One juvenile was arrested. Police said charges will be presented to the Cowley County Attorney’s office in the coming days for the remaining juveniles.

The victim has been released from the hospital.

McALLEN, Texas (AP) — The Biden administration’s plan to build new barriers along the U.S.-Mexico border in South Texas calls for a “movable” design that frustrates both environmentalists and advocates of stronger border enforcement.

The plans for the nearly 20 miles (32 kilometers) of new barrier in Starr County were made public in September when the federal government sought public input. The following month, the administration&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/border-wall-biden-immigration-texas-rio-grande-147d7ab497e6991e9ea929242f21ceb2">waived 26 federal laws</a>&nbsp;protecting the environment and certain species to speed up the construction process.

“The United States Border Patrol did not ask for this downgraded border wall," Rodney Scott, a former U.S. Border Patrol chief said.

Construction is moving forward despite President Joe Biden's campaign promise not to build&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/joe-biden-donald-trump-mexico-immigration-nancy-pelosi-0524645024b4ff1919aa35fc3f3e7db8">more wall</a>&nbsp;and amid an increase in migrants coming to the nation's southern border from across Latin America and&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/chinese-emigration-us-mexico-border-darien-381c215ff30f0f2349c2ea118aa280c6">other parts of the world</a>&nbsp;to seek&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/immigration-biden-border-title-42-mexico-asylum-be4e0b15b27adb9bede87b9bbefb798d">asylum</a>. People such as Scott who want more border security believe the barriers won't be strong enough to stop people from crossing illegally. Environmentalists, meanwhile, say the design actually poses a greater risk to animal habitat than former President Donald Trump’s border wall.

Biden has&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/biden-us-mexico-border-wall-immigration-texas-f99fd10257292a898618236df3613979">defended the administration's decision</a>&nbsp;by saying he had to use the Trump-era funding for it. The law requires the funding for the new barriers to be used as approved and for the construction to be completed in 2023.

Most barriers on the border were erected in the last 20 years under Trump and former President George W. Bush. Those sections of border wall include Normandy-style fencing that resembles big X's and bollard-style fencing made of upright steel posts.

Biden's barrier will be much shorter than the 18- to 30- foot (5.5 to 9-meter) concrete-filled steel bollard panels of Trump’s wall. It also could be temporary.

An example of the style of barrier his administration will use can be seen in Brownsville, about 100 miles (161 kilometers) southeast of Starr County. Metal bollards embedded into 4-foot-high (1.2-meter-high) cement blocks that taper toward the top sit along the southern part of a neighborhood not far from the curving Rio Grande.

Over the last year, the Rio Grande Valley region was the fourth-busiest area for the number of people crossing into the U.S. illegally, though it was the busiest in previous years.

With the design planned for Starr County, federal border agents will be able to move around the fencing, said Democratic U.S. Rep. Henry Cuellar, who represents Starr County. “So it’s one of those things where if they want to direct traffic, they can move it.”

Scott agreed that the “moveable” fences can be used as an emergency stopgap measure to block off access in some areas. But he warned that if the fencing isn't placed far enough into the ground, someone might be able to use a vehicle to shove it out of the way, provided they don't mind damaging the vehicle.

Laiken Jordahl, a conservation advocate with the Center for Biological Diversity, said mountain lions, bobcats, javelinas, coyotes, white-tail deer, armadillos, jack rabbits, ground squirrels, and two endangered, federally protected plants — Zapata bladderpod and prostrate milkweed — may be affected.

Jordahl said the design the Biden administration is using “will block even the smallest species of animals from passing through the barrier.”

“The one advantage for making it shorter is, I guess if somebody falls while they’re climbing over it, they aren’t falling as far,” Scott Nicol, a board member of the Friends of the Wildlife Corridor, said.

Nicol, who lives in the Rio Grande Valley, is familiar with the type of barriers Biden's administration will use, the terrain, and the weather in Starr County. He is concerned about unintended consequences, particularly on the Rio Grande that separates U.S. and Mexico.

“You know, if Starr County gets hit by a big rainstorm and the water has to drain into the river, these walls — whether it’s the bollard walls or the Jersey barrier walls — are going to block the movement of that water and dam it up,” Nicol said.

Last month, the Center for Biological Diversity along with about 100 other organizations sent the U.S. government a letter pleading for reconsideration of environmental protection laws. To date, they have not received an answer.

Biden's movable wall criticized by those who want more border security

KANSAS CITY —A man has been charged in connection with the shootings at the Independence Center that injured three persons, including one critically, according to Jackson County Prosecutor Jean Peters Baker.

MarkAnthony Greer, 21, Independence faces three counts of Unlawful Use of a Weapon and three counts of Armed Criminal Action charges.

According to court records, on Nov. 10, officers responded to Independence Center Mall on a reported shooting. An officer on off-duty assignment at Dillards arrived on the shooting scene first. 

He found three injured victims. One of the three was a woman who was most critically injured and reportedly was pregnant. 

Surveillance video showed a group that included the critically injured woman, encountered a second group in the mall that included Geer.

 The two groups passed each other at the mall entrance. A verbal argument began. A victim uninvolved with either group was shot in the leg. The rest of the second group ran to the parking lot. The female victim had not followed closely with her group when it encountered the other group. She appeared to be sitting down on a bench about 30 feet away. Witnesses identified the shooter as Geer or a man who matched his appearance.

Suspect charged in mall shooting that critically injured pregnant woman

HARVEY COUNTY —The Harvey County Commission approved regulation updates at its meeting Tuesday that will ban commercial wind and utility-scale solar renewable energy projects in the county. The vote was unanimous, according to a media release.

The regulations will take effect once legal notification has been published in the County’s newspaper of record.

The Commission approved updating Harvey County Unified Development Code Section 16.14, which addresses commercial renewable energy. The revisions prohibit commercial wind and utility-scale solar projects, while allowing limited-scale solar construction. Personal wind and solar energy installations, such as those used at residences, are permitted.

The changes to the code were recommended by the Harvey County Planning and Zoning Advisory Board. The advisory board voted at its Oct. 17 meeting to approve updating Section 16.14, which sent the revisions to the Harvey County Commission for review.

In October 2022, the county commission revised its commercial renewable energy regulations to update language regarding setback distance, permissible locations, restrictions and financial protections. Later, the Planning and Zoning Advisory Board requested the county commission institute a six-month moratorium on commercial renewable energy construction.

The county commission put a six-month moratorium in place on Feb. 21. The moratorium was later extended on Aug. 1 to continue through Dec. 5, 2023.

Kansas county bans commercial wind, some solar projects

WASHINGTON — Congress on Monday appeared to be on the edge of approving another short-term government funding bill this week, though several hurdles remain if lawmakers want to stave off a partial government shutdown when the current funding law expires at the end of the week.

Democratic leaders and President Joe Biden expressed some skepticism about House Republicans’ so-called “laddered” stopgap spending bill on Monday, but they didn’t rule out voting for the measure that would fund parts of the government through mid-January and other programs through early February. Approving it would mean lawmakers could leave for the Thanksgiving holiday without an immediate spending crisis hanging over them.

The top three House Democrats — Leader Hakeem Jeffries of New York, Whip Katherine Clark of Massachusetts and Caucus Chair Pete Aguilar of California — wrote in a “Dear Colleague” letter they were “carefully evaluating the proposal.”

“While House Republicans have abandoned a laddered funding approach with multiple expiration dates, we remain concerned with the bifurcation of the continuing resolution in January and February 2024,” they wrote. “In addition, the failure of House Republicans to address the national security and domestic supplemental funding priorities of the American people is also troublesome.”

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, a New York Democrat, offered lukewarm comments about the stopgap spending bill that’s often referred to as a continuing resolution, or CR. It would avert a partial shutdown when the current CR ends on Friday at midnight.

“For now, I am pleased that Speaker Johnson seems to be moving in our direction by advancing a CR that does not include the highly partisan cuts that Democrats have warned against,” Schumer said, referring to House Speaker Mike Johnson, a Louisiana Republican.

“The speaker’s proposal is far from perfect, but the most important thing is that it refrains from making steep cuts, while also extending funding for Defense in the second tranche of bills in February, not the first in January,” he said.

Schumer noted there could be obstacles to getting the short-term funding bill out of the House, given growing opposition from far-right members of the House Republican Conference.

“The next few days will tell all in the House and I hope the speaker does not buckle to the loud voices on his hard right flank to add partisan cuts as the price for keeping the government open,” Schumer said.

Biden didn’t commit to signing or vetoing the short-term spending bill on Monday, saying he wants to see what happens.

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, a Kentucky Republican, backed the House’s short-term spending bill, saying it would avoid a partial government shutdown from beginning just before Thanksgiving and allow Congress to keep working on must-pass legislation.

“There’s a lot of work left to do — aside from the remaining full-year appropriations bills, glaring national security priorities continue to demand our attention from Israel to Ukraine to the Indo-Pacific and of course our southern border.” McConnell said.

“House Republicans have produced a responsible measure that will keep the lights on, avoid a harmful lapse in government funding and provide the time and space to finish that important work,” McConnell added.

Johnson, facing his first real test of governing, on Saturday released the “laddered” spending bill that would fund some of the federal government through mid-January and the rest through early February.

That, in theory, could give Congress and the Biden administration more time to reach agreement on the dozen, full-year government funding bills that were supposed to become law by the start of the fiscal year on Oct. 1.

The 32-page&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://rules.house.gov/sites/republicans.rules118.house.gov/files/FY24CR2FINAL_xml%5B76%5D.pdf">stopgap spending bill</a>&nbsp;would provide funding until Jan. 19 for the departments and agencies within the Agriculture-FDA, Energy-Water, Military Construction-VA and Transportation-HUD spending bills.

The remaining federal programs funded in the other eight spending bills would be covered until Feb. 2. Those include the Commerce-Justice-Science, Defense, Financial Services, Homeland Security, Interior-Environment, Labor-HHS-Education, Legislative Branch and State-Foreign Operations bills.

The legislation would also extend many of the programs within the farm bill through Sept, 30, 2024, giving lawmakers significantly more time to work out a bipartisan version of the legislation that passes every five years.

The House could vote on the bill as soon as Tuesday, showing whether Democrats are willing to support the legislation.

Several House Republicans have already announced their opposition to the bill, including Ohio’s Warren Davidson, Georgia’s Marjorie Taylor Greene, Virginia’s Bob Good and Pennsylvania’s Scott Perry.

“I will not support a status quo that fails to acknowledge fiscal irresponsibility, and changes absolutely nothing while emboldening a do-nothing Senate and a fiscally illiterate President,” Perry wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter.

Davidson wrote on X that the “current short-term funding proposal includes a 1-year extension of the Farm Bill (no reform), status quo policies, and status quo funding levels. Disappointing is as polite as I can muster. I will be voting NO.”

“Hopefully, the consensus will result in a more reasonable bill,” Davidson wrote.

🎥Congress nears another government shutdown deadline is Friday at midnight

JOHNSON COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities investigating two suspects in connection with a shooting&nbsp; at a Kansas mall are asking the public for any phone videos or photos taken of the incident, according to a social media report from Overland Park Police.

Just before 4:30p.m. Sunday, police responded to an armed disturbance at the Oak Park Mall in 11400 block of W.95th in Overland Park, according to Officer John Lacy.

  As the two male suspects were trying to exit the mall near the food court, three plain clothes detectives identified themselves and attempted to apprehend both suspects. 

 During the apprehension, one male suspect resisted arrest, a struggle occurred, and the suspect was able to obtain one of the detective’s issued firearm. 

 The suspect was able to pull the trigger, firing one shot. This suspect was apprehended.  The other suspect ran north of the mall and was immediately apprehended.  No one was injured in this incident.

“The absence of a Code, however, has led in recent years to the misunderstanding that the Justices of this Court, unlike all other jurists in this country, regard themselves as unrestricted by any ethics rules,” the justices wrote. “To dispel this misunderstanding, we are issuing this Code, which largely represents a codification of principles that we have long regarded as governing our conduct.”

The code leaves compliance to the justices themselves and does not create any other means of enforcement.

The issue has vexed the court for several months, over a series of stories questioning&nbsp;<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=utXfYIM7kZI" target="_blank">the ethical practices of the justices</a>. Many of those stories focused on Justice Clarence Thomas and his failure to disclose travel and other financial ties with wealthy conservative donors including&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/supreme-court-ethics-finances-justices-thomas-alito-08ec6e88a7c29c55c9d3991903ca0db7" target="_blank">Harlan Crow</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://www.propublica.org/article/clarence-thomas-secretly-attended-koch-brothers-donor-events-scotus" target="_blank">the Koch brothers</a>. But Justices&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/alito-supreme-court-ethics-fishing-trip-thomas-924606543d555cdfc87595428fd7619c" target="_blank">Samuel Alito</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/supreme-court-sotomayor-book-sales-ethics-colleges-b2cb93493f927f995829762cb8338c02" target="_blank">Sonia Sotomayor</a>&nbsp;also have been under scrutiny.

Public trust in and approval of the court is hovering near record lows, according to a Gallup Poll released just before the court’s new term began on Oct. 2.

As recently as last week, Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Ill., chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, said the justices could quiet some of the criticism and a Democratic push to impose an ethics code on the court by putting in place their own policy.

Durbin’s panel has been planning to subpoena Crow and conservative activist&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/eea7dac688f0408b97be0ebf605a583e" target="_blank">Leonard Leo</a>&nbsp;about their roles in organizing and paying for&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/supreme-court-clarence-thomas-ethics-trips-920da69fb952beaa69f84ad16562f60f" target="_blank">justices’ luxury travel</a>.

The committee has been investigating&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/supreme-court-ethics-documents-conflicts-9fa2847e60e11601c872c3ba3eea12a3" target="_blank">the court’s ethics</a>&nbsp;and passed an ethics code, though all 10 Republicans on the panel voted against it.

Republicans complained that Democrats were mostly reacting to decisions they didn’t like from the conservative-dominated court,&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/abortion-supreme-court-decision-854f60302f21c2c35129e58cf8d8a7b0" target="_blank">including overturning the nationwide right to an abortion</a>.

The proposal would require that justices provide more information about potential conflicts of interest. It would allow impartial panels of judges to review justices’ decisions not to step aside from cases and require public, written explanations about their decisions not to recuse. It would also seek to improve transparency around gifts received by justices and set up a process to investigate and enforce violations around required disclosures. The Democratic bill had little prospect of becoming law in the Republican-controlled House, much less the closely divided Senate.

The push for an ethics code was jump-started by a series of stories by the investigative news site ProPublica detailing the relationship between Crow and Thomas. Crow has for more than two decades paid for nearly annual vacations, purchased from Thomas and others&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/clarence-thomas-harlan-crow-supreme-court-ethics-7e5d967b1174f224497e53955c55434f" target="_blank">the Georgia home</a>&nbsp;in which the justice’s mother still lives and helped pay for the private schooling for a relative.

ProPublica also reported on Alito’s Alaskan fishing trip with a GOP donor, travel that Leo helped arrange.&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/supreme-court-ethics-donors-politics-4b6dc4ae23aac75d4fccb1bcff0b7e0b" target="_blank">The Associated Press reported</a>&nbsp;that Sotomayor, aided by her staff, has advanced sales of her books through college visits over the past decade.

The court’s initial step on ethics, in the spring, did not mollify critics. Roberts declined an invitation from Durbin to testify before the Judiciary panel, but the chief justice provided a “Statement on Ethics Principles and Practices” signed by all nine justices that described the ethical rules they follow about travel, gifts and outside income.

The statement provided by Roberts said that the nine justices “reaffirm and restate foundational ethics principles and practices to which they subscribe in carrying out their responsibilities as Members of the Supreme Court of the United States.”

The statement promised at least some small additional disclosure when one or more among them opts not to take part in a case. But the justices have been&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/supreme-court-ethics-thomas-kagan-alito-a398a4093576eff1694dcfc3374b2a1a" target="_blank">inconsistent in doing so</a>&nbsp;since.

GREENE COUNTY—One person died in an accident just after 6:30p.m. Monday in Greene County.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported a 2013 Yamaha&nbsp; FZ6R driven by Joseph M. Castillo, 32, Willard, was eastbound on U.S. 160 a mile and one half north of Springfield.

The driver lost control of the motorcycle. It traveled off the right side of the road and he was ejected. EMS transported Castillo to Mercy Hospital where he was pronounced deceased. He was not wearing a helmet, according to MSHP.

&nbsp;JACKSON COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a shooting outside a daycare center in Grain Valley, Missouri.

Just before 6p.m. Monday, police were dispatched to shots fired outside Milestone Academy,&nbsp;1401 S Buckner Tarsney Road, according to a media release.

First responders found a man and woman&nbsp; dead in the parking lot.&nbsp; Police are investigating the incident as a murder-suicide as part of an isolated domestic dispute. There were no other injuries.

Milestone Academy will be closed on Tuesday. Police have not released the names of the deceased.

2 dead after shooting outside Grain Valley daycare

WASHINGTON (AP) —U.S. health officials are warning doctors to be on the lookout for possible cases of lead poisoning in children after at least 22 toddlers in 14 states were sickened by lead linked to&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/lead-fruit-pouch-recall-schnucks-fda-ff3ade3e5032357e922d6036cff81c8c">tainted pouches</a>&nbsp;of cinnamon apple puree and applesauce.

Children ages 1 to 3 were affected, and at least one child showed a blood lead level eight times higher than the level that raises concern, the&nbsp;<a href="https://emergency.cdc.gov/han/2023/han00500.asp?ACSTrackingID=USCDC_511-DM117142&amp;ACSTrackingLabel=HAN%20500%20-%20General%20Public&amp;deliveryName=USCDC_511-DM117142">Centers for Disease Control and Prevention</a>&nbsp;said.

There’s no safe level of lead exposure, but the CDC uses a marker of 3.5 micrograms per deciliter to identify children with higher levels than most. The affected children's blood lead levels ranged from 4 to 29 micrograms per deciliter.

The reported symptoms included headache, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, a change in activity level and anemia.

The illnesses are part of an outbreak tied to&nbsp;<a href="https://www.fda.gov/food/outbreaks-foodborne-illness/investigation-elevated-lead-levels-cinnamon-applesauce-pouches-november-2023?utm_medium=email&amp;utm_source=govdelivery">recalled pouches</a>&nbsp;of fruit puree marketed to kids from the brands WanaBana apple cinnamon fruit puree and Schnucks and Weis cinnamon applesauce pouches. The products were sold in stores and online.

Parents and caregivers should not buy or serve the products, and kids who may have eaten them should be tested for lead levels. Children who are affected may show no symptoms, experts said.

Lead exposure can lead to serious learning and behavior problems. Heavy metals like lead can get into food products from soil, air, water or industrial processes, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics.

More children sickened by lead in tainted applesauce pouches

RENO COUNTY —Hutchinson Correctional Facility (HCF) inmate 55-year-old Michael Rogers died at the facility Monday, according to a media release from the Kansas Department of Corrections.

 The cause of death is unknown and is pending the results of an independent autopsy.

Per protocol, when a resident dies in the custody of the Kansas Department of Corrections (KDOC), the death is under investigation by the KDOC and the Kansas Bureau of Investigation. The investigation is ongoing.

Rogers was serving a 354-month sentence for a conviction of one count of First-Degree Murder in Shawnee County, Kansas.

Inmate convicted of murder dies in Kansas prison

KANSAS CITY—A jury on November 9 convicted a Kansas City, man of sexual acts with a minor, according to Jackson County Prosecutor Jean Peters Baker.

The jury found 46-year-old Chad J. Stark guilty of three counts of Statutory Sodomy, two counts of Statutory Rape 2nd Degree and one count of Child Molestations 4th Degree. The defendant will be sentenced at a future hearing.

To protect the victim's identity, the district attorney's office did not release&nbsp; the probable cause statement.

Jury convicts Kansas City man of sexual acts with a minor

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2017 Dodge SUV driven by Natiya D.&nbsp;Williams, 27, Lawrence, was westbound on U.S. 40 Highway two miles west of U.S. 59.

The SUV crossed the center line into the eastbound lane and struck a 2023 Nissan Sentra driven by Paul C. Duncan, 58, Lawrence. After impact a 2017 GMC SUV driven by Angela D. Chance, 44, Lawrence ran over debris on the roadway. 

Duncan was pronounced dead at the scene and was transported to the county coroners office.

EMS transported Williams to KU Medical Center and Chance to Lawrence Memorial Hospital. All three drivers were properly restrained, according to the KHP. Three juveniles were present in the Dodge SUV; juvenile record is protected data, according to the KHP.

Kansas man dead, 2 injured after 3-vehicle crash

SALINE COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities investigating a September home invasion robbery in Salina have a suspect in custody.

Over the weekend, the Sedgwick County Sheriff's Office notified the Salina Police Department that they had captured&nbsp;41-year-old Phyroom “Thaloe” Ketkan of Salina.

Just before 9:30p.m. September 19, police were dispatched to the 300 block of North Penn Avenue in Salina, regarding an armed robbery.

Three victims inside the home reported two subjects entered the back door unannounced and demanded money. One of the suspects threatened the victims with a long gun, while the second suspect was in possession of a knife.

While trying to disarm the suspects, one of the victims was stabbed with the knife. The suspects fled the area prior to police arrival.

A Saline County District Court issued an arrest warrant for Ketkan. He <a href="https://ssc.sedgwickcounty.org/InmateSearch/Details.aspx?Id=743896">remains jailed in</a> Sedgwick County on over $300,000 in bonds, according to online jail records.

&nbsp;Ketkan will be returned to Salina to face requested charges that include Aggravated Robbery, Aggravated Burglary and Aggravated Battery, according to Salina Police Sergeant Kyle Tonniges.

The incident affected four victims who reported two suspects invaded their home with a large butcher knife and a rifle-like gun.

SPD Sergeant Kyle Tonniges said the department learned the location of suspect Phyroom Ketkan, a 41-year-old Salina man, in Wichita, so the department informed the Sedgwick County Sheriff's Office.

"We contacted them over in their warrants division and said, 'Hey, we got this guy — we think that this is his address,' and I don't know if that was what resulted in his arrest or if they just came across him," Tonniges said. "I don't know the details surrounding the rest of it, other than a sheriff's officer picked him up."

Tonniges said the Sedwick County Sheriff's Office will extradite the suspect, Ketkan, back to Salina to face the following charges —

● Aggravated Robbery● Aggravated Burglary● Aggravated Battery

Police capture Kansas home invasion, robbery suspect

WASHINGTON (AP) — The U.S. Army Special Operations Command on Monday identified the five Army aviation special operations forces killed when&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/us-military-aircraft-crash-mediterranean-31bfeed4b656206885d35f7e4fca133f" target="_blank">their helicopter crashed</a>&nbsp;in the Eastern Mediterranean over the weekend, calling each a “national treasure” whose loss cut deeply.

The military’s European Command said the UH-60 helicopter went down during an air refueling mission as part of military training.

The five service members who died were Chief Warrant Officer 3 Stephen R. Dwyer, 38, of Clarksville, Tennessee; Chief Warrant Officer 2 Shane M. Barnes, 34, of Sacramento, California; Staff Sgt. Tanner W. Grone, 26, of Gorham, New Hampshire; Sgt. Andrew P. Southard, 27, of Apache Junction, Arizona; and Sgt. Cade M. Wolfe, 24, of Mankato, Minnesota. They were all part of the Army’s 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment based at Fort Campbell, Kentucky.

The commander of the Army Special Operations Command, Lt. Gen. Jonathan Braga, said the fallen soldiers “hail from rare patriotic families with deep military service ties that span multiple generations and formations.”

“This is devastating news that reverberates across the entire Special Operations community,” Braga said on Monday in a statement. “Every loss is tough, but in this case, service to the Nation is truly a family business and it’s hard to express the amount of sorrow that we all feel right now.”

The fallen soldiers were highly decorated, with multiple combat deployments in addition to responding to deployments with no notice, sent overseas to respond quickly to various national security needs.

Dwyer received his commission in 2009 from the U.S. Military Academy in West Point, New York. He served as an MH-60M pilot, mission planner and instructor pilot and deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan. He was called up multiple times on no-notice deployments to support national security objectives, the Army Special Operations Command said. His awards and decorations include the Bronze Star Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal and the Air Medal with Combat device among many others.

Barnes, also an MH-60M pilot, graduated from Gonzaga University in Spokane, Washington, in 2011. He was assigned to Korea and completed deployments to Afghanistan and Iraq. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross with Valor device and the Air Medal with Combat device among other campaign awards.

Grone enlisted in the Army in 2017 as a UH-60 repairer. He served as a flight instructor and and MH-60M crew chief for the 160th. He deployed to Afghanistan and multiple times to Iraq, and he was awarded the Air Medal with Combat device, the Army Commendation Medal and the Army Achievement Medal with combat device among many other awards.

Grone’s parents, Steve and Erica Grone, said of their son in a Facebook post that they were “beyond proud of what you became and believed in. Thank you for all these amazing years. Please watch over us. Love you and can’t express how much you will be missed.”

Southard enlisted in the Army in 2015 as a UH-60 repairer and served as an MH-60M crew chief. He was first assigned to Fort Bliss, Texas, upon completing advanced individual training, and he completed a 13-month rotation to Task Force Sinai in support of ongoing peacekeeping operations. He deployed to Afghanistan and was awarded two Army Commendation medals and an Army Achievement medal among other citations.

Wolfe enlisted in the Army in 2018 as a UH-60 repairer and served as an MH-60M crew chief. His awards and decorations include two Army Commendation medals and an Army Achievement medal.

The U.S. has built up its force presence in the Eastern Mediterranean and the Middle East in response to&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/israel-palestinians-gaza-hamas-rockets-airstrikes-tel-aviv-11fb98655c256d54ecb5329284fc37d2" target="_blank">Hamas’ Oct. 7 attack on Israel</a>. There are two carrier strike groups operating in the region, U.S. Air Force squadrons have received additional crews and warplanes, and U.S. special operations forces have been added to help Israel in efforts to rescue hostages taken into Gaza.

Army IDs soldiers killed in accident over Mediterranean

WICHITA, Kan. (AP) — A Wichita-area police officer will not be charged with a crime for shooting a man walking toward him and refusing to drop a weapon that was later found to be a replica BB gun, the local prosecutor announced Monday.

Sedgwick County District Attorney Marc Bennett said that under Kansas law, the Goddard police officer, whose name has not been released, is immune from prosecution over the death in February of 39-year-old Michael James Trask, of Lake Afton.

Bennett issued a 16-page report noting that state law protects an officer from being prosecuted for using deadly force when the officer “reasonably believes” it is necessary to prevent death or great bodily harm to the officer or another person. The shooting occurred about 5 miles (8 kilometers) south of Goddard.

Bennett's report said the officer tried to stop Trask for a traffic violation when a short pursuit began. After the vehicle eventually stopped and Trask left his vehicle with what appeared to be a gun, the officer repeatedly told him to drop the weapon, the report said.

Trask refused and continued walking toward the officer in what the report called a “deliberate” manner. The officer then shot at him eight times, hitting him twice.

A woman who said she was Trask's wife later called dispatchers and said he was suicidal and armed with a loaded gun, according to the report.

“When the officer made the decision to pull the trigger, he was doing so in self-defense,” Bennett told reporters during a Zoom briefing.

Bennett said his office received the case about a month ago and authorities had to wait on the results of Trask's autopsy, which was done in July.

 </figure>Sedgwick County District Attorney Marc Bennett said that under Kansas law, the Goddard police officer, whose name has not been released, is immune from prosecution over the death in February of 39-year-old Michael James Trask, of Lake Afton.Bennett issued a 16-page report noting that state law protects an officer from being prosecuted for using deadly force when the officer “reasonably believes” it is necessary to prevent death or great bodily harm to the officer or another person. Kan. officer who shot, killed man armed with a BB gun won't face charges

SEDGWICK COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating after human remains were found in Sedgwick County.

Just after 6:30 p.m. Saturday, police responded to a call reporting human remains found in a field by a passerby near 1400 S. Hoover, according to Officer Kris Gupilan.

Upon arrival at the scene, officers observed the remains, which were subsequently confirmed to be of human origin. 

The officers and investigators conducted a thorough search of the immediate vicinity for any additional evidence.&nbsp;
