SHAWNEE COUNTY —Law enforcement are investigating four suspects on drug allegations.

On December 31, 2024, members of the Topeka Police Department Narcotics Unit served a search warrant in the 2100 BLK SE Adams ST. related to an ongoing investigation according to Police LT Ronnie Connell.

While conducting the search warrant, officers located Methamphetamine, Cocaine, Dimethyltryptamine, a strong psychedelic drug, and drug paraphernalia.

As a result, Samantha Kern, 41; Donald Eteeyan, 48; Ashley Schippers, 34 and Michael Metz, 51, were transported to the Shawnee County Department of Corrections.

Police found cocaine, DMT during drug bust at Kansas home

JEFFERSON COUNTY, Mo. —Law enforcement officers never know what to expect when they go to work each day. Sheriff's deputies in Jefferson County, Missouri worked an unusual call on Friday.

Shortly before 4p.m., deputies responded to the area of Hwys 21 and M for reports of a subject monkeying around, according to the Jefferson County Sheriff social media page.

"First-responding units found the subject was naked except for what appeared to be a tutu.&nbsp;After careful negotiations, Deputies were able to get close enough to go “hands on” with the subject and bring this bananas situation under control without incident."

"In all seriousness, this is a great example of law enforcement officers never knowing what they’ll face on any given call, and having to be prepared to handle whatever the job throws at them."

"This spider monkey was staying at a nearby home when it managed to open a door and get outside. Deputies surrounded the animal and eventually got it back to its caretaker. What a day!"

Deputies capture suspect reported monkeying around

WICHITA, KAN. – A man and woman from Kansas have been charged through criminal complaint in Wichita on charges related to a series of bank robberies involving a firearm, according to the United State's Attorney.

According to court documents, Zane Tilcock, 20, of Wichita is charged with three counts of bank robbery. Emily Wise, 18, of Wichita is charged with one count of bank robbery.

Tilcock is accused of brandishing a firearm to rob three banks in December of 2024. He allegedly robbed Intrust Bank on South Webb Road in Wichita on December 11, Emprise Bank on East Harry Street in Wichita on December 16, and Sunflower Bank on North Jefferson Street in Junction City on December 27. The JCPD confirmed Tilcock was originally from Junction City and was on parole from the Department of Corrections in Wichita.

Wise is accused of robbing Emprise Bank in Wichita on December 16, 2024.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), Wichita Police Department, Junction City Police Department, and the Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office are investigating the case

18-year-old woman jailed for Kansas bank robbery

KANSAS CITY—Law enforcement are investigating the death of woman who was the subject of a missing person report.

Just before 5p.m. Thursday, police responded to the 3500 block of Stadium Drive on a suspicious person call for service, according to KCPD&nbsp;Sergeant Phil DiMartino.

When officers arrived they were directed to a vehicle in the area. There they located a victim later identified as 48-year-old Brandi L. Crout suffering from an apparent gunshot wound.&nbsp; 

Emergency medical personnel responded and declared her deceased. On Wednesday, police asked for help to find her.&nbsp; She was&nbsp;last seen just after 8p.m. New Year's Day around 45th Terrace and Willow Ave in her black 2004 Chevy Tahoe.

Detectives and crime scene personnel are working to determine the circumstances that led up to her death.

Police: Missing Kansas City woman found dead

&nbsp;JACKSON COUNTY—Law enforcement are investigating a suspect on drug allegations.

Just after 8:30a.m. Dec. 31, a&nbsp;Sheriff’s Deputy conducted a vehicle stop for traffic infractions on U.S. Hwy 75 near 150th on a Dodge Charger, according to Sheriff Tim Morse.

The Deputy arrested the driver, Destiny Marie Hibbs, 31, of Holton.

  Hibbs was booked into the Jackson County Jail on requested charges of&nbsp; possession of cocaine, possession of a hallucinogenic drug and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Kansas woman caught transporting cocaine

KANSAS CITY —Investigators are working to determine the cause of a fire at a business in Kansas City.

Just before 10a.m., crews responded to a fire in the 3100 block of Wheeling Avenue in Kansas City, according to Battalion Chief Michael Hopkins. 

Crews reported smoke showing from an occupied commercial structure that is used as an automotive repair shop. &nbsp;Searches of the structure came back all clear. Occupants of the structure were able to escape prior to the arrival of fire crews. The fire was placed under control at 10:11 a.m. No injuries were reported. The building suffered significant damage. Crews have not released a damage estimate.

Significant damage after fire at KC auto repair business

KANSAS CITY —Police are investigating a homicide in Kansas City that left three dead have identified the victims as 39-year-old&nbsp;Zachary D. Hatcher; 7-year-old&nbsp;Charlotte Hatcher and 9-year-old&nbsp;Jeffery Hatcher, according to KCPD Sergeant Phil DiMartino.

Just before 10p.m., police responded to the 1000 block of NW 91st Terrace in Kansas City on a reported check the welfare call for service.

When officers arrived they began checking the exterior of the residence. They smelled smoke and could see smoke inside the home. Officers made entry into the home but had to quickly back out due to a fire inside. 

The Kansas City Fire Department simultaneously responded and were able to extinguish the fire. Upon reentering the home, police found a girl, a boy and a man with an apparent gunshot wound. Emergency medical personnel declared the girl and the man deceased at the scene. 

EMS transported the boy to a local hospital where he died a short time later, according DiMartino.

&nbsp; This is being investigated as a homicide and detectives are not looking for any suspects. Investigators and crime scene personnel are working to determine what led up to the incident.&nbsp; &nbsp;

Police ID man, 2 children killed at home in Kansas City

The 30-year-old son of Jolene Davis ambles out of the courtroom ahead of her.

He’s carrying a backpack containing his clothes and a plastic grocery bag with a blanket.

Her son appeared before a Jackson County Circuit Court judge and agreed his mother should be his guardian. He’s diagnosed with a bipolar disorder, uses meth and other drugs, and has been living in abandoned buildings and alleys in Kansas City for about four years.

“I would trade places with him if I could,” Davis said, standing outside the courthouse in downtown Kansas City. “I want him to have a good life but there is a lot of work still to do.”

Her son admitted using meth a few days prior to the Dec. 17 court hearing and slept on a sidewalk outside a Kansas City shelter the night before.

Being houseless is not a crime. But people who are sometimes end up charged under city ordinances for drug possession, theft or property damage.

Davis is hopeful that sweeping changes planned for<a href="https://www.kcmo.gov/city-hall/departments/municipal-court/about-municipal-court/judges" target="_blank">&nbsp;Kansas City’s Municipal Court</a>&nbsp;system can help her, her son and others with co-occurring issues — substance use and a mental health disorder.

In January, a Wellness Court will open within the Municipal Court, replacing the now separate mental health and drug courts.

The two courts had been serving the same populations, but inefficiently, said Presiding Judge Courtney A. Wachal, who will oversee the Wellness Court.

“If you’re houseless, you will probably be put in inpatient treatment,” Wachal said. “And then we will work on your houselessness issue while you’re in there. It kind of gives us, like a 30-day cushion to kind of start working on those resources.”

The mental and drug courts were part of the<a href="https://www.kcmo.gov/city-hall/departments/municipal-court/probation-and-problem-solving-courts" target="_blank">&nbsp;specialty or problem-solving courts</a>, portions of the municipal system allowing for voluntary court-supervised programming and treatment, rather than punishment for low level offenses, such as the theft charge that Davis’s son once faced.

Previously, Municipal Court staff grappled with a chicken and egg scenario. They tried to determine which was primary to jailable charges, a person’s mental health issue or their addiction.

But accurate assessments are difficult, Wachal said, until a person is stabilized and maintaining sobriety.

For example, a person charged with a municipal offense could be initially assigned to the Mental Health Court, but then test positive for fentanyl and be reassigned to the Drug Court.

Under the Wellness Court, staff and supporting agencies will be at the same table in meetings, discussing a person’s needs.

“I think it is going to shorten wait lists, put people in available beds and then just make it more transparent about what everybody is doing for the participant,” Wachal said.

Combining the courts allows for expanded use of funds from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (<a href="https://www.samhsa.gov/" target="_blank">SAMHSA</a>) for housing.

No longer will a person need a qualifying diagnosis to participate, like depression, bipolar, schizophrenia or PTSD.

“We’re trying to serve everybody,” Wachal said. “It doesn’t matter what your diagnosis is. You could come into Wellness Court.”

A Women’s Court as a track within the Wellness Court will be established in March, overseen by Judge Shayla Marshall.

It will be funded by a U.S. Department of Justice grant of $656,925 and will use trauma-informed approaches for people victimized by trafficking or sexual assault.

“People who have gone through that type of trauma don’t typically disclose right away,” Wachal said. “So it’s going to be hard for us to identify who should be in that court until we get to know them and build a trust relationship.”

A Houseless Court, potentially able to meet defendants in the community, is also anticipated.

Memos of understanding are being signed with major community partners funded by the taxpayer-supported<a href="https://jacksoncountycares.org/about/meet-our-team" target="_blank">&nbsp;Community Mental Health Fund</a>, whose board agreed to the changes last summer.

The levy funded organizations are University Health, Comprehensive Mental Health Services, ReDiscover and Swope Health.

Beacon Mental Health, serving Ray, Platte and Clay counties, will also be involved.

The new system is a “big step in the right direction,” said Bruce Eddy, executive director of the more than 40-year-old Jackson County mental health fund, which pays for case management.

Eddy praised the decision to make the programming a one-year commitment.

“If they abide by the court’s requirements, then they’ll be well-established in treatment and it’s the judge’s role to look at dropping the charges,” he said.

The first full team meeting will be January 9, bringing together more than 30 organizations that will likely be involved.

Josh Henges,<a href="https://www.kcmo.gov/Home/Components/News/News/1802/231?arch=1" target="_blank">&nbsp;Kansas City’s Houseless Prevention Coordinator</a>, called the changes transformative.

“When the court system becomes a conduit for support, whether it’s mental health care, substance use treatment, or housing assistance, it’s one of the most powerful tools a community can have,” he said.

The term wellness court can be found in other cities, but those programs tend to address mental health alone, or are tribal courts.

Kansas City’s approach will uniquely focus on co-occurring issues.

About 21.5 million U.S. adults have a co-occurring mental health and substance use disorder, according to SAMHSA’s 2022 National Survey on Drug Use and Health.

Researchers estimate that about half of the people who experience a substance use disorder will also have a mental health disorder, and vice versa, according to an executive summary for the Wellness and Women’s courts.

Yet only about 10% of people with co-occurring disorders receive treatment for both conditions.

And women with co-occurring disorders are almost 20 times more likely to be arrested each year than women without a mental health or substance use disorder, the summary said.

Carly Mitchell moderated a November panel session where Wachal and two other judges discussed the upcoming changes during Kansas City’s Urban Summit.

As a clinical mental health counselor, she’s hopeful, but mindful that African Americans often aren’t treated equally in health or legal systems.

“We are a population that is either overdiagnosed or underdiagnosed, and it’s very stigmatized,” she said.

Often, Mitchell said, Black people are recognized as having a drug problem. But the underlying mental health issue goes undiagnosed and isn’t treated.

“A lot of people use (drugs) to cope,” she said.

The Wellness Court seeks to be mindful of such disparities.

It will have two tiers, as a way of being more responsive and flexible to individual needs.

Electives to help solidify health lifestyles will also be offered, a bit like what is required&nbsp;for college completion. Participants can attend church, go to the gym, do yoga, take a meditation course or a smoking cessation class to complete an elective.

Doug Langner, executive director of<a href="https://www.hopefaith.org/about-1" target="_blank">&nbsp;Hope Faith</a>, a Kansas City shelter for homeless and impoverished people, said many people can and do stabilize their lives, with a bit of assistance.

He sees the court changes as a positive step.

“Oftentimes, people self-medicate through substance abuse, especially the longer they’re on the streets,” Langner said.

Davis’s son knows Hope Faith well. He planned to spend the night there the day he left court.

Hope Faith is just one of many organizations listed on the spreadsheet Davis maintains, chronicling her son’s life during the last decade.&nbsp;

”I think the drugs have kind of just been like a pacifier for him,” she said. “It’s like, this is how I’m going to cope with whatever’s going on inside of my mind and my life.”

The timeline of his descent into substance abuse is a heart wrenching illustration of the many shelters, sober living spaces and social service agencies that have touched his life.

His mother also notes the “bad company” that he sometimes meets, people who urged him to quit his fast food and other jobs, give him drugs, and those who threaten him with violence.

After the guardianship court hearing she explained the new approaches underway for the Municipal Court system to her son, stressing that Wellness Court is designed for people like him.

“You could be happier if you are not in this lifestyle,” she told him. “This is just no way to live. Mom’s going to help you.”

He’s diagnosed with a bipolar disorder, uses meth and other drugs, and has been living in abandoned buildings and alleys in Kansas City for about four years.“I would trade places with him if I could,” Davis said, standing outside the courthouse in downtown Kansas City. “I want him to have a good life but there is a lot of work still to do.”Her son admitted using meth a few days prior to the Dec. 17 court hearing and slept on a sidewalk outside a Kansas City shelter the night before.Being houseless is not a crime. But people who are sometimes end up charged under city ordinances for drug possession, theft or property damage.Davis is hopeful that sweeping changes planned for<a href="https://www.kcmo.gov/city-hall/departments/municipal-court/about-municipal-court/judges" target="_blank">&nbsp;Kansas City’s Municipal Court</a>&nbsp;system can help her, her son and others with co-occurring issues — substance use and a mental health disorder.In January, a Wellness Court will open within the Municipal Court, replacing the now separate mental health and drug courts.The two courts had been serving the same populations, but inefficiently, said Presiding Judge Courtney A. Wachal, who will oversee the Wellness Court.“If you’re houseless, you will probably be put in inpatient treatment,” Wachal said. “And then we will work on your houselessness issue while you’re in there. It kind of gives us, like a 30-day cushion to kind of start working on those resources.”The mental and drug courts were part of the<a href="https://www.kcmo.gov/city-hall/departments/municipal-court/probation-and-problem-solving-courts" target="_blank">&nbsp;specialty or problem-solving courts</a>, portions of the municipal system allowing for voluntary court-supervised programming and treatment, rather than punishment for low level offenses, such as the theft charge that Davis’s son once faced.Previously, Municipal Court staff grappled with a chicken and egg scenario. They tried to determine which was primary to jailable charges, a person’s mental health issue or their addiction.But accurate assessments are difficult, Wachal said, until a person is stabilized and maintaining sobriety.For example, a person charged with a municipal offense could be initially assigned to the Mental Health Court, but then test positive for fentanyl and be reassigned to the Drug Court.Under the Wellness Court, staff and supporting agencies will be at the same table in meetings, discussing a person’s needs.“I think it is going to shorten wait lists, put people in available beds and then just make it more transparent about what everybody is doing for the participant,” Wachal said.Combining the courts allows for expanded use of funds from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (<a href="https://www.samhsa.gov/" target="_blank">SAMHSA</a>) for housing.No longer will a person need a qualifying diagnosis to participate, like depression, bipolar, schizophrenia or PTSD.“We’re trying to serve everybody,” Wachal said. “It doesn’t matter what your diagnosis is. You could come into Wellness Court.”A Women’s Court as a track within the Wellness Court will be established in March, overseen by Judge Shayla Marshall.It will be funded by a U.S. Department of Justice grant of $656,925 and will use trauma-informed approaches for people victimized by trafficking or sexual assault.“People who have gone through that type of trauma don’t typically disclose right away,” Wachal said. “So it’s going to be hard for us to identify who should be in that court until we get to know them and build a trust relationship.”A Houseless Court, potentially able to meet defendants in the community, is also anticipated.Memos of understanding are being signed with major community partners funded by the taxpayer-supported<a href="https://jacksoncountycares.org/about/meet-our-team" target="_blank">&nbsp;Community Mental Health Fund</a>, whose board agreed to the changes last summer.The levy funded organizations are University Health, Comprehensive Mental Health Services, ReDiscover and Swope Health.Beacon Mental Health, serving Ray, Platte and Clay counties, will also be involved.The new system is a “big step in the right direction,” said Bruce Eddy, executive director of the more than 40-year-old Jackson County mental health fund, which pays for case management.Eddy praised the decision to make the programming a one-year commitment.“If they abide by the court’s requirements, then they’ll be well-established in treatment and it’s the judge’s role to look at dropping the charges,” he said.The first full team meeting will be January 9, bringing together more than 30 organizations that will likely be involved.Josh Henges,<a href="https://www.kcmo.gov/Home/Components/News/News/1802/231?arch=1" target="_blank">&nbsp;Kansas City’s Houseless Prevention Coordinator</a>, called the changes transformative.“When the court system becomes a conduit for support, whether it’s mental health care, substance use treatment, or housing assistance, it’s one of the most powerful tools a community can have,” he said.The term wellness court can be found in other cities, but those programs tend to address mental health alone, or are tribal courts.Kansas City’s approach will uniquely focus on co-occurring issues.About 21.5 million U.S. adults have a co-occurring mental health and substance use disorder, according to SAMHSA’s 2022 National Survey on Drug Use and Health.Researchers estimate that about half of the people who experience a substance use disorder will also have a mental health disorder, and vice versa, according to an executive summary for the Wellness and Women’s courts.Yet only about 10% of people with co-occurring disorders receive treatment for both conditions.And women with co-occurring disorders are almost 20 times more likely to be arrested each year than women without a mental health or substance use disorder, the summary said.Carly Mitchell moderated a November panel session where Wachal and two other judges discussed the upcoming changes during Kansas City’s Urban Summit.As a clinical mental health counselor, she’s hopeful, but mindful that African Americans often aren’t treated equally in health or legal systems.“We are a population that is either overdiagnosed or underdiagnosed, and it’s very stigmatized,” she said.Often, Mitchell said, Black people are recognized as having a drug problem. But the underlying mental health issue goes undiagnosed and isn’t treated.“A lot of people use (drugs) to cope,” she said.The Wellness Court seeks to be mindful of such disparities.It will have two tiers, as a way of being more responsive and flexible to individual needs.Electives to help solidify health lifestyles will also be offered, a bit like what is required&nbsp;for college completion. Participants can attend church, go to the gym, do yoga, take a meditation course or a smoking cessation class to complete an elective.Doug Langner, executive director of<a href="https://www.hopefaith.org/about-1" target="_blank">&nbsp;Hope Faith</a>, a Kansas City shelter for homeless and impoverished people, said many people can and do stabilize their lives, with a bit of assistance.He sees the court changes as a positive step.“Oftentimes, people self-medicate through substance abuse, especially the longer they’re on the streets,” Langner said.Davis’s son knows Hope Faith well. He planned to spend the night there the day he left court.Hope Faith is just one of many organizations listed on the spreadsheet Davis maintains, chronicling her son’s life during the last decade.&nbsp;”I think the drugs have kind of just been like a pacifier for him,” she said. “It’s like, this is how I’m going to cope with whatever’s going on inside of my mind and my life.”The timeline of his descent into substance abuse is a heart wrenching illustration of the many shelters, sober living spaces and social service agencies that have touched his life.His mother also notes the “bad company” that he sometimes meets, people who urged him to quit his fast food and other jobs, give him drugs, and those who threaten him with violence.After the guardianship court hearing she explained the new approaches underway for the Municipal Court system to her son, stressing that Wellness Court is designed for people like him.“You could be happier if you are not in this lifestyle,” she told him. “This is just no way to live. Mom’s going to help you.”

Kansas City’s new Wellness Court to help those with mental health disorders, addiction

REPUBLIC COUNTY – A Kansas father accused in the death of his 3-month old daughter is now in a jail in Kansas. 

Just before 7p.m. Thursday, 23-year-old William McLaughlin&nbsp; of Belleville was booked into the Republic County Jail, according to online jail records.

On Thursday morning McLaughlin was arrested in Nebraska on a KBI warrant for first-degree murder and felony abuse of a child. The charges are connected to the death of McLaughlin’s three-month-old daughter.

On Christmas Day, the infant was initially brought to the Republic County hospital. She had suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead in an Omaha hospital on Dec. 29.

Following&nbsp;the arrest, McLaughlin was booked into the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office Jail in Nebraska. The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office assisted in the arrest.&nbsp; Republic County authorities have not set the date for McLaughlin's first court appearance.

REPUBLIC COUNTY –&nbsp;The Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI) is investigating a suspected&nbsp;child abuse case in Belleville. &nbsp;

On Thursday morning, the&nbsp;Belleville Police Department&nbsp;contacted the&nbsp;KBI to investigate after an unresponsive&nbsp;three-month-old&nbsp;infant was transported from the Republic County hospital to a hospital in Omaha, Nebraska.

The child’s parents brought her to the Republic County hospital on Dec. 25, and hospital staff later contacted the Belleville Police Department.

A pediatrician at the Omaha hospital indicated the child has no brain activity due to severe injuries she had sustained. Late Thursday afternoon, KBI reported the infant remains on life support.

On Dec. 28 around noon, Brian W. Black, 40, was found dead outside of his residence in Arkansas City, according to a media release from the KBI.

Black died from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. Deputies contacted the coroner who pronounced him deceased at the scene.

Black had been released on bond after he was charged with rape and other crimes committed against a 16-year old teen.

Just before 10:30a.m December 11, special agents with the Kansas Bureau of Investigation arrested Brian W. Black, 40, without incident at his residence in Arkansas City, according to a media release from the KBI.

Black was arrested on a warrant on requested charges that include three counts of rape, three counts of aggravated sexual battery, two counts of exploitation of a child, two counts of lewd and lascivious behavior, abuse of a child, and battery.

In September 2023, the Cowley County Sheriff’s Office requested KBI assistance with a sexual assault investigation involving a 16-year-old girl who had reported that Black had raped her.

KBI: Kansas man charged with sex crimes is dead

WASHINGTON — President-elect Donald Trump is scheduled to be sentenced in New York on 34 felony convictions on Jan. 10, just days ahead of his presidential inauguration, according to an order issued Friday by New York Justice Juan Merchan.

Merchan&nbsp;<a href="https://www.nycourts.gov/LegacyPDFs/press/PDFs/People%20v.%20DJT%20Clayton%20Decision.pdf" target="_blank">wrote</a>&nbsp;he won’t seek incarceration for Trump but rather an “unconditional discharge” that would leave Trump with a criminal record in New York but avoids any serious penalties. A Trump spokesperson on Friday indicated the president-elect would fight the sentencing.

Trump, who is set to be sworn in as the 47th president on Jan. 20, has all but seen his multiple criminal cases go quiet after winning the 2024 presidential election in November.

Trump made history in May as the first former president to become a convicted felon after a jury found him&nbsp;<a href="https://www.newsfromthestates.com/article/trump-found-guilty-34-felony-counts-ny-hush-money-trial-10" target="_blank">guilty</a>&nbsp;of falsifying business records to hide a hush-money scheme involving his personal lawyer Michael Cohen and adult film actress Stormy Daniels ahead of the 2016 presidential election.

Trump’s New York sentencing date was delayed multiple times, including shortly after Trump’s win on Nov. 5 prompted Merchan to&nbsp;<a href="https://newjerseymonitor.com/2024/11/12/dc/trump-legal-case-in-new-york-on-hold-as-prosecution-studies-effect-of-presidential-win/" target="_blank">pause and examine</a>&nbsp;moving forward with sentencing a president-elect.

Trump’s attorneys also held up their client’s sentencing as they fought evidence presented in the case after the U.S. Supreme Court&nbsp;<a href="https://www.newsfromthestates.com/article/presidential-immunity-covers-some-official-acts-supreme-court-rules-trump-case" target="_blank">ruled</a>&nbsp;in July that former presidents are shielded from criminal prosecution for official acts.

Merchan ultimately&nbsp;<a href="https://www.nycourts.gov/LegacyPDFs/press/PDFs/CPL330.30Dec.pdf" target="_blank">ruled</a>&nbsp;on Dec. 16 that the majority of Trump’s case “related entirely to unofficial conduct entitled to no immunity protection.”

In his Friday order, Merchan said the complex situation involving Trump likely will never be seen again.

“Finding no legal impediment to sentencing and recognizing that Presidential immunity will likely attach once Defendant takes his Oath of Office, it is incumbent upon this Court to set this matter down for the imposition of sentence prior to January 20, 2025,” Merchan wrote, adding that all further avenues have been exhausted “in what is an unprecedented, and likely never to be repeated legal scenario.”

“This Court must sentence Defendant within a reasonable time following verdict; and Defendant must be permitted to avail himself of every available appeal, a path he has made clear he intends to pursue but which only becomes fully available upon sentencing,” Merchan continued.

Merchan has given Trump the option to appear in person or virtually for the sentencing.

Merchan’s order comes as the U.S. Department of Justice special counsel Jack Smith, citing a longstanding protocol of not prosecuting sitting presidents,&nbsp;<a href="https://newjerseymonitor.com/2024/11/25/dc/doj-special-counsel-smith-drops-federal-criminal-cases-against-trump/" target="_blank">closed</a>&nbsp;Trump’s two federal cases — one alleging election interference in the 2020 presidential election, and the other focused on classified documents illegally stashed at Trump’s Florida resort after his first presidency.

Steven Cheung, Trump communications director, issued a statement Friday criticizing Merchan as “deeply conflicted” and alleging the judge is in “direct violation of the Supreme Court’s Immunity decision and other longstanding jurisprudence.”

“This lawless case should have never been brought and the Constitution demands that it be immediately dismissed,” Cheung continued. “President Trump must be allowed to continue the Presidential Transition process and to execute the vital duties of the presidency, unobstructed by the remains of this or any remnants of the Witch Hunts. There should be no sentencing, and President Trump will continue fighting against these hoaxes until they are all dead.”

HARVEY COUNTY—On Friday, Edward L. Altum, age 71 of Newton, was found guilty of 2nd Degree Intentional Homicide and Aggravated Battery in the killing of his wife Peggy S. Altum in December of 2023.

The judge made the ruling following Altum's plea of no contest to the charges. 

In December of 2023, police responded to a report of a shooting in the 2000 block of Terrace Drive in Newton, according to a media release from from police.

A man at the house identified as Edward Altum reported his 74-year-old wife had been shot and refused to answer any further questions.

EMS transported the victim to Wesley Medical Center in Wichita where she later died. Police arrested&nbsp; Altum and recovered a gun at the scene, according to police.

&nbsp;This case is scheduled to be sentenced by Judge Llamas on March 17.

Judge: Kansas man guilty of wife's murder

WASHINGTON — U.S. House Republicans on Friday elected Louisiana Rep. Mike Johnson as their speaker for the 119th Congress, following weeks of speculation about whether the GOP would begin another protracted, public dispute over leadership.

The drama-filled vote ensures that Johnson, who was first elected speaker in October 2023, will hold the gavel as Republicans embark on an ambitious legislative agenda that includes overhauling the country’s immigration system and the tax code.

Johnson won the votes of 218 Republicans, while 215 Democrats voted for New York Rep. Hakeem Jeffries.

Kentucky Rep. Thomas Massie, South Carolina Rep. Ralph Norman and Texas Rep. Keith Self all originally voted for other members for speaker. But after several conversations, on and off the floor, Norman and Self switched their votes to Johnson.

The November elections handed the GOP&nbsp;<a href="https://www.newsfromthestates.com/article/republicans-clinch-218-seats-us-house-scoring-trifecta-control-washington" target="_blank">unified control</a>&nbsp;of government, which will formally begin on Jan. 20 when President-elect Donald Trump takes the oath of office. Trump endorsed Johnson’s bid for speaker.

TOPEKA –&nbsp;While the risk to the general public still remains very low, the Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) is reminding Kansans to practice caution around wild birds and backyard poultry amid increasing reports of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) A (H5N1) virus both nationally and within Kansas, according to a media release from the KDHE.

HPAI is primarily an infection of wild birds; however, in the ongoing outbreak beginning in early 2022, numerous animal species have been infected including domestic poultry, dairy cattle, wild carnivores like skunks and raccoons, and domestic cats. The virus is spread by migratory waterfowl, primarily ducks and geese.

“The public health risk of HPAI remains low,”&nbsp;KDHE Chief Medical Officer Dr. Dereck Totten said.&nbsp;“While there has been no person-to-person spread, KDHE is monitoring the situation carefully. We are working with people who have had flocks test positive and encourage the public to avoid contact with sick birds.”

Fall migration of wild birds increased in November and December, resulting in additional exposure to HPAI and thus an increase in cases in domestic poultry in Kansas. Since Dec. 3, the Kansas Department of Agriculture (KDA) has identified HPAI in six non-commercial backyard flocks and two commercial flocks.

Since this virus can infect humans who come in close contact with sick or dead birds and other infected animals, KDHE, in coordination with local health departments, monitors all exposed individuals for symptoms of influenza-like illness. While no human cases have been identified in Kansas, 66 cases of HPAI have been confirmed in humans in the United States in 2024. Those cases are nearly all from exposure to infected poultry or dairy cows, and no known human-to-human spread has occurred.

KDHE provides update on bird flu risk in Kansas

KANSAS CITY—Law enforcement are investigating a double-fatal shooting in Kansas City.

Just after 7:30p.m. Thursday patrol officers were dispatched to the 8700 block of Blue Ridge in Kansas City on a reported shooting, according to KCPD&nbsp; Sergeant Phil DiMartino.&nbsp; 

The call indicated two individuals were possibly shot in a parking lot. Upon arrival the officers located two adult male victims suffering from gunshot wounds. 

Emergency medical personnel responded and pronounced both victims deceased. This is being investigated as a homicide. Preliminary investigation revealed there was an interaction in the parking lot that led to the victims being shot.

RILEY COUNTY—Law enforcement are investigating a burglary and arson fire in Riley County.

Just before 5p.m. Tuesday, officers filed a report of burglary and aggravated arson in the 700 block of Humboldt Street, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

Officers report an unknown subject entered the apartment and lit the carpet on fire. Total estimated loss is unknown at this time.

Police listed a 70-year-old woman, 44-year-old woman, 26-year-old man, 47-year old woman, 28-year-old woman, 37-year-old man, 38-year-old man, 25-year-old man and a 17-year old girl as victims.

Police: Kansas burglary suspect set carpet on fire

KANSAS CITY —Police are investigating a homicide in Kansas City that left three dead.

Just before 10p.m., police responded to the 1000 block of NW 91st Terrace in Kansas City on a reported check the welfare call for service, according to KCPD&nbsp;Sergeant Phil DiMartino.

&nbsp; This is being investigated as a homicide and detectives are not looking for any suspects. Investigators and crime scene personnel are working to determine what led up to the incident.&nbsp; &nbsp;Police released no additional details.

They smelled smoke and could see smoke inside the home. Officers made entry into the home but had to quickly back out due to a fire inside. The Kansas City Fire Department simultaneously responded and were able to extinguish the fire. Upon reentering the home, police found a girl, a boy and a man with an apparent gunshot wound. Emergency medical personnel declared the girl and the man deceased at the scene. EMS transported the boy to a local hospital where he died a short time later, according DiMartino.&nbsp; This is being investigated as a homicide and detectives are not looking for any suspects. Investigators and crime scene personnel are working to determine what led up to the incident.&nbsp; &nbsp;Police released no additional details.

Trump shows off new hat during golf with U.S. Senator from Missouri

KANSAS CITY —Law enforcement investigating the fatal street racing crash on Monday in Kansas City have identified the victims as 91-year-old Verne Zugenbuhler and 72-year-old Diane Zugenbuhler, according to KCPD Sergeant Phil DiMartino.

Just before 10:30a.m. Monday, a black Chrysler 300 and a silver Dodge Charger were street racing southbound on Wornall from 99th Street at a high rate of speed, according to Sgt. DiMartino.

At the same time, a silver Honda HRV was making a left turn onto Carondolet from Wornall.

The Chrysler struck the Honda. The driver and passenger, Diane Zugenbuhler and Vern Zugenbuhler, in the Honda were both pronounced dead at the scene. 

The driver of the Chrysler was transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. This was fatality # 96 and #97 for 2024 compared to #101 in 2023 according to DiMartino.&nbsp;&nbsp;
