SHAWNEE COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a suspect on multiple allegations after a chase and crash in Shawnee County.

Just after 10 p.m., June 22, police responded to a reported disturbance near SW 6th Street and Fairlawn Road in Topeka, according to police spokesperson Rosie Nichols.

A driver later identified as Carnell R.Bushnell, 20, of Topeka, was allegedly attempting to use his vehicle to strike another vehicle driven by someone he knew. The targeted vehicle also had children present.

Officers located Bushnell near SW 1st Street and I-70 and attempted to stop his vehicle. Bushnell refused to comply and initiated a pursuit. During the chase, Bushnell committed multiple traffic violations before being involved in an injury crash in the 200 block of SE Golden Avenue. He then ran from the crash and was later located near the Shunga Creek.

 Bushnell was transported to a local hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries. No other injuries were reported from the crash.

Following the investigation, Bushnell was arrested and booked into jail on requested charges of Aggravated battery; Knowingly use physical contact in angry/rude manner w/weapon; Aggravated Endangering A Child; Reckless Situation; Criminal damage to property; Without consent value $1000 to $25,000; Interference with LEO; obstruct/resist/oppose felony warrant service or execution; Flee or attempt to elude; motor vehicle accident or damage property; Driving while suspended; 1st conviction; Reckless driving; 1st conviction; Fail To Stop At Stop Sign; Driving Without Lights When Needed; Failure To Give Signal When Changing Lanes or Turning; Driving On Left Side Of Roadway; Fail To Stop At Accident;injury/damage Over $1000 and Vehicle Registration Renewal.

Police: Kansas man attempted to use his vehicle as a weapon

During the interaction, the deputy discovered the driver identified as 32-year-old Jose A. Flores of Topeka had a warrant for his arrest. The deputy also noticed illegal narcotics.

The deputy arrested Flores on requested charges of possession of cocaine, drug paraphernalia and for the warrant.

WASHINGTON — The U.S. Department of Agriculture announced Tuesday that four states will launch voluntary pilot programs in the days ahead to test bulk milk tanks on dairy farms for bird flu — a move that’s aimed at making it easier for farmers to ship herds across state lines and for public health officials to track spread of the virus.

Kansas, Nebraska, New Mexico and Texas will be in the first round of voluntary participation, with other states likely to follow, officials said on a call with reporters.

“This list of participating states is just the beginning,” said Eric Deeble, the acting senior advisor for H5N1 response at USDA.

“We are in close conversation with about a dozen other states who are very interested in participating as well,” Deeble said. “But it was important for us to get these four states going so that other states could watch how the program works and gain additional confidence.”

The launch of the pilot program, he said, is “an important step forward” for efforts to reduce the spread of bird flu, also known as H5N1, as well as for expanding understanding of the virus.

Farmers who voluntarily enter the program will be able to move their herds across state lines without additional testing after bulk milk tanks or similar representative samples test negative for H5N1 for three consecutive weeks.

“Producers must also comply with continued regular weekly monitoring and testing of their herd for H5N1, but that process can happen with very little effort on the part of the producer, using routine bulk milk samples,” Deeble said.

The announcement is part of the federal government’s<a href="https://www.newsfromthestates.com/article/bird-flus-spread-poultry-cattle-humans-provokes-worry-among-feds-states" target="_blank">&nbsp;ongoing response</a>&nbsp;to the months-long outbreak within dairy cattle and years-long challenges faced by the country’s poultry industry.

The USDA has&nbsp;<a href="https://www.aphis.usda.gov/livestock-poultry-disease/avian/avian-influenza/hpai-detections/hpai-confirmed-cases-livestock" target="_blank">confirmed</a>&nbsp;126 cases of bird flu in dairy cattle herds in a dozen states as of June 21, including Colorado, Idaho, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, New Mexico, North Carolina, Ohio, South Dakota, Texas and Wyoming.

Idaho has the most dairy herds affected, with a total of 27. That’s followed by Michigan with 25 herds and Texas with 21 herds. Colorado has reported 18 affected herds, while each of the other states has fewer than 10 herds testing positive for bird flu, according to the USDA data.

Three dairy farmworkers have contracted avian flu this year, though all cases were mild.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reinforced during the call Tuesday that the risk to the general public remains low, though there is an increased risk of contracting the virus for workers, both on dairy farms and poultry farms.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration also announced Tuesday it’s broadening its testing for H5N1 to include about 155 additional samples of dairy products, including aged raw milk cheese, cream cheese, butter and ice cream.

The FDA has repeatedly tested pasteurized milk from store shelves in the months since the first dairy cattle herd tested positive for H5N1 and has continuously emphasized the nation’s milk supply remains safe.

“This retail sampling effort is intended to address remaining geographic and product gaps from the initial sampling of the commercial milk supply that FDA conducted between April and May of this year,” said Don Prater, acting director of the Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition at the FDA.

It will likely take several weeks before those results are completed and made public, he said.

That second round of expanded food safety testing will not include raw milk, since it is not approved for interstate commerce, he said.

But the FDA has sent a&nbsp;<a href="https://www.fda.gov/media/179194/download" target="_blank">letter</a>&nbsp;to its local, state and tribal partners, cautioning those that do allow the sale of raw milk to talk with consumers about the additional risks, given that H5N1 is spreading through dairy herds in several parts of the country.

Prater, speaking on the call Tuesday, noted the FDA continues to strongly advise against drinking raw milk.

“We also recommend that the industry does not manufacture or sell raw milk or raw milk products, including raw milk cheese made with milk from cows showing symptoms of illness, including those infected with the avian influenza viruses or exposed to those infected with avian influenza viruses.”

Kansas to begin voluntary testing for bird flu in dairy farm milk tanks

SHAWNEE COUNTY– Law enforcement investigating another deadly shooting in Topeka have identified the victim as Steven R. Warden, 43, of Topeka,&nbsp; according to Police Lt. Edward Stanley.

Just after 9:30p.m. Monday, police&nbsp;responded to the area of 13th and Western Avenue in Topeka.

First responders located Warden suffering from a gunshot wound. He was pronounced deceased at the scene. Police released no suspect information or reported an arrest.

This is the eighth homicide of 2024 in Topeka.

Will Scharf’s hopes of winning the GOP nomination for Missouri attorney general got a massive financial boost on Tuesday, when a group connected to influential conservative activist Leonard Leo donated $2 million to the effort.&nbsp;

Tuesday’s check came from the Concord Fund, an organization bankrolled by groups connected to Leo — a&nbsp;<a href="https://www.propublica.org/article/we-dont-talk-about-leonard-leo-supreme-court-supermajority" target="_blank">prolific fundraiser</a>&nbsp;credited as one of the main architects of conservatives’ efforts to reshape the American judicial system.

The money went to Club for Growth Action Missouri, a PAC supporting Scharf in his campaign to unseat incumbent Attorney General Andrew Bailey in the Aug. 6 GOP primary.&nbsp;

Since the beginning of 2023, the Concord Fund has donated $3.5 million to help Scharf. In April, Club for Growth also received $1.4 million from Paul Singer, one of the nation’s richest hedge fund managers.

Club for Growth Action Missouri reported having $2 million cash on hand as of April 1. Since then, the PAC has received more than $4 million in large donations, including the checks from Singer and the Concord Fund.&nbsp;

Scharf’s campaign committee reported having $824,000 cash on hand as of April 1.&nbsp;

Bailey, who was appointed attorney general by Gov. Mike Parson in 2022, reported his campaign committee had&nbsp; $565,000 cash on hand as of April 1. The PAC supporting his candidacy — called Liberty and Justice PAC — reported $1.9 million cash on hand as of April 1.&nbsp;

Since then, Liberty and Justice PAC has reported receiving $1.5 million in large donations.&nbsp;

Leo is a lawyer and activist who is a longtime leader at the Federalist Society, the influential conservative legal advocacy group involved in almost every high-profile conservative judicial appointment of recent decades.

He has quietly built a sprawling political network fueled by millions in anonymous dollars. He was the beneficiary of the largest known political donation in U.S. history, when industrialist Barre Seid seeded a nonprofit run by Leo with&nbsp;<a href="https://www.propublica.org/article/dark-money-leonard-leo-barre-seid" target="_blank">$1.6 billion in 2022</a>.&nbsp;

According to The New York Times, Leo has helped marshal&nbsp;<a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2022/10/12/us/politics/leonard-leo-courts-dark-money.html" target="_blank">half a billion dollars in resources over the last decade</a>&nbsp;to bankroll legal, policy and political fights around the country over issues ranging from critical race theory to transgender rights to election law.

Scharf has been active in The Federalist Society for years, and worked on the confirmations of Supreme Court Justices Brett Kavanaugh and Amy Coney Barrett.&nbsp;

He has publicly called Leo “<a href="https://www.stltoday.com/news/local/govt-and-politics/potential-contender-for-missouri-ag-wins-support-from-high-profile-republicans/article_78338dcb-ac1c-51ff-92e9-f44b27cb1d7a.html" target="_blank">a dear friend and mentor</a>.”&nbsp;

The seven-figure donation to Club for Growth came soon after the group began shuffling money to another PAC that is currently running attack ads across the state against Bailey.&nbsp;

Defend Missouri was&nbsp;<a href="https://missouriindependent.com/briefs/pac-supporting-missouri-attorney-general-candidate-shifts-its-money-to-club-for-growth/">initially organized as the main PAC raising money</a>&nbsp;to support Scharf’s campaign.&nbsp;

Under Missouri campaign finance laws, candidates face contribution limits while independent PACs do not. The trade off for the ability to raise unlimited cash is that while PACs can coordinate with candidates to raise money, it is illegal to coordinate on spending or strategy.&nbsp;

Last summer, Defend Missouri donated nearly all of its money — around $533,000 — to Club for Growth. And for the next year, it remained dormant.&nbsp;

Then last week, Club for Growth donated $465,000 back to Defend Missouri. It sent Defend Missouri another $540,000 on Monday.&nbsp;

As the money was rolling in, Defend Missouri began running ads accusing Bailey of capitulating to Planned Parenthood, an accusation the Republican attorney general firmly denies.&nbsp;

Michael Hafner, Bailey’s campaign spokesman, said in an email to The Independent that Scharf’s campaign is “throwing Hail Marys and wasting millions of dollars of Wall Street money to purchase the attorney general’s office.”

Neither Kristen Sanocki, president of Defend Missouri, nor Justin Smith, treasurer of Club for Growth Missouri, responded to requests for comment on why the money is being transferred back and forth.&nbsp;

Defend Missouri and Club for Growth share much of the same infrastructure. Until it donated all of its money to Club for Growth last year, for example, Defend Missouri was paying consulting fees to Smith’s company.&nbsp;

And both have used a similar slate of vendors, most of which are tied to the Missouri consulting firm Axiom Strategies, which is owned by&nbsp;<a href="https://www.politico.com/news/2024/01/18/trump-jeff-roe-republican-strategist-00136240" target="_blank">longtime strategist Jeff Roe</a>.&nbsp;

Scharf’s candidate committee is also paying Axiom Strategies to serve as its general consultant.

Woman dead after violent head-on crash in Kansas City

KANSAS CITY – Seven area residents, including the leader and several members of the Galloping Goose Motorcycle Club, have been indicted by a federal grand jury for their roles in an ongoing criminal enterprise that involved acts of violence, drug trafficking, and illegally possessing firearms, according to the United State's Attorney.

Tonka Way Con Ponder, 53, and his wife, Carolynn L. Ponder, 47, both of Preston, Mo., and Tretch Lucius Lawrence, also known as “Travis Dewain Shankle,” 48, Keith Dewayne Nolen Jr., also known as “Seg,” 34, Paul Leon Gardner, 52, Daniel Scot Kurtzenborn, 41, and Robert Russell Warren, also known as “Russ,” 54, all of whom have unknown addresses, were charged in a 25-count indictment returned under seal by a federal grand jury on June 18.

That indictment was unsealed and made public&nbsp; following the arrests of six of the defendants (with the exception of Warren). Tonka Ponder, Lawrence, Nolen and Kurtzeborn remain detained in federal custody pending a detention hearing on Tuesday, June 25. Gardner and Carolynn Ponder were released on bond.

The federal indictment alleges that Tonka Ponder, Lawrence, Nolen, Gardner and Kurtzeborn are members of the Lake of the Ozarks chapter of the Galloping Goose outlaw motorcycle gang, an organized criminal enterprise. Members of the Galloping Goose, says the indictment, engaged in acts of violence, including assault, attempted robbery, and extortion.

According to the indictment, Tonka Ponder was the leader of the local chapter of the Galloping Goose, which has a clubhouse in Camdenton, Missouri.

The federal indictment charges Tonka Ponder, Lawrence, Shankle, Nolen, Kurtzeborn and Gardner with committing a violent crime in aid of racketeering. They allegedly assaulted another person with a deadly weapon on Dec. 12, 2020.

The federal indictment charges Tonka Ponder, Carolynn Ponder, and Warren with participating in a conspiracy to distribute methamphetamine in Camden and Miller Counties from Aug. 1 to Oct. 31, 2022. Tonka Ponder is also charged with five counts of distributing methamphetamine, one count of possessing a firearm in furtherance of a drug-trafficking crime, and four counts of traveling across state lines to facilitate the illegal distribution of methamphetamine.

Tonka Ponder is charged with two counts of using his cell phone to facilitate a drug-trafficking conspiracy. Carolynn Ponder is charged with one count of using her cell phone to facilitate a drug-trafficking conspiracy.

Kurtzeborn and Nolen are each charged with one count of being a felon in possession of a firearm. Kurtzeborn allegedly possessed a Taurus .357-caliber revolver on July 15, 2021. Nolen allegedly possessed a Taurus 9mm handgun on Aug. 24, 2023.

Leader, members of motorcycle gang accused of violent criminal activity

SHAWNEE COUNTY — A woman accused in the death of child in Shawnee County has also died.

&nbsp;Shyla M. Goracke, 29, Topeka, died Monday, according to Shawnee County Sheriff's Deputy Abigail Christian.

Shortly after 11:30 a.m. June 20, the Shawnee County Emergency Communications Center received a 911 call regarding an incident on SW Worwick Town Road. First responders found a child later identified as 9-year-old&nbsp; Zerick I. Ozuna, located inside the residence, suffering from multiple wounds to the chest and neck. The boy was pronounced deceased at the scene.

&nbsp;Deputies took Goracke, the mother of the boy into custody, and she was transported to a hospital.&nbsp; &nbsp;The sheriff's office released no additional details on the cause of her death or the result of an autopsy on the 9-year-old.&nbsp; &nbsp; Check the Post for more information as it is released.

Snapchill LLC (Snapchill) of Wisconsin is voluntarily recalling all canned coffee products manufactured by the company, within expiration date, because their current process could lead to the growth and production of the deadly toxin, botulinum toxin, in low acid canned foods, according to a statement from the Food and Drug Administration.

Botulism, a potentially fatal form of food poisoning, can cause the following symptoms: general weakness, dizziness, double-vision and trouble with speaking or swallowing. Difficulty in breathing, weakness of other muscles, abdominal distension and constipation may also be common symptoms. Symptoms can begin from six hours to two weeks after eating food that contains botulinum toxin. People experiencing these problems should seek immediate medical attention.

The products were distributed nationwide through various coffee roasters and retail locations, as well as through direct online purchase from Snapchill. The problem was identified when the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) notified Snapchill that the low acid canned foods process for manufacturing the recalled products was not filed with FDA, as is required by regulation. No illnesses have been reported to-date, and Snapchill is not aware of any instances in which the company’s products contained botulin toxin. Snapchill is working on filing the appropriate notification with FDA.

The products are sold under a range of roaster and brand names, in variety of metal can sizes ranging from 7 oz to 12 oz. The products are identifiable by the language “Produced and distributed by Snapchill LLC” underneath the nutrition facts panel. Some of the products can also be identified by the text “Snapchill Coffee” on the label. The specific products subject to this voluntary recall are listed at the end of this notice.

This voluntary recall is being made with the knowledge of FDA.

Consumers should either destroy the products or return the product to Snapchill or the place of purchase for a refund. Risk of fatal food poisoning: Hundreds of coffee products recalled 

DOUGLAS COUNTY —After asking the public for help with information, sheriff's deputies received tips and were able to identify the driver and locate the vehicle from this incident.

Authorities released no additional details.

DOUGLAS COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a hit-and-run accident and looking for a vehicle involved in an accident that occurred just after 6p.m. Sunday near Bloomington Beach, according to a social media report from the Douglas County Sheriff.

The driver of a vehicle – believed to be a Mitsubishi Eclipse – struck the a pickup truck causing significant damage and then left the scene. No one in the pickup truck needed to be transported from the scene.

The white vehicle sustained significant damage to the rear driver’s side and rear bumper.

Tip helps Kan. deputies locate hit-and-run crash suspect 

SALINE COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a suspect on multiple allegations after an altercation at a convenience store.

Just before 5a.m. Tuesday, employees from the KWIK Stop gas station at 1727 West Crawford Street in Salina reported to police that a man walked into the store naked and began battering employees with a stick in each hand, according to Salina Police Captain James Feldman 

The man assaulted three employees, the first at the back door of the convenience store and the second and third inside store.

When officers arrived at the store, employees had already subdued the subject, who SPD officers identified as 42-year-old Joshua Renfro of Salina.

The first employee Renfro allegedly assaulted was a 60-year-old employee Renfro pushed past to enter the store from the backdoor.

"There was a 55-year-old employee who heard a commotion in the business, and as he was at the back at the coolers, he observed the naked male who had two sticks in his hands," Feldman said. 

"This employee told Renfro he needed to leave the business. Renfro then allegedly struck the victim several times in the head with one of the sticks and that employee suffered several cuts to his forehead and left eye.

Another employee, a 51-year-old woman, moved to assist her two coworkers when Renfro pushed her to the ground and caused an injury to her left elbow and an injury on her thigh, according to Feldman.

Emergency responders transported the 51-year-old woman to Salina Regional Health Center to treat the potentially broken elbow.

"Officers ended up wrapping the subject and transporting him to the hospital because they believe there's an influence of drugs," Feldman said. "I don't know if he's out [of the hospital], but he is facing charges&nbsp; of aggravated battery and a count of simple battery.

Renfro did not attempt to steal any items at Kwik Shop — he only attacked employees in the convenience store.

After Renfro is released from the hospital,&nbsp; police will consider further charges for the incident.

Just after 9:30p.m. Monday, police&nbsp;responded to the area of 13th and Western Avenue in Topeka, according to Police Lt. Edward Stanley.

First responders located one individual suffering from a gunshot wound. This individual was pronounced deceased at the scene. Police released no suspect information or reported an arrest.

Federal judges in Kansas and Missouri on Monday blocked the full implementation of a student-loan forgiveness program proposed by the Biden administration that was set to launch July 1.

The SAVE Plan, an acronym for Saving on a Valuable Education, has been partially rolled out. The provisions already in effect may remain, United States District Court for the District of Kansas Judge Daniel Crabtree ruled Monday. But elements set for July 1, like reducing payments to 5% of borrowers’ income instead of 10%, are on hold while litigation challenging the program moves forward.

A separate ruling out of the Eastern District of Missouri will block only loan forgiveness. The SAVE Plan offered forgiveness for those who borrowed less than $12,000 and have been paying for more than 10 years, with an additional year for each $1,000 additional borrowed.

Both judges wrote that the SAVE Plan, which uses the Higher Education Act to authorize approximately $475 billion in loan forgiveness, is beyond the law’s legislative intent.

“The court is not free to replace the language of the statute with unenacted legislative intent.&nbsp;Congress has made it clear under what circumstances loan forgiveness is permitted, and the (income-contingent repayment) plan is not one of those circumstances,” United States District Court Judge for the Eastern District of Missouri John Ross wrote.

The rulings are the result of lawsuits filed by two coalitions of attorneys general: one led by Kansas Attorney General Kris Kobach and the&nbsp;<a href="https://missouriindependent.com/2024/06/03/missouri-argues-to-block-biden-admin-s-second-student-loan-forgiveness-plan/" target="_blank">other by Missouri Attorney General Andrew Bailey</a>, representing a combined 18 states.

Crabtree dismissed eight of the 11 states represented in Kobach’s lawsuit earlier this month, finding that Alaska is the only state that can claim harm in Monday’s ruling over “$100,000 in lost (federal family education) loan interest over two years.”

Ross determined that Missouri, through quasi-governmental loan servicer MOHELA, has standing. MOHELA, the Missouri Higher Education Loan Authority,&nbsp;<a href="https://missouriindependent.com/2023/06/30/missouri-company-plays-central-role-in-downfall-of-biden-loan-forgiveness-program/" target="_blank">gave Bailey standing in a U.S. Supreme Court case</a>&nbsp;that overturned an earlier version of loan forgiveness last year.

Ross wrote that the allegations of harm to MOHELA are “substantially similar to, if not identical to,” those argued in last year’s Supreme Court case.

MOHELA has routinely distanced itself from Bailey’s litigation against loan forgiveness.

Bailey, in a press release, lauded the Missouri ruling as a win for Missourians without large amounts of student-loan debt.

“Only Congress has the power of the purse, not the president,” he wrote in a statement. “Today’s ruling was a huge win for the rule of law, and for every American who Joe Biden was about to force to pay off someone else’s debt.”

Kobach also emphasized the judge’s ruling of a lack of Congressional authorization in the SAVE Plan.

“Kansas’s victory today is a victory for the entire country,” he said. “As the court correctly held, whether to forgive billions of dollars of student debt is a major question that only Congress can answer. Biden’s administration is attempting to usurp Congress’s authority. This is not only unconstitutional, it’s unfair. ”

U.S. Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona said the Department of Justice “will continue to vigorously defend the SAVE Plan.”

“We designed SAVE to cut undergraduate loan payments in half, avoid interest growth for borrowers making zero-dollar or low payments, and allow at-risk borrowers to reach forgiveness faster,” he wrote in a statement. “Under SAVE, nearly 8 million Americans — one out of five borrowers — have breathing room from bills that, too often, compete with basic needs.”

Cardona said Republican elected officials are trying to block the plan “even though the department has relied on the authority under the Higher Education Act three times over the last 30 years to implement income-driven repayment plans.”

He promised a continued push from the federal government for student-loan forgiveness. The SAVE Plan is the department’s second iteration of forgiveness, of which&nbsp;<a href="https://www.whitehouse.gov/briefing-room/statements-releases/2024/04/08/president-joe-biden-outlines-new-plans-to-deliver-student-debt-relief-to-over-30-million-americans-under-the-biden-harris-administration/" target="_blank">three have been announced</a>. Bailey and Kobach&nbsp;<a href="https://ago.mo.gov/wp-content/uploads/2024-5-16-Student-Loan-NPRM-Interested-States-Comment-Letter.pdf" target="_blank">wrote a letter to Cardona in May</a>&nbsp;with “significant concerns” about the latest plan, which has yet to be implemented.

Federal rulings out of Mo., Kan. put Biden student-loan forgiveness on hold

LYON COUNTY — Cattle had to be euthanized after a trailer accident just before 10a.m. Monday in northern Lyon County.

A 1998 Peterbilt semi driven by Thomas Romano of New York was hauling 123 cows on U.S. 56 in Lyon County, according to Sheriff's Deputy Fernando Zuniga.

Romano&nbsp; attempted to make a right turn onto Road K. The rear passenger side axle dropped into the ditch, preventing the semi from moving. A local farmer attempted to pull vehicle using a tractor but was unsuccessful and the trailer flipped over on its right side.

Approximately 19 cows had to be euthanized on scene, according to Zuniga. There were no other injuries.

JOHNSON COUNTY —Just 35 hours apart, discarded smoking materials caused two deck fires in Olathe.

Just after 4:30a.m. Sunday, Firefighters stopped a deck fire from spreading into a home at 15820 S Widmer Street in Olathe, according to a social media report from the Olathe Fire Department.&nbsp;

There were no injuries. Investigators say discarded smoking materials caused the fire. Damage estimated at $30,000

Just after&nbsp;<a href="https://x.com/OlatheFire/status/1805352016493035813?t=210">3:30</a> p.m. Monday, crews responded to a second fire on a deck at an apartment complex near 127th Street and N Mur-Len Road.&nbsp; A timely 911 call helped keep the fire small.

Firefighters reminded, if you smoke, put cigarettes out, all the way, in an ashtray, bucket or container that won’t burn.&nbsp; Put water on the ashes and butts to make sure they are really out before discarding them.

Discarded smoking materials blamed for 2 deck fires in Kansas

KANSAS CITY —One person was injured in an accident with a police vehicle just before 10a.m. on Monday.

According to KCPD Sergeant Phil DiMartino, a Mitsubishi Endeavor was westbound on 57th Street at Woodland in Kansas City.&nbsp;

The driver of the Mitsubishi failed to stop for the posted stop sign and entered the intersection. A northbound marked blue KCPD Ford Explorer struck the Mitsubishi. EMS transported the driver and sole occupant of the Mitsubishi to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

 The KCPD officer received non-life-threatening injuries but was not transported to a medical facility, according to DiMartino. The accident remains under investigation.

Driver hospitalized after crash with KCPD vehicle

SHAWNEE COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating two suspects on multiple allegations following a burglary call in Shawnee County.

Just before 9a.m. Thursday, deputies responded to a possible burglary in the 6600 block of NW 94th Street, according to Deputy Abigail Christian. 

While in route, significant information was gathered and the suspect vehicle was stopped by deputies near NW 35th Street and NW Huxman Road.

During the investigation illegal narcotics were located. Stacy L. Ripple, 37, was arrested and booked into the Shawnee County Department of Corrections on requested charges of burglary, possession of stolen property, distribution of narcotics, possession of drug paraphernalia, theft, defective mirror and no vehicle liability insurance.

Matthew R. Scheidegger, 41, was also arrested and booked into the SNDOC on requested charges of violating a protection order. Ripple was the protected party of that order.&nbsp;

Kan. woman went on crime spree with subject of protection order

ST. CLAIR —A Missouri teen died in an accident just after noon Monday in St. Clair County.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported a 1999 Olds Alero driven by a 16-year-old Osceola boy was eastbound on MO 82 just east of NE 775 Road two miles east of Osceola.

The car traveled off the right side of the road and the driver overcorrected. The car crossed the center of the road and overturned.

The teen was pronounced dead at the scene and was transported to Sheldon Funeral Home. He was not wearing a seat belt, according to the MSHP.

16-year-old Missouri boy dies after car overturns

SEDGWICK COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities investigating a fatal-hit-and run accident and have arrested a 19-year-old woman from Wichita. The crash killed 28-year-old Jaz Brooks from Wichita.

Just after 3a.m. Sunday, police responded to a vehicular collision at the intersection of Central and Mclean, according to Officer Kris Gupilan.

First responders discovered a dark-colored Saturn involved in the incident. The passenger, identified as Brooks, was found trapped inside the vehicle and pronounced deceased. The driver of the Saturn received an evaluation by EMS for non-lifethreatening injuries at the scene.

She&nbsp;bonded out of jail just before 7p.m.This case will be presented to the District Attorney’s office.
