The commander of the VFW post condemned the ‘raid’ that took place on 9/11, though the state said it was responding to a complaint

Not long after Commander Jason Stanfield had lowered the flag Wednesday to honor the lives lost on Sept. 11 at his Franklin County VFW Post, he learned state food inspectors had arrived.&nbsp;

“It’s not an easy day,” Stanfield said. “9/11 is a tough day for all of us, particularly for veterans. I was not in the best mindset.”

The regulators said they had received a complaint that the post’s bar had been selling seltzers that contain hemp-derived THC — which has the same intoxicating effect as THC from marijuana that’s sold at dispensaries.&nbsp;

The bar was selling a brand of fruity seltzers called&nbsp;<a href="https://www.urlitproducts.com/" target="_blank">UR Lit</a>, which contains 5mg of Delta-9 THC.

While hemp is federally legal, Missouri recently joined a growing number of states trying to&nbsp;<a href="https://missouriindependent.com/2024/08/12/hemp-industry-leaders-call-missouri-governors-order-banning-thc-products-an-overreach/">ban</a>&nbsp;all intoxicating hemp products.

When Gov. Mike Parson signed his&nbsp;<a href="https://www.sos.mo.gov/library/reference/orders/2024/eo10" target="_blank">executive order</a>&nbsp;on Aug. 1 to ban the products,&nbsp;he&nbsp;said his primary focus was to protect children consuming the products that resemble popular candy, like Lifesavers, or fruity drinks.

Given the governor’s goal, Stanfield said he was surprised the state wanted to inspect the post, where members are well over 21.

“There’s not a whole lot of kids that run around the VFW,” he said.&nbsp;

Since the ban went into effect on Sept. 1,&nbsp;Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services&nbsp;<a href="https://missouriindependent.com/2024/09/06/missouri-regulators-visit-nearly-50-stores-to-inspect-for-intoxicating-hemp-edibles/">officials have inspected</a>&nbsp;74 establishments and found intoxicating products at 42 of them, said Lisa Cox, spokeswoman for the department.&nbsp;

On a&nbsp;<a href="https://www.facebook.com/share/p/dUkMLXYkpVoYW3a2/" target="_blank">social media post</a>&nbsp;on Wednesday, Stanfield described the inspection as a “raid,” but Cox said that&nbsp;description is “misleading” because there were just two inspectors responding to a complaint.&nbsp;

“The two inspectors were let inside through a locked door upon request,” Cox said, “but quickly recognized that the VFW Post did not pose an immediate cause for concern, specifically in regard to Missouri children. As a result, zero product was embargoed or destroyed.”

Cox said the department has “no plans in place of returning to the establishment.”

<a href="https://missouriindependent.com/briefs/with-missouri-regulations-in-flux-whats-the-difference-between-hemp-and-marijuana/">Hemp and marijuana</a>&nbsp;are essentially terms the government uses to distinguish between the part of the cannabis plant that can get you high when smoked – that’s marijuana – and the part that can’t — that’s hemp.&nbsp;

But with a little science and extraction, people can enhance the small amount of the naturally occurring THC, or the psychoactive component, in hemp to make edibles and drinks.&nbsp;

Because hemp isn’t a controlled substance like marijuana, there’s no state or federal law saying teenagers or children can’t buy products, such as delta-8 drinks, or that stores can’t sell them to minors, Parson said.&nbsp;

And there’s no requirement to list potential effects on the label or test how much THC is actually in them. State lawmakers have failed to pass such&nbsp;<a href="https://missouriindependent.com/2024/02/13/push-for-restrictions-on-intoxicating-hemp-products-spurs-clash-over-who-should-regulate/">requirements</a>&nbsp;the last two years.

Stanfield said the state ban is harmful for VFW members who are trying to recover from alcoholism or opioid addiction.&nbsp;

“I have testimony after testimony in my post alone of people that are still alive today,” Stanfield said, “because they use cannabis to get off of their opioids that they were addicted to.”

During the inspection, he said the DHSS employees told him that the drinks were considered “adulterated.” If a product is considered adulterated,&nbsp;<a href="https://missouriindependent.com/briefs/missouri-attorney-general-to-help-crack-down-on-intoxicating-hemp-products/">DHSS</a>&nbsp;has the&nbsp;authority to embargo it&nbsp;– which means put a tag on it until the department gets a court order to destroy it.&nbsp;

Stanfield points to the state law that says, “a food shall not be considered adulterated solely for containing industrial hemp, or an industrial hemp commodity or product.”

That line was added to Missouri’s law in 2018, after Congress legalized hemp as part of the federal Farm Bill. It was part of a Missouri House<a href="https://documents.house.mo.gov/billtracking/bills181/hlrbillspdf/5739S.09T.pdf" target="_blank">&nbsp;bill&nbsp;</a>that brought the state’s definition of hemp in alignment with the federal government’s.

It is the same law fueling the Missouri Hemp Trade Association’s&nbsp;<a href="https://missouriindependent.com/2024/08/30/missouri-hemp-leaders-set-to-file-suit-to-halt-governors-ban-on-hemp-thc-products/">lawsuit</a>&nbsp;against the governor’s ban.&nbsp;

“I will continue to comply with federal law and sell these products until they’re not legal,” Stanfield said, “to give my veterans a non-alcoholic option in a place where they can come and be with other veterans and not have to consume alcohol.”

Missouri VFW inspected by state regulators as part of ban on intoxicating hemp products

TOPEKA, KAN. – A federal jury convicted a Kansas man of assault with a deadly weapon following an incident on a United States Army installation, according to the United State's Attorney.

In November 2023, Jordan Thompson, 24, assaulted an adult male victim while at Fort Riley.

According to court documents and evidence presented at trial, Thompson was involved in a domestic dispute with his estranged wife. He used a 9 mm caliber pistol to threaten the victim who was at the home of the child’s mother, and then left with the minor. The incident prompted officials to issue an Amber Alert.

Thompson is scheduled to be sentenced on December 12, and faces a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison. A federal district court judge will determine any sentence after considering the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and other statutory factors.

The Department of Army Criminal Investigation Division, Fort Riley Department of the Army

Civilian Police, Kansas Bureau of Investigation, Federal Bureau of Investigation, Kansas Highway

Patrol, and the Butler County Sheriff’s Office investigated the case.

Jury: Man guilty in connection with Amber Alert incident at Fort Riley

SHAWNEE COUNTY — A woman is in custody following a vehicle theft and kidnapping that led to a pursuit on eastbound Interstate 70 on Thursday afternoon.

Just after 1:15 p.m., police responded&nbsp; to a reported vehicle theft at the BP gas station located at 600 SE Quincy Street in Topeka, according to police spokesperson Rosie Nichols

 It was reported that a vehicle was stolen with an adult female with special needs still inside. The suspect then fled eastbound on Interstate 70.

TPD officers responded and shared information with state law enforcement partners related to the incident. Authorities from Kansas Highway Patrol Troop G located and attempted to stop the vehicle near mile marker 200 on I-70, and the driver fled initiating a pursuit. 

The pursuit ended near mile marker 225 after stop sticks were deployed and Tactical Vehicle Intervention (TVI) techniques were used. The suspect was detained and the female passenger was returned to her guardians without further incident.

As a result of the investigation, LaShantese V. Ward, 29, of Topeka, was arrested and booked into the Shawnee County Department of Corrections on requested charges of Aggravated burglary; Vehicle; to commit felony, theft, DV or sexually motivated crime, Kidnapping; In Flight Or The Commission Of Any Crime, Theft &gt;$1,500&lt;$25,000 Motor Vehicle, Aggravated battery; Recklessly cause great bodily harm/disfigurement, Criminal Damage To Property; Misdemeanor, Interference with LEO; Conceal/alter/destroy evidence in felony case, Theft; shoplifting Unknown Value Theft &lt;$1,500 From Motor Vehicle.

Kan. carjacking arrest:  Vehicle had passenger with special needs

KANSAS CITY —Law enforcement investigating a road-rage shooting have made an arrest.

At approximately 4:30p.m. Thursday, a citizen was the victim of a road rage shooting, according to the Excelsior Springs Police Deparatment. The incident began at Walmart and the shooting occurred at Schwartz and 69 Highway near the ES Animal Clinic.

  The suspect left in an unknown direction. The vehicle was described as a full size Chevrolet van, dark blue, a spare tire on the rear door and an unknown rectangular type equipment attacked to the trailer hitch and with Ohio license plate JGV 2365.

 Driver is described as an older white male. Just before 8p.m. Thursday, police reported with the help of the Clay County, Missouri Sheriff's office they had identified and taken the suspect into custody.&nbsp; The name of the suspect has not been released.

Just after 5:30p.m. Thursday,&nbsp; police&nbsp;received information of a potential threat to Meadows Elementary School,&nbsp;201 SW Clay Street in Topeka, according to Topeka Police Captain Jerry Monasmith. 

Federal law enforcement partners and the USD 501 Police were immediately notified and an investigation began.

Police have located all individuals involved and no threat has been identified. Law enforcement are collaborating to ensure a safe conclusion to the school week Friday.

The Topeka Police Department reminded the public that any threat of violence, whether spoken or online, is a serious matter and will be fully investigated.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Police investigate alleged threat toward Kansas middle school

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Kansas Tourism unveiled its Mobile Visitor Center (MVC) on Thursday at the Kansas State Fair with a ribbon cutting inside the Pride of Kansas building.

The MVC will attend major sporting events, fairs, trade shows and festivals in and out of the state to help attract guests to visit Kansas.

Lieutenant Governor and Secretary of Commerce David Toland and&nbsp;Kansas Department of Transportation Secretary Calvin Reed joined Kansas Tourism Director Bridgette Jobe at the event on Thursday.

“Kansas is home to endless views, unique geography, one of a kind sights, vibrant communities and amazing people," Reed said. "Whether its a road trip that takes you to the Gypsum Hills, a treasure hunt on US-36, a camping trip to one of our many beautiful lakes, or hiking and biking on over 800 miles of biking and pedestrian trails in our state, Kansas is a destination for all road trips. Today, I am proud to be a part of the unveiling of the Kansas Mobile Visitors Center, which will provide us with the opportunity to showcase our amazing state."

Toland talked about how the idea and vision came about for the MVC.

"About a year and a half ago we had a series of conversations with the Kansas Tourism team," Toland said. "They were about the World Cup and specifically the east side of the state and the need for a visitors information center somewhere along I-70. So we had some conversations and decided to talk to KDOT to see what we could do."

Toland says Reed and his staff listened to the idea and had an even better vision.

"KDOT came with a concept of a mobile visitor center," Toland said. "They did some research about what cities around the country had been doing. There is a model where you don't wait for them to come to you, you go to them. You go to the people you want to bring to your place."

Toland and his staff were skeptical of this vision in the beginning, but now has a different opinion.

"They (KDOT) were right," Toland said. "They were absolutely right that we need to think differently about how we bring people to Kansas. It's not just about expecting them to pull off the highway and stop at our place. We need to go to Dallas, to Denver, to Ames, Iowa, to Lincoln, Nebraska, to Chicago and make the case for why they should come here."&nbsp;

Toland was very appreciative and supportive for all of the hard work done to bring visitors to the Sunflower State by Kansas Tourism and its Director Bridgette Jobe.

"I also want to think the Kansas Tourism team, because they are always open to those new ideas," Toland said. "Kansas has now achieved visitation numbers that are dramatically above where we were pre-COVID. We've got more people to come to Kansas than ever before, and that's because this team is getting out there and hustling. They're doing it in-person, they're going to the trade shows and our numbers are way up."

The van will hit the road shortly after the Kansas State Fair to make its debut outside of the state.

"I think two days after the fair is over he (Kevin Crockett) is heading to Nebraska City for a major event," Jobe said. "We have it scheduled to be on the road every week between now and the end of the year."

"They did some research about what cities around the country had been doing. There is a model where you don't wait for them to come to you, you go to them. You go to the people you want to bring to your place."Toland and his staff were skeptical of this vision in the beginning, but now has a different opinion.<figure>

It's not just about expecting them to pull off the highway and stop at our place. We need to go to Dallas, to Denver, to Ames, Iowa, to Lincoln, Nebraska, to Chicago and make the case for why they should come here."&nbsp;Toland was very appreciative and supportive for all of the hard work done to bring visitors to the Sunflower State by Kansas Tourism and its Director Bridgette Jobe."I also want to think the Kansas Tourism team, because they are always open to those new ideas," Toland said. "Kansas has now achieved visitation numbers that are dramatically above where we were pre-COVID. We've got more people to come to Kansas than ever before, and that's because this team is getting out there and hustling. They're doing it in-person, they're going to the trade shows and our numbers are way up."The van will hit the road shortly after the Kansas State Fair to make its debut outside of the state."I think two days after the fair is over he (Kevin Crockett) is heading to Nebraska City for a major event," Jobe said. "We have it scheduled to be on the road every week between now and the end of the year."

KANSAS CITY —Law enforcement are investigating&nbsp; a fatal shooting in Kansas City have identified the victim as 43-year-old&nbsp;Willie L. Judon III, according to KCKPD Officer&nbsp;Alayna Gonzalez.

Just before 11:45p.m. Wednesday, police were&nbsp;dispatched to a shooting in 4000 block of Norton, according to Sheriff Daryl Forte'.&nbsp;

 Officers located two adult shooting victims suffering from gunshot wounds. Judon was&nbsp; on the porch of a home and pronounced dead at scene. EMS transported a female victim to an area hospital

Detectives continue investigating what led up to shots being fired. There is not currently anyone in custody and detectives are working on identifying a person of interest.

Homicide: Police ID man found dead on porch of KC home

Kansas man dies in wrong-way, head-on crash with a semi

SHAWNEE COUNTY—Law enforcement are investigating a now former Kansas Sheriff's office employee on multiple allegations of perjury and falsifying documents.

 In late June, the Shawnee County Sheriff’s Office became aware that a civilian employee, Andrew Johnson, 52, of Topeka, Kansas, had possibly falsified certain records related to the service of court documents.

Johnson, who had been employed by the agency as a civil process server for approximately six months, was immediately placed on administrative leave and removed from all job duties.

The Sheriff’s Office initiated a criminal investigation into the matter, with detectives and staff officers reviewing the entirety of Johnson’s work history with the agency, including all activitym for each day of Johnson’s employment.

On July 2, Johnson was terminated from the Shawnee County Sheriff’s Office. Notification of the investigative findings was made to the Shawnee County District Court, and results of the criminal investigation were forwarded to the Shawnee County District Attorney’s Office for prosecution.

Just after 3p.m. Wednesday,&nbsp; Shawnee County grand jury indicted Johnson on 333 total felony counts of perjury and making false information. A warrant was issued for Johnson’s arrest and he was booked into the Shawnee County Department of Corrections.

The Shawnee County Sheriff’s Office is continuing to work with court officials to remediate any issue related to this matter and the court documents previously assigned to Johnson for service.

Notification will be made by the Shawnee County District Court to all parties whose cases were involved in the investigation.

 Kan. sheriff’s office employee indicted on 333 felony counts

KANSAS CITY– Three Mexican nationals were charged in federal court last week after they were caught with more than 56 pounds of methamphetamine during a traffic stop on Interstate 29, according to the United State's Attorney.

Pedro Alberto Quiroz Ayala, 20, Apolinar Gocovachi Pacheco, 24, and Pablo De Jesus Peralta Anguis, 25, all of whom are citizens of Mexico, were charged with possessing methamphetamine with the intent to distribute in a complaint filed in the U.S. District Court. They remain in federal custody pending a detention hearing on Tuesday, Sept. 10.

According to an affidavit filed in support of the federal criminal complaint, a Missouri State Highway Patrol trooper pulled over a gray 2011 Acura MDX on Interstate 29, near the N.W. 112th&nbsp;Street exit in Kansas City at about 9:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 3. Ayala, who did not have a valid driver’s license, was driving the Acura, with a female juvenile in the front passenger seat and Pacheco and Anguis in the back seats.

When the trooper searched the vehicle, he found a large duffle bag in the third-row seating area that contained approximately 55.6 pounds of methamphetamine. He also found a grocery bag that contained approximately one pound of methamphetamine on the floorboard where the female juvenile had been sitting, and a loaded firearm in the driver’s door pouch.

When the four occupants got out of the vehicle for the search, the affidavit says, Ayala and Anguis fled on foot. A manhunt ensued; Ayala was apprehended about half an hour later and Anguis was apprehended after about 12 minutes.

Ayala told investigators they had picked up the drugs at a Walmart parking lot in Omaha, Nebraska. Ayala said he was going to receive $2,000 for transporting the drugs.

WICHITA —A man arrested following a Kansas Amber Alert faces multiple requested charges after police captured him and rescued the 5-year-old boy.

Just before 5 p.m. Wednesday, 5-year-old Trevawn Strong Jr. was forcibly taken from his mother by his father 30-year-old Trevawn Strong Sr. utilizing a knife and firearm during a domestic incident at their residence at 2025 S. Grove, Wichita, according to police.

&nbsp;Strong&nbsp; threatened to kill his son, stabbed the boy's mother, and took the child.&nbsp; The Kansas Bureau reported the was in imminent danger. The suspect left in a vehicle, but that vehicle was been recovered in the 1900 block of N. Woodlawn in Wichita.&nbsp;

The K-State Radio Centennial: A Century of Sound and Service is scheduled from 10-11 a.m. near the radio towers on the west side of Nichols Hall on the Manhattan campus.

Missouri Attorney General Andrew Bailey is creating a new specialized unit to assist the state’s alcohol and tobacco regulators in cracking down on intoxicating hemp products, Bailey announced at a Capitol press conference Tuesday afternoon.&nbsp;

The announcement comes after Gov. Mike Parson’s&nbsp;<a href="https://missouriindependent.com/2024/08/12/hemp-industry-leaders-call-missouri-governors-order-banning-thc-products-an-overreach/">ban on these products</a>&nbsp;hit a delay of up to six months.

The ban was supposed to take effect on Sept. 1, after Parson signed an&nbsp;<a href="https://www.sos.mo.gov/library/reference/orders/2024/eo10" target="_blank">executive order</a>&nbsp;on Aug. 1 to remove all hemp-derived THC edibles and beverages from store shelves. However last month, Missouri Secretary of State Jay Ashcroft rejected the emergency rules detailing how it would have been enforced.

That meant regulators at the&nbsp;Division of Alcohol and Tobacco Control didn’t have the authority to enforce the ban among stores that have licenses to sell liquor or tobacco products — which is where the vast majority of products are being sold, Parson said.&nbsp;

Ashcroft’s action did not prevent&nbsp;the Department of Health and Senior Services’ regulators from&nbsp;<a href="https://missouriindependent.com/2024/09/06/missouri-regulators-visit-nearly-50-stores-to-inspect-for-intoxicating-hemp-edibles/">investigating nearly 60 facilities</a>, Parson said.

“DHSS investigations have confirmed our fears,” Parson said. “Product after product resembles popular snacks and candies that would be hard for me to determine that contained cannabis, let alone my five-year-old granddaughter.”

Parson said the main target of his order are companies that sell intoxicating hemp edibles that mimic popular candy. However,&nbsp;<a href="https://missouriindependent.com/2024/08/12/hemp-industry-leaders-call-missouri-governors-order-banning-thc-products-an-overreach/">hemp industry leaders argue</a>&nbsp;the order also bans products that aren’t attractive to children, have gone through lab testing and are only sold to customers 21 and up.

“The Missouri Hemp Trade Association agrees that illegal products should be removed from store shelves,” said Craig Katz, spokesman for the association. “But DHSS is casting such a wide net that it is not differentiating legitimate products from bad products, and in the process, it is trampling on the constitution and ruining small businesses.”

The association has decried DHSS’ enforcement of these products. It filed a&nbsp;<a href="https://www.documentcloud.org/documents/25083049-petition-for-declaratory-judgment-preliminary-injunction-and-permanent-injunctive-relief" target="_blank">lawsuit</a>&nbsp;on Aug. 30 in Cole County Circuit Court in hopes of&nbsp;<a href="https://missouriindependent.com/2024/08/30/missouri-hemp-leaders-set-to-file-suit-to-halt-governors-ban-on-hemp-thc-products/">stopping the governor’s ban</a>&nbsp;through a preliminary injunction. The association argues the products are legal and state law prohibits regulators from deeming them as “adulterated.”

“DHSS must stop seizing and destroying products that are legal and follow the letter of the law,” Katz said.

At the Tuesday press conference, Bailey said his office will create a “dedicated electronic repository” for the Division of Alcohol and Tobacco Control to submit actionable referrals to his office. The division will be responsible for “investigating its licensees, collecting evidence of deceptive marketing practices,” Bailey said.&nbsp;

Bailey’s specialized new unit within his office’s Consumer Protection Division will work with the ATC to offer legal support, he said. His office will use its authority under the Missouri Merchandising Practices Act to bring legal action against licensees who continue prohibited practices related to unregulated psychoactive cannabis products, he said.&nbsp;

“The ATC will assist by making its investigators available as witnesses for legal proceedings resulting from actionable referrals,” Bailey said. “Our enforcement toolkit will be robust from cease-and-desist letters and investigations to subpoenas and lawsuits to referrals for criminal prosecution where appropriate.”

He believes this partnership will lead to a significant reduction in these products.

“We’re committed to keeping unsafe products away from our kids,” Bailey said, “and ensuring that those who break the law are held accountable.”

His office will use its authority under the Missouri Merchandising Practices Act to bring legal action against licensees who continue prohibited practices related to unregulated psychoactive cannabis products, he said.&nbsp;“The ATC will assist by making its investigators available as witnesses for legal proceedings resulting from actionable referrals,” Bailey said. “Our enforcement toolkit will be robust from cease-and-desist letters and investigations to subpoenas and lawsuits to referrals for criminal prosecution where appropriate.”He believes this partnership will lead to a significant reduction in these products.“We’re committed to keeping unsafe products away from our kids,” Bailey said, “and ensuring that those who break the law are held accountable.”

Missouri AG to help crack down on intoxicating hemp products

KIOWA COUNTY—An 87-year-old man remains jailed on multiple allegations after a standoff at a Kansas home, according to Kiowa County jail records.

Just after 4:30p.m. September 2, the Greensburg Police Department and Kiowa County Sheriff's Office were dispatched to a shots fired call in the 400 block of Main Street&nbsp; in Greensburg, according to a media release. 

 When officers arrived, they discovered 87-year-old Jack A. Loesch had fired shots inside his residence and barricaded himself inside the residence. 

 Area residents were evacuated and calls for assistance were made to the Kansas Highway Patrol and the Pratt County Sheriff's Office.&nbsp;

Just after 7p.m. negotiations were successful and Loesch was taken into custody without incident.  No injuries were reported to civilians or law enforcement.  The case is being investigated by the Greensburg Police Department.&nbsp; Loesch is being held on a $500,000 bond on a requested charge of Aggravated assault, Use of a deadly weapon.

Just before 9a.m. Friday, police responded to the 1300 block of SW Western in Topeka on a report of an individual down, according to Police Lt. Matt Danielson.

First responders located&nbsp; 47-year-old Michael Sanchez suffering from gunshot wounds. He was pronounced deceased on scene.

As a result of the investigation, 23-year-old Caleb Horton of Topeka was taken to the Shawnee County Department of Corrections on requested charges: Murder in the 1 st Degree, Unlawful discharge of a firearm in the city limits and Criminal possession of a weapon by a felon.

Suspect accused of murder of man outside Kansas home

SEDGWICK COUNTY —Law enforcement successfully recovered a stolen U-Haul trailer containing approximately $21,763 worth of band equipment, according to Wichita Police Department spokesman Andrew Ford.

At 10a.m. September 6, officers responded to a larceny report at the Spring Hill Suites, 1220 North Greenwich in&nbsp; &nbsp;Wichita. The victim, a band member, reported that their U-Haul trailer, which had been attached to their gold Ford Econoline passenger van, was stolen. The van was parked at the hotel around 1a.m. after the band performed at the Cotillion. 

When the band returned to their vehicle around 7a.m. to continue their travels, they discovered the trailer missing.

The trailer contained the band’s musical equipment valued at over $21,700, according to an inventory list provided by the band. The U-Haul trailer, owned by the U-Haul rental company, was also reported stolen.

Later, while investigating an unrelated stolen vehicle report involving a Ford F-250, officers located a stolen U-Haul box truck bearing a Kansas tag. Upon further investigation, it was determined that the same U-Haul had been involved in the trailer theft. Officers cut the lock on the stolen trailer and discovered the stolen band equipment inside.

All but a Yamaha MX49 Keyboard and a cash box containing $1,300, including band merchandise such as t-shirts and other items, were successfully recovered. 

Police have not made an arrest in the case, according to Ford.

The Wichita Police Department urges anyone with additional information about this case to contact&nbsp;WPD or Crime Stoppers at 316-267-2111.

Police recover $21K in band equipment stolen from Kansas hotel

JASPER COUNTY —One person died in an accident just after 1p.m. Wednesday in Jasper County.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported a 2021 Freightliner trash truck driven by Kim L. Melvin, 56, Joplin, was eastbound on Route M nine miles west of Joplin.

The vehicle traveled partially off the right side of the road. The driver overcorrected, traveled off the left side of the road and overturned. Melvin was pronounced dead at the scene.

EMS transported a passenger Darrall W. Taylor, 65, Webb City, to Freeman West Hospital. Both were properly restrained, according to the MSHP.

Kansas man dies after motorcycle rear-ends a pickup

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Reno County Sheriff's Office made an arrest Wednesday morning after a chase and a short standoff.

8 a.m. Wednesday, deputies attempted to stop a maroon 2005 Chevrolet Tahoe in the area of 4th and K-61 that was displaying a stolen tag out of Wichita, according to a media release.

The vehicle fled from deputies in an attempt to escape.

The vehicle exited off K-61 on to Avenue A. Deputies were authorized to perform a tactical vehicle intervention before the Tahoe got to HMS-7.

A successful TVI was executed near Avenue A and Pershing. The vehicle continued through yards, alleyways and sidewalks before crashing into a backyard of 1207 East Avenue B.&nbsp;

A short standoff ensued, as the driver refused to follow commands and threatened deputies and officers. Chemical munitions and less lethal options were used to take the suspect into custody.

The driver was identified as 54-year-old Robbie Lee Miller of Wichita.&nbsp;

Miller was booked into the Reno County Correctional Facility on requested drug charges and charges related to the chase.&nbsp;

Miller has over a dozen convictions that include theft, criminal threat, flee and elude and for drugs, according to the Kansas Department of Corrections.

Hutchinson Police and Reno County EMS assisted in the case.

WICHITA —Trevawn Strong Jr. has been located and is safe with the Wichita Police Department, according to the KBI. The Amber Alert is canceled.&nbsp; Law enforcement also located the suspect 30-year-old&nbsp;Trevawn Strong Sr.&nbsp; Police released no additional details.

At 4:56 p.m., Trevawn Strong Jr. was forcibly taken from his mother by his father Trevawn Strong Sr. utilizing a knife and firearm during a domestic incident at their residence at 2025 S. Grove, Wichita, according to police.

&nbsp;Strong&nbsp; threatened to kill his son, stabbed his mother, and took the child. Strong is a black male, 30-years-old with long dark hair, facial hair, and tattoos on his arms, chest, neck and under his eye. Strong is 5 ft. 8 inches tall and weighs around 175 pounds. He was last known wearing a white t-shirt, gray shorts and red shoes.&nbsp;

Trevawn Jr. is in imminent danger. The suspect left in a vehicle, but that vehicle has been recovered in the 1900 block of N. Woodlawn in Wichita, Kansas.

The child was last seen wearing wearing a white t-shirt, black shorts, black shoes and his hair is in a ponytail.

House Democrats on Wednesday made an unsuccessful push to override Missouri Gov. Mike Parson’s veto of $2.5 million in funding for oversight of the state’s nursing homes, with all but eight Republicans voting to sustain the governor’s action.

It is the second year in a row Parson has vetoed funding for nursing home oversight.&nbsp;

Deb Lavender, a Democrat from Manchester, led the effort, arguing that the money would make Missouri’s nursing home residents safer.“There are complaints that are going unanswered,” Lavender said, adding that&nbsp;<a href="https://projects.propublica.org/nursing-homes/state/MO" target="_blank">one-third of Missouri’s nursing homes</a>&nbsp;have been found to have serious deficiencies.The additional funding would have helped the state’s long-term care ombudsman program hire more staff to advocate for nursing home residents.The ombudsman program is composed of staff and volunteers&nbsp;<a href="https://acl.gov/programs/Protecting-Rights-and-Preventing-Abuse/Long-term-Care-Ombudsman-Program" target="_blank">tasked</a>&nbsp;with helping protect and advocate for the interests of nursing home residents. They often serve as liaisons between a resident and the facility when issues arise, investigating and resolving complaints. Ombudsmen can help ensure residents are able to go to the bathroom, take their medications and be fed on time, for instance.Missouri has consistently had one of the lowest nursing home staffing levels in the country which can contribute to residents not receiving proper care.&nbsp;The motion to override Parson’s veto failed by a vote of 56 for and 81 against. All Democrats present voted for the override. All but eight Republicans voted against it.&nbsp;“We just wanted to bring voice to the lack of being able to care for our seniors,” Lavender said during a press conference after the vote, adding that it was “no surprise” that a Democrat asking to overrule the Republican governor failed.&nbsp;In the scope of a $50 billion state budget, Lavender said, the governor’s decision to strip out the $2.5 million “doesn’t make sense to me.”“This is twice we put it in,” she said, “and the governor has taken it back out.”&nbsp;The state budget signed by Gov. Parson in June left&nbsp;<a href="https://governor.mo.gov/press-releases/archive/putting-people-first-governor-parson-takes-action-fy25-state-operating" target="_blank">$1.9 billion unspent.&nbsp;</a>Parson&nbsp;<a href="https://oa.mo.gov/sites/default/files/Fiscal_Year_2025_HB_2010_Signed_Letter.pdf" target="_blank">wrote</a>&nbsp;to lawmakers this summer explaining his veto&nbsp; that “while this supports the important goal of helping seniors throughout the state, there is insufficient funding from the appropriated source to support this item.”&nbsp;Last year, his veto letter noted&nbsp;a general need to ensure a balanced budget and the “financial stability of Missouri.”Republican state Rep&nbsp;Jim Kalberloh of St. Clair said during the floor debate he was voting against the override to respect that there is “a reason why they did this,” referring to the governor’s office’s veto, but that he supports the funding and wants the legislature to try again next year to pass it.“We spend a lot of money on a lot of things,” Kalberloh said, “If we can’t protect our elderly and are disabled, then we can think about where our money is going.”Democratic state Rep. Doug Clemens, of St. Louis responded to Kalberloh, saying: “It’s our job, our responsibility to reflect the needs of our constituency,” rather than the will of the governor. Clemens said he has senior constituents who would benefit from the ombudsman program having more resources.“And I don’t think it’s worthwhile to let somebody wait another year for us to get our act together,” he said. “…This is a paltry sum compared to the rest of our budget.”In a&nbsp;<a href="https://states.aarp.org/missouri/new-aarp-scorecard-missouri-ranks-38th-in-the-country-for-long-term-care-services-and-supports-for-older-americans-including-family-caregivers" target="_blank">report</a>&nbsp;from AARP last year, Missouri ranked 48th in the country for nursing home quality and 46th in nursing home staff levels and turnover.The most recent federal staffing data, updated in July,&nbsp;<a href="https://missouriindependent.com/briefs/missouri-has-dramatically-reduced-its-backlog-of-nursing-home-inspections/">showed</a>&nbsp;Missouri residents receive 3.3 hours of daily care, on average. That’s below the&nbsp;<a href="https://missouriindependent.com/2024/04/23/feds-set-higher-nursing-home-staffing-mandates-many-missouri-facilities-dont-meet-them/">federal standard</a>&nbsp;going into effect in the next few years,&nbsp;and was second only to Texas for the worst in the country.Lenny Jones, state director of the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) Healthcare Missouri, which represents nursing home staff, told The Independent in an interview the cut is a disservice to residents and workers, and many of the issues arise from low staffing.“There should be more eyes on what’s going on in nursing homes, not less,” he said.“So the more opportunities for family members, for residents, to be able to contact the ombudsman and issues around that is important, because that’s really, in many cases, the only voice.”&nbsp;Marjorie Moore,&nbsp;executive director of VOYCE St. Louis, an advocacy group for long-term care residents, said she was “really disappointed” in the vote Wednesday but “gratified” that more legislators and Missourians broadly are becoming aware of the need for the program and issues in nursing homes.“We’re calling on whoever may be governor next year and next year’s legislators to continue this fight and get this funding in,” she said, “because this is an issue that’s not going away in any way shape or form.”Missouri will have an increasing population of older adults, she said, and “we’re only going to have more people who are going to need those advocates.”Moore&nbsp;said, despite the state’s failure to bring resources to the level needed, people should know the program is still operating statewide and residents in every nursing home throughout Missouri can&nbsp;<a href="https://www.cms.gov/contacts/long-term-care-ombudsman-missouri/general-beneficiary-contact/1553881" target="_blank">contact them</a>&nbsp;with concerns.&nbsp;
