KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — MJ Melendez homered and drove in four runs, Nick Pratto had a three-run double during an eight-run sixth inning, and the Kansas City Royals beat the Chicago White Sox 12-5. 

Melendez hit a two-run shot in the fourth against Dylan Cease and then had a two-run single in the sixth as the Royals turned a 4-4 game into a rout. Kansas City had its highest-scoring game this season and won consecutive home games for the first time since last September. 

Cease gave up seven runs in five-plus innings as his ERA rose to 5.58. Jose Cuas got one out in relief of Zack Greinke for the win.

The Royals take on the White Sox again Tuesday evening with first pitch at 6:40. Coverage begins at 6:00 on KFEQ (680, 95.3) in St. Joseph.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Salvador Perez homered and the Kansas City Royals beat the Oakland Athletics 5-1 on Sunday to avoid being swept in the series between teams with the worst records in the major leagues.

Kansas City (9-26) lost two of three to the A's (8-27) and dropped to 1-10 in series this season.

Perez went 3 for 4 with a 462-foot home run over the left-field fountains and scored three times. Maikel Garcia scored Perez with an RBI single, giving the Royals a 2-1 lead in the fourth.

“I hit the ball pretty good, but it counts as a homer no matter how far you hit it," Perez said. "...We have to do this more consistently and it was a great win today. We will try to come in tomorrow and do the same thing.”

Nick Pratto hit a two-run double in the eighth to highlight a three-run inning.

Ryan Yarbrough (1-4) pitched 5 2/3 innings and allowed one run on three hits with two strikeouts and a hit batter. Yarbrough was removed from the game in the sixth after getting hit in the face by a liner that was 106.2 mph off the bat of Ryan Noda. Yarbrough was able to walk off the field with the assistance of trainers.

“Your heart drops in those moments, it is one of the worst things you can see on the field," Royals manager Matt Quatraro said. "Luckily, when we got out there, (Yarbarough) was aware of what was going on. He is going to get more tests. As far as his outing until that point, that was just what we are used to seeing from him.”

Royals relievers Carlos Hernandez, Aroldis Chapman and Scott Barlow each tossed scoreless outings.

Mason Miller (0-2) gave up two runs on five hits with five strikeouts and a hit batter in six innings of work.

(Miller) is building momentum and I think each start he is just getting better and better," Oakland manager Mark Kotsay said. “Veteran Salvador (Perez) got him early in the game and seemed to see him pretty well, but was probably the only guy in the lineup really. Overall, good performance.”

Ramón Laureano broke an 0-for-10 stretch with an RBI single in the fourth. Esteury Ruiz extended his hitting streak to nine games in a 1-for-4 afternoon.

Prior to first-pitch, there was a moment of silence remembering Vida Blue, who died Saturday at the age of 73. Blue was drafted by the then Kansas City Athletics in 1967 and debuted for the A’s in 1969, shortly after the move to Oakland. Blue won an AL MVP, and Cy Young Award and was a three-time World Series champion in Oakland. He also played for the Royals from 1982-83.

Royals: RHP Max Castillo was recalled from Triple-A Omaha. RHP Jonathan Heasley was optioned in the corresponding move.

Royals: LHP Daniel Lynch (left rotator cuff strain) was expected to make a rehab start in Triple-A on Sunday. Lynch was placed on the 15-day injured list on March 30.

Perez homers, Royals avoid sweep defeating A's 5-1

TOPEKA - The Missouri Western defense played outstanding throughout Saturday's elimination game against Missouri Southern, holding the Lions to just one hit from innings 2-6.

The problem is, Missouri Southern did all of their damage in the first inning.

The Lions (40-12) scored three runs on three hits in the first inning, including a two-run homer to left center, and held on to beat Missouri Western 3-0 at the MIAA softball tournament at the Envista Softball Complex in Topeka Saturday.

The loss knocked the Griffons (37-20) out of the tournament. Missouri Western lost their first game of the tourney on Wednesday to No. 3 seed and defending national champion Rogers State.

The Griffons had since battled back, with big wins over Emporia State Thursday and another against Central Missouri Friday.

Missouri Western outhit Missouri Southern in Saturday's game 6-4, but MWSU never had more than one hit per inning, and the Griffons stranded six baserunners.

The Griffons had eight groundouts, eight flyouts and one lineout. Missouri Southern's winning pitcher, Avery Tallman, also managed three strikeouts while walking none in four innings.

Reliever Bailey Lacy tossed the final three innings to get the save.

Harley Pruetting took the loss in the circle for Missouri Western, allowing three hits and three earned runs in the first inning. Sam Pederson pitched five innings of scoreless relief for the Griffons, allowing just one hit.

Missouri Western now awaits their NCAA tournament fate. The NCAA Division II selection show is Monday, May 8 at 9 a.m. central and will be broadcast on NCAA.com.

Missouri Western was No. 9 in this week's Central Region rankings. The top eight teams in the region qualify for the tournament. Washburn, who was No. 7 in the region, went 1-2 in the MIAA tournament. Missouri Western went 2-2 in the tourney.

The No. 8 seed in the region, Minnesota-Duluth, is an automatic bid for the NCAA tournament, as they are champions of the NSIC conference bracket.

If the Griffons do get in, they'd play in the NCAA Central Region tournament on May 11-13. It's all but certain to be held in Edmond, Oklahoma, as UCO is the No. 1 seed in the region and would host.

Times and pairings will be announced during the selection show Monday.

TOPEKA - Sam Pederson struck out eight batters in a complete game shutout, Missouri Western belted four single shot home runs and the Griffon softball team fended off elimination once again in the MIAA tournament Friday, blanking Central Missouri 9-0 at the Envista Softball Complex.

The Griffons' first home run came in the top of the second inning when Chloe Armstrong blasted a ball to right center to put the Griffons on the board first at 1-0.

Kalee Higdon followed in the third with a single shot of her own. Then, Armstrong struck again with another solo bomb in the fourth. Natalee Weber added yet another solo dinger for good measure in the fifth.

Missouri Western led 4-0 after the fifth. Each of their first four hits were solo shot homers.

Armstrong was the star offensively, going 4-for-4 with two runs scored on the two dingers.

Meanwhile, Pederson (18-6) was dialed in from the get-go in the circle, striking out eight and walking just one, while allowing just three hits.

The Jennies (33-21) had two hits through the first two innings, but had no answer offensively after that. The Griffon defense sat UCM down in order in the third, fourth and fifth innings.

Missouri Western (37-19) added five more runs in the sixth and seventh innings combined. Rian Gere had a two-run RBI double in the sixth.

Gere and Maddie Swanson each had an RBI in the seventh as well.

Makenzie DeVine went 2-for-4 with a pair of runs scored. The Griffons outhit UCM 9-3 and had a stellar, error-free day in the field.

MWSU dominates UCM in MIAA softball tournament, Griffons keep battling

TOPEKA, KS - Missouri Western scored five runs in the second inning, and three more in the fourth, while Sam Pederson pitched five strong innings and the Griffons run ruled Emporia State 9-1 Thursday on a soggy day at the MIAA softball tournament in Topeka.

The Griffons (36-19) had to wait through over 2.5 hours of rain delays, as the preceding game between Washburn and Fort Hays State had multiple stoppages due to rain and a 30-minute lightning delay.

Heck, Missouri Western had to wait out a brief downpour in the bottom of the first inning during their very first at-bat of the game, but the Griffons responded.

After each team went down in order in the first, Missouri Western tallied five runs on five hits and a fielding error in the bottom of the second to jump out to a 5-0 lead. Kalee Higdon had a two-run RBI single in that span.

Emporia State (33-23) got a run back in the third, thanks to a Griffon fielding error and a pair of hits, but the Hornets never got closer.

Missouri Western tacked on three more runs in the bottom of the fourth. Kennedy Preston blasted a two-run RBI single to deep left field to vault the Griffons to a 9-1 lead.

Preston went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a run scored Thursday. She had a single-shot home run in the third inning as well.

In the circle, Pederson (17-6) struck out three batters and walked none. She allowed five hits, but Emporia's only run of the game was unearned.

Missouri Western will now play on Friday at 4 p.m. against the loser of No. 1 seed Central Oklahoma (44-6) and No. 4 seed Central Missouri (33-19). The Jennies and Bronchos play in the winner's bracket on Friday at 11 a.m.

Orioles blow 7-run lead, rally for 13-10 win over Royals

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Negro Leagues Baseball Museum is embarking on a fundraising campaign to raise $25 million for a new building to house its education center and what has become one of the world's unique collections of baseball memorabilia.

Museum president Bob Kendrick said the “Pitch for the Future” campaign is designed to lead to a new 30,000-square foot facility that would be adjacent to the Buck O’Neil Education and Research Center, which is named for the Negro Leagues great who helped to lead the fundraising effort to build the initial museum.

“Our growth from a one-room office to becoming America’s National Negro Leagues Baseball Museum has been an amazing journey," said Kendrick, who also announced that Bank of America had already donated $1 million to the project.

“Now," Kendrick said, "we’re building an organization that will continue to preserve and celebrate the triumphant story of the Negro Leagues but also fortify our position as one of the nation’s most important civil rights and social justice institutions.”

Long before Jackie Robinson broke the color barrier, Black players were largely relegated to disparate leagues spread across the U.S., often embarking on long barnstorming tours. But the preeminent organization was the Negro National League, which was founded at the Paseo YMCA in the historic 18th &amp; Vine section of Kansas City, Missouri.

The league was initially composed of eight clubs, including the Kansas City Monarchs of O'Neil, and featured some of the great players of any era — Satchel Paige, Josh Gibson and Cool Papa Bell — many of whom never got to play in the big leagues.

Robinson also played for the Monarchs before the Dodgers signed him in 1945 and baseball's integration began. Hank Aaron, Willie Mays, Ernie Banks and many others also got their starts in the Negro Leagues. But over time, as more Black players signed major league contracts, the era of the Negro Leagues slowly came to an end.

The museum is designed to keep that history alive. It features lockers set up for some of the game's best players, a “Field of Legends” where there are nearly life-sized bronze statues of players on the field, and a collection of memorabilia that includes nearly 200 autographed baseballs donated by Geddy Lee of the Canadian band Rush.

“We share NLBM’s mission to preserve and celebrate the rich history of African American baseball and its impact on the social advancement of America,” Matt Linski, the president of Bank of America Kansas City, said in announcing its donation.

“Our commitment recognizes the importance — culturally and economically — of the 18th &amp; Vine District to Kansas City and we hope it will be an example for other funders to follow," Linski said. "Additionally, this grant is paramount to ensuring greater understanding and better appreciation of the many contributions African Americans have made and continue to make, including Jackie Robinson breaking the major-league color barrier.”

(AP) — The Negro Leagues Baseball Museum is embarking on a fundraising campaign to raise $25 million for a new building to house its education center and what has become one of the world's unique collections of baseball memorabilia.Museum president Bob Kendrick said the “Pitch for the Future” campaign is designed to lead to a new 30,000-square foot facility that would be adjacent to the Buck O’Neil Education and Research Center, which is named for the Negro Leagues great who helped to lead the fundraising effort to build the initial museum.“Our growth from a one-room office to becoming America’s National Negro Leagues Baseball Museum has been an amazing journey," said Kendrick, who also announced that Bank of America had already donated $1 million to the project.“Now," Kendrick said, "we’re building an organization that will continue to preserve and celebrate the triumphant story of the Negro Leagues but also fortify our position as one of the nation’s most important civil rights and social justice institutions.”Long before Jackie Robinson broke the color barrier, Black players were largely relegated to disparate leagues spread across the U.S., often embarking on long barnstorming tours. But the preeminent organization was the Negro National League, which was founded at the Paseo YMCA in the historic 18th &amp; Vine section of Kansas City, Missouri.The league was initially composed of eight clubs, including the Kansas City Monarchs of O'Neil, and featured some of the great players of any era — Satchel Paige, Josh Gibson and Cool Papa Bell — many of whom never got to play in the big leagues.Robinson also played for the Monarchs before the Dodgers signed him in 1945 and baseball's integration began. Hank Aaron, Willie Mays, Ernie Banks and many others also got their starts in the Negro Leagues. But over time, as more Black players signed major league contracts, the era of the Negro Leagues slowly came to an end.The museum is designed to keep that history alive. It features lockers set up for some of the game's best players, a “Field of Legends” where there are nearly life-sized bronze statues of players on the field, and a collection of memorabilia that includes nearly 200 autographed baseballs donated by Geddy Lee of the Canadian band Rush.“We share NLBM’s mission to preserve and celebrate the rich history of African American baseball and its impact on the social advancement of America,” Matt Linski, the president of Bank of America Kansas City, said in announcing its donation.“Our commitment recognizes the importance — culturally and economically — of the 18th &amp; Vine District to Kansas City and we hope it will be an example for other funders to follow," Linski said. Negro Leagues Museum starts drive for new $25M facility

TOPEKA, KS - The Missouri Western softball team overcame a three-run deficit, and grabbed a lead in the ninth inning, but No. 9 ranked and defending national champion Rogers State outlasted the Griffons 6-5 in 11 innings in the opening round of the MIAA softball tournament in Topeka Wednesday night.

The Griffons (35-19) were outhit in the game 15-8, but were able to score a pair of unearned runs off of three Rogers State errors.

Missouri Western trailed 3-0 at the end of the first and then 4-2 after the third, but the Griffons tied it at 4-4, thanks to a two-run homerun to centerfield by Bubba Hoelscher.

The game remained tied at 4-4 up until the top of the ninth. With the game now in extra innings, Missouri Western's Jada Collins got on with a one-out double to deep left.

Collins was eventually brought home on a sac fly from Kennedy Preston, giving Missouri Western their first lead of the game at 5-4.

That lead was short lived though, as Rogers State's Bridget Morales blasted a single shot homer over the centerfield fence to knot the game again at 5-5.

The Griffons were held to just one hit through the 10th and 11th innings combined and were unable to reclaim the lead.

Rogers, who left the bases loaded in the 8th inning, and stranded runners on second and third to end the 10th, finally came through in the bottom of the 11th.

With Morales on second base after a double, Abbey Rogers brought her home in the next at-bat with a walk-off RBI single to center, lifting the Hillcats to a 6-5 victory.

The Griffons fell, despite a solid 7.1 innings of relief from freshman pitcher Harley Pruetting. She struck out eight batters and walked three, while allowing 10 hits and two earned runs.

Jade Sanders tossed 7.1 innings of relief for the Hillcats, striking out seven, walking four and allowing just one earned run.

Kennedy Preston scored two runs for Missouri Western, while Hoelscher led the way with two RBIs. The Griffons stranded 12 baserunners in the loss, but Rogers State stranded 11 on base themselves.

Missouri Western, the No. 6 seed in the double elimination MIAA tournament, now faces No. 7 seed Emporia State (33-22) in an elimination game on Thursday at 1:30 p.m.

Pasquantino HRs, Greinke wins 1st as Royals top Orioles 6-0

Following the success of the Division II Women's Elite Eight this past March, more high-profile women's college basketball will be coming to St. Joseph.&nbsp;

The St. Joseph Sports Commision has announced the Inaugural Bill Snyder Classic will be played on December 9th between Kansas State and Missouri. &nbsp;

Sports Commision Director Brett Esely says this event took a lot of planning but came to be thanks to local connections with people at Kansas State University. &nbsp;

"In leveraging some relationships, gauging interest on whether or not playing a game in St. Joe would ever be a possibility, knowing where teams are playing non-conference games these days, goodness they're playing everywhere," Esely tells KFEQ/St. Joseph Post. "They're playing on aircraft carriers, hotel ballrooms, a number of neutral sites, and this just seemed like an opportunity especially given what was going on at Civic Arena, given our NCAA success."&nbsp;

Former Missouri Western women's basketball head coach and Hall of Famer Jeff Mittie is the current head coach for the Wildcats. &nbsp;

Some local talent will also return to the area this December when the Kansas State Wildcats come to St. Joseph.&nbsp;

Junior Serena Sundell played high school basketball in Maryville, before continuing her career at Kansas State.&nbsp;

Esely says it's very important for colleges to get their student athletes back in front of their home crowds&nbsp;

"And I think that was definitely a part of the motivation for Kansas State," Esely says. "Serena Sundell, you know Serena obviously had a great high school career at Maryville High, and she carried that right over to Kansas State."&nbsp;

Sundell in her freshman year was named to the Big 12 All-Freshman team and has scored in double digits both years starting for the Wildcats.&nbsp;

Esely says what's also important though is the experience provided to student athletes&nbsp;

"Even though these institutions will play in venues of all shapes and sizes, some are new, some have been around a number of years, some are state of the art, some are historic, it is about the experience that they play in," Esely explains&nbsp;

Kansas State and Missouri will play in the inaugural Bill Snyder Classic at Civic Arena on December 9th.&nbsp; Ticket information will be released this summer.&nbsp;

The inaugural women's basketball matchup will hope to bring an even bigger impact to St. Joseph than the city saw during the Division II Women's Elite Eight.&nbsp;

Brett Esely says this is truly a regional event that will have impacts on all the facets he looks at. &nbsp;

"Considering not only is there a tremendous fan base and alumni footprint of Kansas State and Missouri right here in St. Joe, but in northwest Missouri, northeast Kansas, this is a draw from the Kansas City area," Esely says. "This is really a two-hour regional draw given, I think, the uniqueness this game has."&nbsp;

Esely says when planning an event, he looks at how it would impact the community, the teams involved, and tourism to St. Joseph. &nbsp;

Ticket information will be released later this summer.&nbsp;

Mountcastle's pair of 2-run HRs sends O's to 11-7 win in KC

Former Missouri Western cornerback D.J. Stirgus has never been to the nation's capital before.

Heck, he didn't even know previously that the Washington Commanders are based there.

"Honestly, I did not know Washington (the team) was in Washington D.C.," Stirgus admitted, smiling. "I did not know that at all. But, just grateful for the opportunity, man. Gotta give honor to God."

That opportunity came in the form of a phone call this past Saturday night. Stirgus was home in Benton, Arkansas with his family when his agent called.

 Stirgus joined the Commanders as an undrafted free agent.

"I couldn't eat, use the bathroom, I was so nervous," he said. "Then the call came from my agent. He was the one who told me. I almost started crying, well, I did start crying. I hugged my Mom. Just estatic."

A first-team all-MIAA selection in 2022, Stirgus finished this past season with 26 tackles, five pass breakups and an interception. He went to Mizzou's Pro Day in late March, where he said personnel from numerous teams approached him.

"I felt like I did great and I got told that from many scouts," Stirgus said. "It showed, because I'm a Commander now. Somebody liked it."

Stirgus finished 8th in Missouri Western history with 30 career pass breakups. He was named to the Elite 100 First Team in January, and was also named Missouri Western's Male Athlete of the Year on Monday.

He's now one of four former Griffons active in the NFL, joining corner and former teammate Sam Webb (Raiders), kicker Greg Zuerlein (Jets) and safety Jonathan Owens (Texans).

Another former Griffon and former teammate of Stirgus', cornerback Brandin Dandridge, is in his fifth season with the Ottawa Redblacks in the Canadian Football League.

Couple that with Platte County native and former Missouri Western safety Kobe Cummings earning a rookie minicamp invite from the Kansas City Chiefs on Monday.

"We're like DBU (Defensive Back University) of Division II," Stirgus said of Missouri Western. "Sam (Webb) has been a major help through this process. Any time I need something I call him. They've all been a major help in those whole situation, because I went in blind and knew nothing of it. They just made it so much easier for me."

Stirgus will report for his first workouts with the Commanders in mid-May. While he looks forward to what's next, he'll never forget what's behind in St. Joseph.

Especially since he was named as Missouri Western's Male Athlete of the Year at the Golden Griff awards Monday night.

"Man I love it here," he said fondly. "Have always loved it here. It's quiet, nice place. The people are great. I couldn't have asked for a better home, honestly."

That shot wound up being the difference, as No. 5 Bishop LeBlond (9-5) played tenacious defense throughout in a 1-0 win at No. 1 Mid-Buchanan on Tuesday.

Cathcart scored the matches' only goal with 13:36 left in the first half.

"Kendall works so hard," LeBlond head coach Chad Thompson said. "For the first part of the season, she wasn't shooting, and I was like, 'You have got to start shooting!' and I think she's had 7-8 goals in the past three games. She is a work horse, she hustles, hits the ball with both feet. Pretty physical on defense and offense. She'll be a pleasure to coach over the next several years."

The match was largely a defensive chess match, if not stale mate, as the Dragons (14-3-1) were held without a shot-on-goal in the first half.

"The girls played really well," Thompson added. "The first half, I think we did a little bit better with possession. We had moments of playing kickball back and forth, but overall, really really pleased with how they played. I like where we're at."

LeBlond managed six shots-on-goal in the match, and Mid-Buchanan goalie Mallie Lieffring finished with five saves.

The Dragons turned up the aggression on offense in the last 20 or so minutes, and had a few attacks toward the LeBlond goal, reeling off three shots-on-goal in the final 40 minutes.

Still, nothing came to fruition, as LeBlond goalkeeper Maddie Sego had three saves, including a diving stop to save a groundball attempt from Mid-Buch's Jordan Thornton with 19:30 remaining.

The Eagles disrupted the Dragons' offense all day, plugging gaps and winning balls throughout.

"It's really about talking to each other," said sophomore defender Lia Pinkelman, "and making sure we're communicating with each other and letting each other know the backs and the fronts and covering. So, it's supporting each other."

LeBlond, which has now won three of its last four matches after a 3-3 start to the season, has some newfound momentum with the Class 1 District 8 tournament coming up May 16.

Mid-Buchanan, though, is the host site of that bracket, and there's pretty strong odds that the Eagles and Dragons will clash for a district title for a third straight season.

Whatever happens, LeBlond was more than happy to take one from the Dragons Tuesday, especially since the Eagles lost 1-0 the last time they played in Faucett. And that was for a district title last May.

"It's going to be a pusher," Pinkelman said of the win. "They beat us in the past, we beat them this time. So, we can beat other teams who have beat us in the past."

"Can't overlook them for sure," Thompson added on Mid-Buch.

LeBlond is home to Cameron next Tuesday. Mid-Buchanan is home to Guadalupe Charters Center on Wednesday at 5 p.m.

Kendall Cathcart scores lone goal, LeBlond scores hard earned win at Mid-Buchanan

The MIAA announced its postseason awards and All-MIAA teams for the 2023 softball season on Tuesday, and Missouri Western's&nbsp;Sydni Hawkins&nbsp;was named the league's Player of the Year after a record setting 2023.

Hawkins, who was MIAA Player of the Year in 2021 as well, was the league's top hitter this season with 77 hits and an MIAA-best batting average of .443. 

The fifth-year senior from Wichita, Kansas, also led the league in doubles (19) and tied for second in triples (5) and ranked among the league's top-five scorers with 47 runs scored on the season.

Her on-base percentage of .476 and her OPS of 1.120 also ranked in the league's top 10.

What's more, Hawkins rewrote the MWSU record books this season. Her 293 career hits, 189 career runs and 62 career doubles are all program records she set in 2023.

Hawkins was named the Missouri Western Female Athlete of the Year on Monday at the annual Golden Griff awards at the Missouri Theatre.

Hawkins has earned all-MIAA accolades for each of the last four seasons and was first-team all-American and All-Region in 2021.

Five other Griffon softball players earned all-MIAA honors Tuesday. Pitcher&nbsp; Sam Pedersen&nbsp;and outfielder Mackenzie Devine were named to the second team, while pitcher Harley Pruetting, catcher Kennedy Preston and outfielder Abby Dickey were honorable mention selections.

These players helped lead Missouri Western (35-18) to the No. 6 seed in the MIAA tournament, where the Griffons will take on the defending MIAA tournament champion and defending national champion Rogers State (41-10) in Topeka, Kansas Wednesday.

Missouri Western's Sydni Hawkins named MIAA Softball Player of the Year

Missouri Western athletics announced Monday that Damian Stambersky&nbsp;has been promoted and named the new head baseball coach of the Griffons.

Stambersky has more than 20 years of coaching experience. He spent the 2023 season with the Griffons as the lead assistant and pitching coach. "I'm excited to have Damian take the helm of the Griffon baseball program," Missouri Western athletic director Andy Carter said in a statement.

"He is respected on campus and in the baseball community, and his energy, enthusiasm, and experience placed him at the top of an exceptional field of candidates for this position. He is the right man to write the next chapter in the history of this program."

Stambersky's promotion comes one day after Buzz Verduzco's final game as head coach of the Griffons. It was announced before the 2023 season started that Verduzco would retire after 23 years at the helm of Missouri Western baseball.

Verduzco achieved a program-best 629 wins during his tenure. He also took the Griffons to four NCAA Tournaments and an MIAA Regular Season Championship. He was also the 2013 MIAA Coach of the Year.

"I want to thank Coach Verduzco for bringing me here a year ago, and I want to thank Andy Carter for his confidence in my ability to lead this program forward," Stambersky said. "I believe that Griffon baseball is positioned for success and I am looking forward to the road ahead."

Missouri Western baseball concluded the 2023 regular season with a 15-4 win over No. 16 Missouri Southern on Sunday in St. Joseph. The Griffons' record finished at 15-32 overall and 11-22 in the MIAA.

The Griffons finished 12th in the 14-team league, and did not advance to the MIAA tournament. Prior to joining the Griffons this past season, Stambersky spent one year as the pitching coach at Division I Radford University, and one season as the head coach at Colorado State-Pueblo, where he guided the program to four top-25 wins. Stambersky also spent six seasons as the pitching coach at Central Missouri. While there, the Mules advanced to two NCAA Division II College World Series appearances (2016 and 2019) and compiled an incredible 210-91 record.

The Mules captured two MIAA regular-season titles, made three appearances in the NCAA tournament, and captured three MIAA tournament titles during his tenure. Before Central Missouri, Stambersky spent 11 seasons coaching at Kansas City Community College as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator. While there, he coached nine players to Division I opportunities as well as four players who would move on to play professionally.

Missouri Western names Damian Stambersky as the new head baseball coach

A handful of college football players from area universities will have a chance to continue their careers in the NFL.

Former Missouri Western cornerback D.J. Stirgus signed as an undrafted free agent with the Washington Commanders Saturday.

Stirgus, a first-team all-MIAA selection last year, finished the 2022 season with 26 tackles, five pass breakups and an interception. He went to Mizzou's Pro Day in late March.

Stirgus finished 8th in Missouri Western history with 30 pass breakups and he was named to the Elite 100 First Team in January.

Meanwhile, former Missouri Western defensive end A.J. Crayton has been invited to the Chiefs rookie minicamp this month.

A two-time honorable mention all-MIAA selection, Crayton finished his Griffon career with 21.5 tackles for loss and 11 sacks. He also blocked five kicks in his career.

Elsewhere, Northwest Missouri State defensive tackle Zach Howard got an invite to the Chiefs' rookie minicamp. Benedictine offensive lineman Chim Okorafor got a minicamp invite from the Eagles.
