OSBORNE COUNTY —A Kansas pilot avoided injury in an accident that occurred just before 9p.m. Saturday in Osborne County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 1991 Air Tractor crop sprayer piloted by Garrett Handley, 24,&nbsp; Palco, lost power at west 230th drive just off U.S. 281 ten miles South of Osborne.

As the pilot attempted an emergency landing the wing struck a tree branch causing the aircraft to spin into the north ditch and&nbsp; strike a second tree.

Handley was not injured.&nbsp; The cause of the crash is remains under investigation.

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) —&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/houthis">Yemen’s Houthi rebels</a>&nbsp;hit an oil tanker in the Red Sea with a ballistic missile early Saturday, damaging the Panama-flagged, Greek-owned vessel in their latest assault over&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/israel-hamas-war">the Israel-Hamas war in the Gaza Strip</a>, officials said.

Though the Houthis did not immediately claim the assault, it comes as they claimed to have shot down another U.S. military’s MQ-9 Reaper drone over Yemen and have launched other attacks on shipping, disrupting trade on a key maritime route leading to the Suez Canal and the Mediterranean Sea.

The attack around 1 a.m. struck the oil tanker Wind, which recently docked in Russia and was bound for China, the U.S. military’s Central Command said. Both China and Russia maintain ties over military equipment and oil to Iran, the Houthis’ main benefactor.

The missile strike “caused flooding which resulted in the of loss propulsion and steering,” Central Command said on the social platform X. “The crew of M/T Wind was able to restore propulsion and steering, and no casualties were reported. M/T Wind resumed its course under its own power.”

The British military’s United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations center and the private security firm Ambrey similarly acknowledged the attack earlier Saturday. Ambrey said it caused a fire aboard the Wind.

It can take the Houthis hours — or even days — to claim their attacks.

The Houthis have launched attacks on shipping in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden, demanding Israel ends the war in Gaza, which has killed more than 35,000 Palestinians there. The war began after Hamas-led militants attacked Israel on Oct. 7, killing 1,200 people and taking some 250 others hostage.

The Houthis have&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/yemen-houthi-rebel-attack-israel-hamas-war-bf077f026a9f177ec87f4131d695cafc">launched more than 50 attacks</a>&nbsp;on shipping, seized one vessel and sunk another since November, according to the U.S. Maritime Administration.

Houthi attacks have dropped in recent weeks as the rebels have been targeted by a U.S.-led airstrike campaign in Yemen. Shipping through the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden still remains low because of the threat, however.

The Houthis claimed that they shot down the Reaper on Thursday with a surface-to-air missile. They described the drone as “carrying out hostile actions” in Yemen’s Marib province, which remains held by allies of Yemen’s exiled, internationally recognized government.

Since the Houthis seized the country’s north and its capital, Sanaa, in 2014, the U.S. military has previously lost at least five drones to the rebels.

Reapers, which cost around $30 million apiece, can fly at altitudes up to 50,000 feet and have an endurance of up to 24 hours before needing to land.

U.S. military: Terrorist missile strikes oil tanker in the Red Sea

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — A 41-year-old man has been acquitted in the 2016 killing of a pregnant woman and her boyfriend at a Topeka apartment.

The jury's verdict of not guilty Friday in the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/general-news-063a0a9dfbcdfe1af65a85e0345fb022">capital murder</a>&nbsp;and rape case against Yanez Sanford was met with an angry outcry from the slain woman's father, Charles Trotter, who was asked to leave the courtroom.

“This is all about truth and honesty, and what was served today was not that,” Trotter told&nbsp;<a href="https://www.cjonline.com/story/news/local/2024/05/17/jury-acquits-yanez-sanford-of-capital-murder-in-topeka-triple-killing/73675194007/">The Topeka Capital-Journal</a>&nbsp;as he stood outside the courthouse with a wailing relative.

His daughter, 20-year-old Camrah Trotter, was killed as she called 911 after her boyfriend, 23-year-old Dominique Ray, was fatally shot. Prosecutors said two men had waited for Ray, opening fire when he arrived at the apartment with his cousin.

Trotter’s daughter, who was 4 at the time and is now 12, identified Sanford as the killer and recalled hiding under a bed afterward. But a defense witness said police often manipulate children into giving the answer the child thinks the investigator will consider to be the “right” one.

And they contended that the cousin, Jamontez Fulton, who also identified Sanford, saw the shooters only briefly.

Prosecutors said Trotter, who was in her third trimester of pregnancy, was raped and that DNA evidence identified Sanford’s seminal fluids. But Sanford’s attorneys suggested the sex was consensual.

The defense also argued that Ray's killing was retaliation for the shooting death of another man and suggested other suspects were responsible.

But Dan Dunbar, a retired Shawnee County chief deputy district attorney working as a special prosecutor on the case, said police consider those men to be not “alternative suspects” but potential “accomplices” of Sanford’s, and were continuing to investigate their possible involvement. No one else has been charged in the case.

The defense also suggested at trial that 30 police body camera videos that were inadvertently destroyed may have contained evidence that would have helped prove Sanford’s innocence.

Jury: Man not guilty of killing pregnant Kan. woman, her boyfriend

JACKSON COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a suspect on multiple allegations after a traffic stop.

Just after 5 a.m. May, 13, a Sheriff’s Deputy conducted a traffic stop near 142nd and U.S. Highway 75 for a traffic infraction, according to Sheriff Tim Morse.

 During the traffic stop, the deputy observed illegal drug contraband.  The driver, Brandon Dean Vleck, 40, of Greeley, Colorado, was arrested on requested charges of possession of a stolen firearm, criminal possession of a weapon by a felon, criminal use of weapons, possession of anabolic steroids, possession of a hallucinogenic drug and possession of drug paraphernalia.

On Saturday, Kansas U.S. Senator Roger Marshall used his social media account to show support for Butker. "I stand with Harrison Butker, Marshall wrote. "Families, babies, and strong mothers and fathers are a beautiful thing. No amount of liberal gaslighting and manufactured 'outrage' will change our convictions. Christ is King."

During his commencement address at Benedictine College, Butker said, “I think it is you, the women, who have had the most diabolical lies told to you." "Some of you may go on to lead successful careers in the world, but I would venture to guess that the majority of you are most excited about your marriage and the children you will bring into this world. I can tell you that my beautiful wife Isabelle would be the first to say that her life truly started when she started living her vocation as a wife and as a mother,” he said.

Butker said that his wife embraced “one of the most important titles of all. Homemaker.

“Harrison Butker gave a speech in his personal capacity,” NFL senior vice president and chief diversity and inclusion officer Jonathan Beane said in a statement. “His views are not those of the NFL as an organization. The NFL is steadfast in our commitment to inclusion, which only makes our league stronger.”

Visa on Wednesday announced major changes to how credit and debit cards will operate in the U.S. in the coming months and years.

The new features could mean Americans will be carrying fewer physical cards in their wallets, and will make the 16-digit credit or debit card number printed on every card increasingly irrelevant.

They will be some of the biggest changes to how payments operate in the U.S. since the U.S. rolled out chip-embedded cards several years ago. They also come as Americans have many more options to pay for purchases beyond “credit or debit,” including buy now, pay later companies, peer-to-peer payment options, paying directly with a bank, or digital payment systems like Apple Pay.

“I think (with these features) we’re getting past the point where consumers may never need to manually enter an account number ever again,” said Mark Nelsen, Visa’s global head of consumer payments, in an interview.

The biggest change coming for Americans will be the ability for banks to issue one physical payment card that will be connected to multiple bank accounts. That means no more carrying, for example, a Bank of America or Chase debit card as well as their respective credit cards in a physical wallet. Americans will be able to set criteria with their bank — such as having all purchases below $100 or with a certain merchant applied to the debit card, while other purchases go on the credit card.

The feature, already being used in Asia, will be available this summer. Buy now, pay later company Affirm is the first of Visa’s customers to roll out the feature in the U.S.

Some of Visa’s new features are in response to online-payments fraud, which continues to increase as more countries adopt digital payments. The San Francisco-based company estimates that payment fraud happens roughly seven times more often online than it does in person, and there are now billions of stolen credit and debit card numbers available to criminals.

Other new elements are also in response to features that non-payments companies have rolled out in recent years. The Apple Card, which uses Mastercard as its payment network, does not come with a printed 16-digit account number and Apple Card users can request a fresh credit card number at any time without having to dispose of the physical card.

Visa executives see a future where banks will issue cards where the 16-digit account number, if the new cards come with them, is largely symbolic.

Among the other updates unveiled by Visa are changes to tap-to-pay features. Americans will be able to tap their credit or debit cards to their smartphones to add the card to mobile wallets, instead of using a smartphone’s camera to scan in a card’s information, or tap the card to their smartphones to approve a transaction online. Americans will be able to tap their credit or debit cards to their smartphones to add the card to mobile wallets, instead of using a smartphone’s camera to scan in a card’s information, or tap the card to their smartphones to approve a transaction online. The move comes after a recommendation from the federal Health and Human Services Department, which launched&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/marijuana-reclassification-recreational-medical-states-83b1ad0e01bcd65142ca6cf4abdd110b">a review of the drug’s status</a>&nbsp;at the urging of President Joe Biden in 2022.

Biden also has moved to&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/biden-marijuana-pardons-clemency-02abde991a05ff7dfa29bfc3c74e9d64">pardon thousands of people</a>&nbsp;convicted federally of simple possession of marijuana and has called on governors and local leaders to take similar steps to erase convictions.

“This is monumental,” Biden said in a video statement, calling it an important move toward reversing longstanding inequities. “Far too many lives have been upended because of a failed approach to marijuana, and I’m committed to righting those wrongs. You have my word on it.”

The election year announcement could help Biden, a Democrat, boost flagging support, particularly among&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/biden-young-voters-marijuana-reclassification-dea-193e97fc2dd7b32b7d7ad50b4ea80aa0">younger voters</a>.

The notice kicks off a 60-day comment period followed by a possible review from an administrative judge, which could be a drawn-out process.

Biden and a growing number of lawmakers from both major political parties have been pushing for the DEA decision as marijuana has become increasingly decriminalized and accepted, particularly by younger people. Some argue that rescheduling doesn’t go far enough and marijuana should instead be treated the way alcohol is.

Democratic Senate Majority Leader Sen. Chuck Schumer of New York applauded the change and called for additional steps toward legalization.

The U.S. Cannabis Council, a trade group, said the switch would “signal a tectonic shift away from the failed policies of the last 50 years.”

The Justice Department said that available data reviewed by HHS shows that while marijuana "is associated with a high prevalence of abuse,” that potential is more in line with other Schedule III substances, according to the proposed rule.

The HHS recommendations are binding until the draft rule is submitted, and Garland agreed with it for the purposes of starting the process.

Still, the DEA has not yet formed its own determination as to where marijuana should be scheduled, and it expects to learn more during the rulemaking process, the document states.

Some critics argue the DEA shouldn’t change course on marijuana, saying rescheduling isn’t necessary and could lead to harmful side effects.

Dr. Kevin Sabet, a former White House drug policy adviser now with the group Smart Approaches to Marijuana, said there isn’t enough data to support moving pot to Schedule III. “As we’ve maintained throughout this process, it’s become undeniable that politics, not science, is driving this decision and has been since the very beginning,” Sabet said.

The immediate effect of rescheduling on the nation’s criminal justice system is expected to be muted. Federal prosecutions for simple possession have been fairly rare in recent years.

Schedule III drugs are still controlled substances and subject to rules and regulations, and people who traffic in them without permission could still face federal criminal prosecution.

Federal drug policy has lagged behind many states in recent years, with 38 states having already legalized medical marijuana and 24 legalizing its recreational use. That’s helped fuel fast growth in the marijuana industry, with an estimated worth of nearly $30 billion.

Biden hails DOJ moves to reclassify marijuana as less dangerous drug

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – A Springfield, Mo., man who is a registered sex offender was sentenced in federal court this for receiving child pornography, which was discovered on his cell phone during an investigation into threats he made to a sheriff’s department employee, according to the United State's Attrorney.

Joshua Emanuel Wood, 46, was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Stephen R. Bough to 15 years in federal prison without parole. The court also sentenced Wood to 10 years of supervised release following incarceration.

On Dec. 12, 2023, Wood pleaded guilty to one count of receiving and distributing child pornography.

Wood is required to register as a sex offender due to his 2018 conviction of possessing child pornography. The investigation began when Wood left 41 threatening voice mail messages on May 29 and 30, 2022, for the employee of the Greene County, Mo., Sheriff’s Department who was in charge of registering sex offenders. The sex offender registrar reported those threats and law enforcement officers arrested Wood; the state felony charge related to this harassment is still pending.

Wood had a Google Pixel cell phone in his possession when he was arrested. Investigators found child sexual abuse material on the phone, including 107 images of child pornography, including depictions of infants being raped, as well as web searches for child pornography and visits to suspected child pornography websites. According to court documents, the forensic analysis of Wood’s cell phone demonstrated that he had been wiping his cell phone frequently, and the child pornography files had been received over a period of just a few days. Because he was regularly wiping his cell phone, it is difficult to know the extent of his involvement with child pornography.

This case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Stephanie L. Wan. It was investigated by the Greene County, Mo., Sheriff’s Department, Homeland Security Investigations, the Southwest Missouri Cyber Crimes Task Force, and the Springfield, Mo., Police Department.

TOPEKA — All six of Kansas’ state universities have proposed tuition increases for the 2024-2025 school year, citing inflation, declining enrollment and staff retention costs.

Emporia State University, diverging from the other institutions, proposed cutting student fees to fully offset the increase in tuition.

University officials on Wednesday had a preliminary discussion about the proposed increases with the Kansas Board of Regents. KBOR sets tuition and fee rates for the state’s public university, and usually formally implements these changes through a vote in the later summer months.

Jeff DeWitt, chief financial officer for the University of Kansas, said KU is proposing a 3.5% tuition increase for both undergraduate and graduate students. DeWitt chalked the change up to inflation pressures, market pay to retain faculty and staff, facility maintenance, and cybersecurity and technology costs. The change would add $28.6 million in tuition revenue for the Lawrence and Edwards campuses.

DeWitt said the university failed to attract top-shelf researchers on multiple occasions because it couldn’t afford to match other offers. He said many staff and faculty members at KU are also paid less than their peers at other institutions.

“If you want to be great, you gotta have a great workforce to do that, and you gotta bring in those top researchers and those top faculty to develop the workforce of the future,” DeWitt said.

At Kansas State University, officials proposed a 2.8% tuition increase for undergraduates and graduate students, an adjustment projected to generate approximately $5,583,399 in additional funds. According to the&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.kansasregents.org/resources/PDF/About/Board_Meetings/FY_2024/Final_Tuition_with_Supplemental_Information.pdf">K-State’s document</a>,&nbsp;the university has struggled with the pandemic, years-long enrollment decline and cybersecurity threats.

Wichita State University is proposing a 3.9% tuition increase for all students, estimated to generate $3.6 million in tuition revenue to offset operating costs such as student scholarships and utilities. The university froze tuition hikes through 2022 and 2023, but increased rates by 5.9% in 2024.&nbsp;

Pittsburg State University is asking for a 3.5% increase in 1.2% increase in fees. The proposed tuition change would be an increase of $107 per semester for undergraduates and $125 per semester for graduate students. A proposed $60 fee per semester would support the College of Technology.

“During a time of significant inflation impacts to students and the university, this proposal will continue to represent significant value to students and families by keeping tuition rate changes greatly below general inflation, while allowing important investments in key strategic goals and student success and experience initiatives,” the university said in its written request.

Fort Hays State University is proposing a 6% tuition increase, citing uncertain future enrollment. Even with the increase, FHSU plans to reduce its budget by an estimated $825,000 next year, according to the university’s proposal outline. The tuition increase would generate about $960,000.

“As we progress through the uncertainty of the future and the challenges facing higher education, including record inflation, declining high school senior graduates, increased competition, and wage pressures, the university has instituted several measures to keep costs down,” FHSU said in its proposal. “… While we continue to see savings from our actions, we also plan for additional financial challenges.”

Emporia State University is seeking a 4% tuition increase for undergraduates and a 2%&nbsp;increase for graduate students. However, the university is also cutting campus fees by 17%, allowing for a net decrease in costs of $14.28 per semester for a full-time resident undergraduate student and $109.21 for a full-time resident graduate student.

“Our combined goal is always affordability for all students,” said Angela Wolgram, ESU assistant vice president and deputy chief financial officer. “Our students will actually be paying less next year to attend ESU than they did this fall.”

The request follows continued public outcry over the school’s mass firing of professors in 2022 and rapidly declining enrollment.

ESU fired 30 professors and eliminated programs and majors in 2022 before investing in new programs. The Legislature allocated&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://kansasreflector.com/2023/09/12/emporia-state-university-forges-new-identity-with-9m-earmark-from-kansas-legislature/">a $9 million earmark</a>&nbsp;in the state budgets last year and this year to support the endeavor, known as the “ESU model.” The governor used a line-item veto on the earmark earlier this year, but allowed it to remain in legislation passed shortly before lawmakers adjourned.

In the university’s written proposal, ESU officials said they expected enrollment numbers to stabilize in 2025, following&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://kansasreflector.com/2023/09/27/kansas-public-university-college-enrollment-grows-despite-12-5-plunge-at-emporia-state/">a 12.5% plunge</a>&nbsp;last fall. The university said it will focus on “programs most aligned with workforce needs and enhancing marketing to build the university’s brand and attract more students from the shrinking college-going population.”

JOHNSON COUNTY —Two members of the Kansas City Chiefs were arrested Friday in Johnson County.

According to the sheriff's booking report&nbsp; 23-year-old Chukwuebuka <a href="https://www.chiefs.com/team/players-roster/chukwuebuka-jason-godrick/">Godrick </a>and 23-year-old&nbsp;<a href="https://www.chiefs.com/team/players-roster/wanya-morris/">Wanya Morris </a>were booked into jail for misdemeanor marijuana possession.

Both were released on Friday afternoon after posting $2,500 bond.&nbsp;

Morris, an offensive lineman from the University of Oklahoma, was a third-round draft pick (92nd overall) by the Chiefs in the 2023 NFL Draft, according to his bio on the team web site.

Godrick, an offensive lineman, is also entering his second season with the Chiefs. He originally entered the NFL as a designated International Pathway Player with the Chiefs in 2023, according to his bio on the team web site.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Both are due back in court May 23, according to online records.

JERUSALEM (AP) — The Israeli military said Friday its troops&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/israel-hamas-war">in Gaza</a>&nbsp;found the bodies of three Israeli hostages killed by Hamas during its Oct. 7 attack, including German-Israeli Shani Louk.

A photo of 22-year-old Louk's twisted body in the back of a pickup truck ricocheted around the world and brought to light the scale of the militants’ attack on communities in southern Israel. The military identified the other two bodies as those of a 28-year-old woman, Amit Buskila, and a 56-year-old man, Itzhak Gelerenter.

All three were killed by Hamas while fleeing the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/video/israel-hamas-war-hamas-fairs-and-festivals-israel-gaza-strip-6d2c6a499a8b42899e89565666030809">Nova music festival</a>, an outdoor dance party near the Gaza border, where militants killed hundreds of people, military spokesman Rear Adm. Daniel Hagari said at a news conference.

Israeli Prime Minister&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/benjamin-netanyahu">Benjamin Netanyahu</a>&nbsp;called the deaths “heartbreaking,” saying, “We will return all of our hostages, both the living and the dead.”

The military said the bodies were found overnight, without elaborating, and did not give immediate details on where they were located. Israel has been operating in the Gaza Strip's southern city of Rafah, where it says it has intelligence that hostages are being held.

Hamas-led militants killed around 1,200 people, mainly civilians, and abducted around 250 others in the Oct. 7 attack. Around half of those hostages have since been freed, most in swaps for Palestinian prisoners held by Israel during a weeklong cease-fire in November.

Israeli army finds bodies of 3 hostages in Gaza

ST. LOUIS (AP) — A Missouri inmate who is due to be executed next month has been hospitalized because of a “medical emergency,” a spokeswoman for the Missouri Department of Corrections said.

<a href="https://apnews.com/article/execution-date-set-missouri-inmate-hosier-58f9b156cf4fd640e04b90c7253f3a1c">David Hosier</a>, 69, is scheduled to be&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/execution-date-set-missouri-inmate-hosier-58f9b156cf4fd640e04b90c7253f3a1c">put to death June 11</a>&nbsp;for killing a Jefferson City couple, Angela and Rodney Gilpin, in 2009. His attorney, Jeremy Weis, said a prison doctor diagnosed Hosier with heart failure this week. Hosier's sister, Barbara Morrill, said he has atrial fibrillation, which causes an irregular heartbeat.

Morrill said her brother fell ill about a week and ago and has gotten worse, with leg swelling and severe pain. She wondered why it took so long to move him out of his cell.

“He’s in a lot of pain,” she said. “He can’t walk. He can barely talk.”

Karen Pojmann, spokeswoman for the Missouri Department of Corrections, said she could not release further information, citing privacy requirements.

It wasn’t immediately clear if the medical problem could postpone the execution. Hosier has always maintained his innocence, but police and prosecutors say the evidence against him was overwhelming.

Hosier is the son of a murder victim — a police officer killed in the line of duty. Indiana State Police Sergeant Glen Hosier was fatally shot by a murder suspect in 1971, when David Hosier was 16. Other officers killed the gunman.

On the night of his father's shooting, David Hosier was awakened to find a trooper at his bedside. “I heard mom downstairs crying and when that happens, you know what it usually means,” he recalled in an interview with The Associated Press last week, before he became ill.

Hosier was sent to military school and later joined the Navy, where he spent four years in active duty. He was visiting his sister in Missouri in the late 1970s, met a woman who would become his first wife, and they settled in Jefferson City. He worked for several years as an EMT and firefighter.

Hosier acknowledged that in 2009, he had an affair with Angela Gilpin. She ended it and reconciled with her husband. Not long after that, in September 2009, they were shot to death near the doorway of their apartment.

"How can you find a person guilty beyond a reasonable doubt and sentence that person to die when you have no witnesses to a crime, you have no fingerprints to tie this person to a crime, you have no DNA that ties this person to a crime?” Hosier asked.

Court records and investigators point to significant circumstantial evidence.

“He (Hosier) was involved romantically with the victim,” said Randy Dampf, who was a Jefferson City police officer at the time of the killings and now works as an investigator for the county prosecutor. “She had wanted to break off the relationship and he was angry about that."

Detective Jason Miles said Hosier made numerous comments to other people threatening to harm Angela Gilpin in the days before the killings. Police found an application for a protective order in Angela Gilpin’s purse, and another document in which she expressed fear that Hosier might shoot her and her husband.

“I am totally convinced of his involvement in this case and I think all of the evidence supports that,” Miles said.

Hosier was an immediate suspect, but police couldn't find him. They used cellphone data to track Hosier to Oklahoma. A chase ensued when an Oklahoma officer tried to stop Hosier's car. When he got out, he told the officers, “Shoot me, and get it over with,” court records show.

Officers found 15 guns, a bulletproof vest, 400 rounds of ammunition and other weapons in Hosier’s car. Among the weapons was a submachine gun, made from a kit, that investigators determined was used in the killings.

A note was found in the front seat of Hosier’s vehicle. “If you are going with someone do not lie to them,” it read in part. “Be honest with them if there is something wrong. If you do not this could happen to YOU!!”

Hosier said he wasn't fleeing to Oklahoma, but was simply on a long drive to clear his mind. He had lots of guns because he likes to hunt, he said. He didn't recall a note in the car.

The Missouri Supreme Court&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/9e3ed855389a4c1b8f92a495bf499b55">upheld the conviction</a>&nbsp;in 2019.

Hosier's spiritual adviser, the Rev. Jeff Hood, said the law enforcement community is known for standing with families of fallen officers. They should do the same now for Hosier, he said.

“The difficulties of David’s life are a product of having to experience the death of his father in the line of duty,” Hood said. “How can they say, ‘Leave no family member of the fallen behind,’ and cheer on the execution of David Hosier?”

Medical problem could delay execution for man who killed ex-lover

KANSAS CITY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating another. homicide in Kansas City.

Just after 6:30p.m. Thursday, police were dispatched to report of a shooting at&nbsp;57th and Bellefontaine, according to Sheriff Daryl Forte.'

First responders located a man in the park suffering from gunshot trauma. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Police have not released any suspect information or additional details.

Homicide: Man found with gunshot wound in Kansas City park

NEW YORK (AP) — Dabney Coleman, the mustachioed character actor who specialized in smarmy villains like the chauvinist boss in “9 to 5” and the nasty TV director in “Tootsie,” has died. He was 92.

Coleman died Thursday at his home in Santa Monica, his daughter, Quincy Coleman, said in a statement to The Associated Press. She said he “took his last earthly breath peacefully and exquisitely.”

“The great Dabney Coleman literally created, or defined, really — in a uniquely singular way — an archetype as a character actor. He was so good at what he did it’s hard to imagine movies and television of the last 40 years without him,” Ben Stiller wrote on X.

For two decades Coleman labored in movies and TV shows as a talented but largely unnoticed performer. That changed abruptly in 1976 when he was cast as the incorrigibly corrupt mayor of the hamlet of Fernwood in “Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman,” a satirical soap opera that was so over the top no network would touch it.

Producer Norman Lear finally managed to syndicate the show, which starred Louise Lasser in the title role. It quickly became a cult favorite. Coleman’s character, Mayor Merle Jeeter, was especially popular and his masterful, comic deadpan delivery did not go overlooked by film and network executives.

A six-footer with an ample black mustache, Coleman went on to make his mark in numerous popular films, including as a stressed out computer scientist in “War Games,” Tom Hanks’ father in “You’ve Got Mail” and a fire fighting official in “The Towering Inferno.”

He won a Golden Globe for “The Slap Maxwell Story” and an Emmy Award for best supporting actor in Peter Levin’s 1987 small screen legal drama “Sworn to Silence.” Some of his recent credits include “Ray Donovan” and a recurring role on “Boardwalk Empire,” for which he won two Screen Actors Guild Awards.

In the groundbreaking 1980 hit “9 to 5,” he was the “sexist, egotistical, lying, hypocritical bigot” boss who tormented his unappreciated female underlings — Jane Fonda, Lily Tomlin and Dolly Parton — until they turned the tables on him.

In 1981, he was Fonda’s caring, well-mannered boyfriend, who asks her father (played by her real-life father, Henry Fonda) if he can sleep with her during a visit to her parents’ vacation home in “On Golden Pond.”

Opposite Dustin Hoffman in “Tootsie,” he was the obnoxious director of a daytime soap opera that Hoffman’s character joins by pretending to be a woman. Among Coleman’s other films were “North Dallas Forty,” “Cloak and Dagger,” “Dragnet,” “Meet the Applegates,” “Inspector Gadget” and “Stuart Little.” He reunited with Hoffman as a land developer in Brad Silberling’s “Moonlight Mile” with Jake Gyllenhaal.

Coleman’s obnoxious characters didn’t translate quite as well on television, where he starred in a handful of network comedies. Although some became cult favorites, only one lasted longer than two seasons, and some critics questioned whether a series starring a lead character with absolutely no redeeming qualities could attract a mass audience.

“Buffalo Bill” (1983-84) was a good example. It starred Coleman as “Buffalo Bill” Bittinger, the smarmy, arrogant, dimwitted daytime talk show host who, unhappy at being relegated to the small-time market of Buffalo, New York, takes it out on everyone around him. Although smartly written and featuring a fine ensemble cast, it lasted only two seasons.

Another was 1987’s “The Slap Maxwell Story,” in which Coleman was a failed small-town sportswriter trying to save a faltering marriage while wooing a beautiful young reporter on the side.

Other failed attempts to find a mass TV audience included “Apple Pie,” “Drexell’s Class” (in which he played an inside trader) and “Madman of the People,” another newspaper show in which he clashed this time with his younger boss, who was also his daughter.

He fared better in a co-starring role in “The Guardian” (2001-2004), which had him playing the father of a crooked lawyer. And he enjoyed the voice role as Principal Prickly on the Disney animated series “Recess” from 1997-2003.

Underneath all that bravura was a reserved man. Coleman insisted he was really quite shy. “I’ve been shy all my life. Maybe it stems from being the last of four children, all of them very handsome, including a brother who was Tyrone Power-handsome. Maybe it’s because my father died when I was 4,” he told The Associated Press in 1984. “I was extremely small, just a little guy who was there, the kid who created no trouble. I was attracted to fantasy, and I created games for myself.”

As he aged, he also began to put his mark on pompous authority figures, notably in 1998’s “My Date With the President’s Daughter,” in which he was not only an egotistical, self-absorbed president of the United States, but also a clueless father to a teenager girl.

Dabney Coleman — his real name — was born in 1932 in Austin, Texas After two years at the Virginia Military Academy, two at the University of Texas and two in the Army, he was a 26-year-old law student when he met another Austin native, Zachry Scott, who starred in “Mildred Pierce” and other films.

“He was the most dynamic person I’ve ever met. He convinced me I should become an actor, and I literally left the next day to study in New York. He didn’t think that was too wise, but I made my decision,” Coleman told The AP in 1984.

Early credits included such TV shows as “Ben Casey,” “Dr Kildare,” “The Outer Limits,” “Bonanza,” “The Mod Squad” and the film “The Towering Inferno.” He appeared on Broadway in 1961 in “A Call on Kuprin.” He played Kevin Costner’s father on “Yellowstone.”

Twice divorced, Coleman is survived by four children, Meghan, Kelly, Randy and Quincy, and the grandchildren Hale and Gabe Torrance, Luie Freundl and Kai and Coleman Biancaniello.

“My father crafted his time here on earth with a curious mind, a generous heart, and a soul on fire with passion, desire and humor that tickled the funny bone of humanity,” Quincy Coleman wrote in his honor.

SEDGWICK COUNTY —The Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office is assisting the Kansas Bureau of Investigation and the Sumner County Sheriff’s Office in the investigation after two bodies were located near the 300 Block of River Road in rural Sumner County, according to Sedgwick County Sheriff's Lt. Nathan Gibbs.

 One of the bodies was located on May 10,&nbsp; the other on May 13.&nbsp; Both bodies were transported to the Sedgwick County Regional Forensic Science Center for further testing and examination. &nbsp;

On Friday, the sheriff's office received confirmation through DNA testing on the identities of the two deceased individuals as 30-year-old Monica R. Williams and 24-year-old Kevin M. Ledesma. Both had been reported missing in early January.

The Sheriff’s Office has identified several suspects in the case. There is no immediate threat to the citizens regarding th The circumstances in which these individuals were killed remains under investigation by the Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office.

Investigators ID two bodies found in rural Kansas

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — The man convicted of attempting to kidnap then-House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and attacking her husband with a hammer was sentenced Friday to 30 years in prison.

Judge Jacqueline Scott Corley handed down the sentence for David DePape, 44, whom jurors found guilty last November of attempted kidnapping of a federal official and assault on the immediate family member of a federal official. Prosecutors had asked for a 40-year prison term.

DePape was given 20 years for one count and 30 years for another count. The sentences will run concurrently. He was also given credit for the 18 months that he's been in custody.

DePape stood silently as Judge Corley handed the sentence and looked down at times. His public defense attorneys had asked the judge to sentence him to 14 years, pointing out that he was going through a difficult time in his life and had no prior criminal history.
