KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Kevin Gausman pitched six scoreless innings, Vlad Guerrero Jr. and Cavan Biggio hit home runs and the Toronto Blue Jays won their third straight game, 6-3, over the Kansas City Royals to take the four-game series. 

Gausman gave up just four hits to the struggling Royals, striking out seven and walking two. Kansas City did not have a runner reach second base until the sixth inning. 

The Royals scored three runs in the eighth to avoid their fourth shutout of the season. Adam Cimber earned his first save. Jordan Lyles took the loss. He allowed five runs on eight hits in 5 2/3 innings.

The Royals next take on the Giants Friday afternoon with first pitch at 3:35. Coverage begins at 3:00 on KFEQ (680, 95.3) in St. Joseph.

Toronto ends 3-game skid in Whit Merrifield's return to KC

Senior and basketball standout Mikey Thomas left his mark on Lafayette history during his high school career, helping the Irish to three district titles and a third place finish at state this past March.

Now, Thomas hopes to leave his mark in the college game.

Thomas signed his letter of intent Tuesday to play at North Central Missouri College in Trenton. Thomas announced his verbal commitment to NCMC on March 28th.

He says it’s a special opportunity to continue his athletic and academic career.

"It means everything," Thomas said to KQTV. "It means I can continue playing basketball for two more years, which is a blessing. I mean, if I do good enough there, I'll get to play for another two years. It's a good opportunity for me. To get a free education is something not everyone gets to do. So, it's a great opportunity."

Thomas says NCMC's loyalty and belief in him were deciding factors in his decision.

"I think they were the first ones to notice me and offer me," he said. "It was a long time ago. I knew they saw something in me and they believed in me."

Thomas helped guide Lafayette to a 23-8 record this past season. Lafayette beat Father Tolton 78-57 in the Class 4 third place game in Springfield back on March 17th. Thomas had 12 points, nine assists, four steals and a blocked shot in that game.

Thomas earned all-MEC, all-district and all-city honors for his efforts this season.

Track and field Numerous area schools competed in the East Buchanan Invitational. The East Buchanan boys took home the team title with 127 points. Lafayette’s Honor Mannings took gold in the 100 and 300 meter hurdles. St. Joseph Christian’s Charlee Stanley took first in the girls' 400 meter dash. Benton’s Kruz Bigham won the boys’ 800 meter run. In the boys’ 1600 meter run, East Buchanan’s Aidan Hensley crossed the line first. Hensley also won the 3200 meter run.

Staying on the boys’ side, Benton took first in the boys’ 4x100 meter relay. The East Buchanan boys won the 4x800 meter relay. In field events, East Buchanan’s Trey Johnson won the long jump. St. Joseph Christian’s Jaci Jorgenson won girls’ triple jump, while East Buchanan’s Trevor Klein won boys’ triple jump.

Chase Meers picked up another gold medal for East Buchanan in boys’ shot put. Savannah’s Rhyan Shrick took first in girls’ javelin, while Mid-Buchanan’s Jackson Wahlgren took first in boys’ javelin.

Singer, Lopez lead Royals past Blue Jays for first win of 2023 season

North Platte overcame a frustrating start offensively and hung six runs in the sixth inning to prevail 8-5 over St. Joseph Christian at Victory Field in St. Joseph Monday.

The Panthers (2-3) were held without a hit through the first three innings, as Christian's starting pitcher Nick Orscheln struck out six of his first nine batters faced.

Christian (4-2) got on the board first in the bottom of the first inning, thanks to an RBI single from Blake Ray.

North Platte had the answer in the top of the fourth, leading off that frame with three straight hits, including an RBI single from Colton Kirkham and an RBI double from Chance Garber.

"It felt really good," Garber said. "Coming off of a bad game the last game (against Lawson) and then coming out here and trying to perform and do something for our team is pretty good. We played a hell of a game today."&nbsp;

Trailing 2-1 going to the bottom of the fifth, Christian retook the lead at 4-2, scoring three runs on three hits and two errors in the fifth.

Undaunted, the Panthers made their mark in the sixth, leading off that frame with a single, three straight walks, another single and then a hit batter.

The second single in that sequence was a two-run RBI blast to right field by Ben Jaycox, giving North Platte the lead at 5-4. Subsequent RBIs by Wesley Meadows, Kaden Mullendore and Kirkham put the Panthers up 8-4 after an inning that lasted for 12 at-bats.

"I think at the beginning, we just started off slow," Mullendore said. "Hitting, and making no contact. We were slow getting there, but we found it eventually and got some runs in."

Christian got one run back in the sixth, but Mullendore retired the Lions in four at-bats in the bottom of the seventh to close it out.

Mullendore got the win on the mound, throwing the final 3.2 innings in relief. He struck out five batters and walked only three, while allowing five hits and three earned runs.

Offensively, Garber went 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI. Kirkham went 2-for-4 with a run scored and two RBIs.

"Our kids came through when we needed them to," North Platte head coach Daniel Atkinson said. "So, I'm very proud of them."

Orscheln started on the mound for Christian and struck out nine in four innings. Clabaugh took the loss in middle relief, allowing five runs in the sixth inning.

Sophomore Logan Hubble led the Lions with three runs scored. Johnston Stewart and Orscheln each had a pair of hits, as did Blake Ray.

Christian's pitching staff totaled 12 strikeouts, but the Lions also stranded 10 baserunners offensively.

For North Platte, Monday's win is an early confidence boost. It marks the Panthers' first road win of the season, and it puts them back in the right column after a 2-0 loss at East Buchanan and then a 4-3, eight-inning loss to Lawson at home last week.

"We don't always create the best situation by a mistake here or there," Atkinson pointed out, "but we always compete. I'm trying to keep our kids on that course, because we can win a lot of ballgames by just staying the course and doing what we do."

North Platte heads to University Academy Charter in Kansas City Tuesday. St. Joseph Christian doesn't play again until next Tuesday at East Buchanan.

North Platte overcomes early deficit, Panthers score win at St. Joseph Christian

Lafayette senior and basketball standout Jazlyn King signed her letter of intent Monday to continue her basketball career at Iowa Lakes Community College in Estherville, Iowa.

King had been verbally committed to the Lakers since February 10. She had been a multi-year starter for Lafayette, and has been the leading scorer for the Irish the past couple of seasons.

She helped guide Lafayette to a 10-18 finish this past season under first-year head coach Craig Curtis.

King’s best season would have been her junior year, when Lafayette went 16-12 and beat Savannah in the first round of districts in the 2021-22 campaign.

King was also a multi-year starter for Lafayette in volleyball, playing outside hitter, defensive specialist and libero during her career.

🏀 Gradey Dick to leave Kansas for NBA draft after 1 season

The Kansas City Chiefs have extended their agreement with Missouri Western State University to make St. Joseph the home of Chiefs Training Camp&nbsp;through the 2024 season.

“We are thrilled to announce that we will return to Missouri Western State University and the St. Joseph community for another two years,” Chiefs President Mark Donovan said. “Missouri Western and St. Joseph have warmly hosted our team and fans for the past 13 years – a welcome start to the NFL season.

Chiefs announce extension of training camp in St. Joseph through 2024 season

FAUCETT - The East Buchanan baseball team put up six runs in the sixth inning in an otherwise defensive battle against rival Mid-Buchanan, and the Bulldogs managed a 6-2 win in Faucett on a windy and cloudy Thursday afternoon.

After being held to just one hit through the first five innings, East Buchanan (6-0) loaded the bases with two walks and a hit batter to start off the sixth. Max Henry walked in the game's first run to give the Bulldogs their first run and lead.

With the bases still loaded and nobody out, and facing the Mid Buchanan bullpen, East Buchanan kept the pressure on. Austin Cilke had an RBI single, and Blake Bryor walked in another run to make it 3-0.

Henry later came around to score on an error in centerfield and an RBI fielders' choice by Ty Ingle made it 6-0 East Buchanan by the middle of the sixth inning.

"I think the confidence continued to build," East Buchanan coach Dave Elms said. "I think once we got runners on base and started putting a little bit of pressure on them, they had to be a bit finer with their pitches, and I think our hitters took advantage of those times."

On the hill, junior starter Gage Busby got the win for East Buchanan, pitching 6.1 innings and striking out 10 batters in a stellar effort.

"I just pitched to contact most of the time," Busby said. "Tried to let my fielders make plays for the most part and just pitch, and stuff was working today."

Busby held the Dragons (3-1) scoreless through five innings, but Mid-Buchanan got on the board in the bottom of the sixth after drawing three walks and stealing five bases in the frame.

Derek Sprague scored Mid-Buchanan's first run on a perfectly timed suicide squeeze from third base. Denton Biller came around to score on an error, but the Dragons were held to just the two runs in the bottom of the sixth.

Mid-Buchanan was held to just two hits Thursday, and the Dragons stranded five base runners. Cadyn Parrott took the loss on the mound, pitching only the sixth inning.

Biller made the start on the mound for Mid-Buchanan and looked strong, but he was pulled after 2.1 innings due to pitch count. Biller struck out five batters in that time. Coltyn Angst followed with 2.2 solid innings of scoreless relief, striking out four himself.

Austin Cilke recorded the final two outs on the mound in the seventh inning for East Buchanan, who remain undefeated on the young season.

"We're putting in a lot of work at practice," Busby said. "Staying after and putting in a lot of work ourselves. Defensively, we're doing a great job out there, and making plays. Timely hits. All of it. We're just doing good."

The Bulldogs will next play at Maryville on April 3. Mid-Buchanan plays at Northland Christian on Friday at 4:30 p.m., weather permitting.

East Buchanan scores six runs in sixth inning, pick up win at Mid-Buchanan Thursday

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Pablo Lopez and four Minnesota relievers combined on a two-hitter as the Twins beat the Kansas City Royals 2-0 on a breezy opening day Thursday.

Trevor Larnach and pinch-hitter Donovan Solano each drove in a run. Lopez allowed both Kansas City hits while walking three and striking out eight in 5 1/3 innings, outpitching former Cy Young Award winner Zack Greinke.

A trio of Twins relievers easily ushered the game to Jhoan Duran, who worked around a walk in the ninth to earn the save on an overcast afternoon at Kauffman Stadium.

Greinke, who also lasted 5 1/3 innings, delivered a solid start for Kansas City to begin his 20th season in the big leagues. The 39-year-old right-hander allowed both runs on six hits and a walk while striking out four.

The Twins won despite leaving the bases loaded three times and 12 on base in all.

Salvador Perez and Kyle Isbel had the Royals’ only hits.

Even though Greinke and Lopez matched scoreless innings through the fifth, both had to wiggle out of trouble.

The Twins had a pair of singles and a walk in the first inning, but Greinke rebounded to get Nick Gordon to ground out and end the threat. The Royals’ erstwhile ace didn’t allow another hit until Christian Vazquez singled with one out in the fifth.

Lopez, who arrived in a January trade with Miami, retired the first seven batters he faced and didn’t allow a single until Perez’s shattered bat went about as far as the ball in the fourth. Lopez later loaded the bases on a double, hit batter and walk in the fifth, but the righty got MJ Melendez to ground down the first-base line into an inning-ending double play.

The Twins finally broke though in the sixth. Larnach followed Byron Buxton’s leadoff triple with a base hit, and Solano entered to face Royals reliever Amir Garrett, ripping a single up the middle to extend the lead.

Kansas City never really threatened the rest of the way.

one of the club's most popular players with the rare title.

Unlike
 football or basketball, the captain title is bestowed upon players that
 have either achieved a tremendous amount or displayed exemplary 
leadership over a lengthy period of time.

Along
 with his near-annual trips to the All-Star game, the affable catcher 
has won four Silver Slugger awards, five Gold Glove awards and was the 
MVP of the 2015 World Series, when the Royals beat the Mets for their 
second championship.

He is also among the most popular players in 
the Royals clubhouse. Perez's gregarious nature immediately puts young 
players at ease, which is a good thing for a club in the midst of a 
major youth movement, and he's always willing to sign autographs and 
take photographs for fans that show up long before the first pitch.

"Salvy
 is a Royals icon, a Kansas City icon and a baseball icon,” Royals 
general manager J.J. Picollo said. “This honor reflects not just his 
place in Royals history but just as importantly the work he puts in and 
the leadership he provides our organization.”

Hall of Fame third 
baseman George Brett and longtime star Frank White were the first Royals
 captains. They both held the title from 1989-90, when White retired, 
and Brett carried it on until his own retirement after the 1993 season.

Mike Sweeney was the last Royals captain, holding the honor from 2003 until leaving for Oakland for the 2008 season.

Aaron Judge of the Yankees was the only other MLB player with a captain title heading into this season.

⚾️ Royals make Perez fourth captain in franchise history

FAUCETT - Mid-Buchanan girls' soccer opened its home schedule on Monday with a 5-0 win over East Kansas City - the first match played on their home pitch that's now outfitted with brand new turf.

As nice as that win was, and as nice as the turf looks, the Dragons were hoping to fix a few things and be more confident in their approach on Tuesday.

The Dragons (4-0) scored four goals in the first 6.5 minutes and flat out dominated Ewing Marion Kaufmann in an 8-0 victory.

Mid-Buchanan managed 15 shots-on-goal, and kept the ball in and around Kaufmann's 18-yard box all day long.

"We were overthinking too much," junior striker Emily Parrott said of Monday's match. "It made us slip up a little bit and we were getting frustrated with ourselves. But, today we worked more as a team, and I'm proud of that."

Senior Jordan Thornton got things going immediately, scoring the game's first goal unassisted in just 20 seconds. Three minutes later, Thornton hit another short-range goal off of a pass from Taiylor Harrington.

The onslaught didn't stop there. Freshman Danika Black hit a long shot from roughly 20 yards away that went off the goalie's hands and in, making it 3-0 Mid-Buchanan with 34:28 left in the first half.

Exactly 59 seconds later, another freshman got in on the fun. Avani Kendzora poked a ball past the goal line off of a corner kick from Black.

 4-0 Dragons within the first 5:32 of the match.

"Coming in hard and scoring those first four goals in the first however many minutes really got our engines going," Parrott commented.

Mid-Buchanan was awarded seven total corner kicks in Tuesday's match. On one of those tries, Black kicked the ball into the middle of the box, where sophomore London Wilson was able to kick it hard through traffic and past the goalie's hand for a tough goal with 19:54 left until halftime. The Dragons now led 4-0.

Parrott, who assisted on a pair of goals herself, got one for her own on a long, 20-plus yard shot that sailed across the pitch and into the top of the net, putting the Dragons up 6-0 with 18:06 left until half.

Later on, the Dragons scored on another corner kick opportunity. After some jostling in the box following the kick, Parrott and junior Kaitlyn Mejia seemingly scored a goal together when the ball bounced off of each of their cleats and past the line.

Mejia was officially credited, and the Dragons went up 7-0 with 9:46 left in the first half. The Dragons had some chances to end the match via mercy rule late in the first half, but they'd do so, almost right away, in the second.

Parrott hit another fairly long shot, this one from 15 yards and straight ahead, to make it 8-0 and end the match in mercy rule with still 38:05 on the clock in the second half.

In all, six Dragons scored, and Mid-Buchanan held Marion Kaufmann without a single shot-on-goal. Heck, the Dragons had just one goal kick through the entire match.

"Today, we tried to focus on playing simple," head coach Danielle Burkart-Beers said. "Making smart passes and when we can do that, great things can happen and that's really what our focus was on today."

Mid-Buchanan, who has outscored their opposition so far this season a combined 20-1, are off to a 4-0 start - fresh off of their Final Four appearance last year.

"Coming out with four wins in a row is really nice to have," Parrott said, "especially since we gained so many freshmen this year and we lost so many seniors. So, I think they've filled the shoes of the seniors so far."

The Dragons have strength in numbers. While they graduated seven seniors from last year's squad, there are 16 new freshmen on varsity and JV combined.

Combine that with a corps of 8-9 returners who have significant varsity minutes under their belt, that's a decent formula for success.

In just the third season of this program's existence, Burkart-Beers is seeing continued growth and evolution within a Mid-Buchanan team that's no longer full of novice players.

"It's exciting to see them and hear them talking at school, 'I'm playing soccer and I'm doing this,'" Burkart-Beers said. "So, just growing the sport and seeing they're willing to come out and just give it a shot. That means we're doing something right out here. We're providing an environment that's fun and they want to be out here."

Mid-Buchanan will now head to St. Louis this weekend to face defending Class 3 state champion MICDS on Friday. They'll then face Ursuline on Saturday - a team that finished first in 2021 and fourth in Class 3 just last year.

"We have some really great competition coming up this weekend," Burkart-Beers noted. "We're excited to test ourselves and see where we're at with that. So, continuous growth throughout the year and I think it's going to come together."

Mid-Buchanan strikes early, often in shutout win over Marion Kaufmann Tuesday

SAVANNAH - Savannah scored 12 runs in the first two innings and took advantage of 13 free passes in a 15-4, run rule victory over the Lafayette Fighting Irish at Savannah High School Tuesday.

The Savages (4-3) went up 4-0 at the end of the first inning after drawing three straight walks to start the game. RBI singles by Ashton Kincaid, Landon Noland, Zayden Snapp and Bryce Stanley all in a row brought in the first four runs.

Lafayette (2-2) put up a run in the bottom of the first to get on the board, but Savannah answered with eight total runs in the bottom of the second.

Three Savages were hit by a pitch in the bottom of the second, and six total hits in that frame essentially put the game out of reach early.

A pair of two-run RBI doubles by&nbsp;Sutton Snipes and Truman Bodenhausen were the highlight moments in the second.

By the end of the second inning, every Savannah player in the lineup came around to score a run, and the Savages led 12-1 entering the third.

"Our approach at the plate was good," said junior Wyatt Jackson, who led Savannah with four runs scored. "As a team, our goal is to be patient and make the pitcher pitch to us, and that's what we did. So, good win."

Savannah added three more runs for good measure in the fourth inning. They scored those three runs without ever notching a hit. Three hit batters, two walks and a sac fly by Snapp made it a 15-4 ballgame.

Lafayette scored one run in the second, third, fourth and fifth innings, but the Irish were never able to snap back after Savannah's onslaught in the second.

Freshman Carter Bruce led the Irish with two runs scored. Junior Drake Losson doubled and scored. Junior Brendon Bushong took the loss on the hill for Lafayette.

Snapp went 2-for-4 with a team-best three RBIs for Savannah. Bodenhausen scored three runs and drove in two more.

In the end, every Savage in the starting lineup got a hit and scored a run. Savannah also drew six walks and were hit by a pitch seven times.

"Yeah, we returned a few seniors and they're a big role in our team this year," Snapp said. "A few returning starters who are juniors now, too. We just have to keep working and we'll be fine."

On the bump, senior Ethan Dudeck pitched the full game, allowing just five hits and three earned runs. He struck out three, walked three and hit a pair of batters as well.

"I thought Ethan did a great job," Savannah coach Erich Bodenhausen said. "Filling up the zone and throwing strikes. We talked after the game, I felt like he was ahead (in the count) a lot and then we kind of nibbled. So, I'd like for him to be a bit more aggressive and go after, but other than that, he did a great job for us."

With a varsity team made up of 15 upperclassmen, including six seniors and multiple returning starters from last year, Savannah has made a splash early this season, especially on offense.

Through their first seven games, Savannah is averaging 10 runs per contest. Tuesday marked the fourth time already this season that the Savages have put up double digits in the scoring column.

"It's only going to get better as the temperature warms up," Bodenhausen said. "Hopefully, we'll keep driving the ball and improve in a few other areas, pitching and defense and we can be a pretty good team."

Savannah heads to Cameron Thursday. Lafayette is home to Maryville that same day.

Dudeck pitches full game, offense shines in Savannah's big win over Lafayette

Leblond senior and All State guard Tatum Studer saw much success in her time with the Golden Eagles, and will now look ahead to her college career. &nbsp;

Studer signed her national letter of intent on Friday afternoon to continue playing basketball as a member of the University of Saint Mary Spires &nbsp;

Studer says she's excited to sign with the Spires.&nbsp;

"It's been exciting and it's been a really long and tiring journey," Studer tells reporters. "But, just to say I have it done is everything." &nbsp;

While it was a long and tiring process, Studer says it was the coaching staff that drew her to Saint Mary's.&nbsp;

"It feels like home and after that state game I knew I wasn't ready to give up basketball and so I really wanted to further my athletic journey and Saint Mary's was the place to do it," Studer says. &nbsp;

Leblond Head Coach Jackie Steltenpohl says she's excited to see Studer get this opportunity. &nbsp;

"I'm just so proud of how hard Tatum's worked with basketball and even just all her sports she's definitely a great athlete," Steltenpohl says. "I think just having her at Leblond has changed our program tremendously."&nbsp;

"Just really happy to see that she was able to pick basketball as her sport to move on to college. "&nbsp;

Studer's career at Leblond was filled with milestones on and off the court.&nbsp; She scored 1,206 career points, earning All MEC Conference first team honors, was a Class 2 District 16 All District player and Co-Player of the year, and was also Class 2 first team all-state.&nbsp; She was also named the 2023 St. Joseph Female Scholar Athlete of the Year. &nbsp;

Studer was also a key contributor to big 2023 basketball season for the Golden Eagles.&nbsp; Leblond made the Final Four for the first time since 1984, were state runners up, and finished the season 28-4. &nbsp;

Steltenpohl says it's hard to say just one thing that Leblond will miss from having Studer on the court. &nbsp;

"Her fire, her energy, there's always just that on the court and off the court even," Steltenpohl says. "So, just how hard she works, her mentality towards the game, her IQ is just so high so I think that helped her teammates grow in their IQs as well." &nbsp;

"But there's just too many things that I can't pinpoint because she just has all of them, she's an all-around stud."&nbsp;

Studer marks the third college commit from Leblond this year, which Steltenpohl says is exciting not just for the students but for the school.&nbsp;

"That we can and are capable of producing college athletes, we had two basketball and one soccer, and I think that we can continue to have that come from Leblond," Steltenpohl says. "It's just amazing that those girls are able to step up to the challenge and stay committed to the sport that they love."&nbsp;

Bishop Leblond's Tatum Studer commits to Saint Mary's to continue basketball career

26-year-old Charlie Phillips of Savannah is heading to Berlin, Germany in June to represent the United States in the Special Olympics World Games. &nbsp;

Phillips says he is very excited for the opportunity to not only represent Missouri, but represent his country. &nbsp;

"It's a once in a lifetime opportunity that I dreamed ever since I started Special Olympics 15 years ago, and I can't believe I'm going to be representing our country in 11 weeks in powerlifting in a different country," Phillips tells KFEQ/St. Joseph Post. "That is mind blowing."&nbsp;

Phillips earned his spot in the games in November at the Team USA trials in San Antonio, Texas, posting the top deadlift and top squat. &nbsp;

Phillips says that he was nervous going into the trials, after competing earlier that week in Kansas City, and didn't even know that he had the top lifts.&nbsp;

"I was surprised when they announced that I got nominated, and then went down there, lift, and then came back up here and then went on the news station," Phillips says. "They told me that I got picked and I was so happy that time."&nbsp;

 </figure>His goal going into the competition is to get some new numbers and to make the podium. &nbsp;"Get some world records or whatever is happening I just want to be on the podium, get some world records, and pull some new numbers," Phillips happily says. "So, I can tell everyone hey look I pulled new numbers and I can show everyone how much I did over there, I just can't wait."&nbsp;Phillips has also been blown away by the community support he's received.
