MANHATTAN, Kan. -- Jonathan Adams Jr. caught a career-high three touchdown passes, including the game-winner with 38 seconds remaining, and Arkansas State defeated Kansas State 35-31 on Saturday for the Red Wolves' first win over a Power 5 opponent in a dozen years.

Layne Hatcher threw a 17-yard pass to Adams for the winning score after the Wildcats (0-1) had taken a 31-28 lead on a Blake Lynch 35-yard field goal with 2:30 remaining.

"Obviously excited about the win," said Arkansas State head coach Blake Anderson. "Excited, but not surprised."

Arkansas State (1-1) scored 21 unanswered points after trailing 21-7 midway through the second quarter.

Most of the offense flowed through the 6-foot-3 Adams.

"The quarterbacks put the ball in a good spot, and I just use my athleticism to turn my hips and go get the ball and go over the corner's head and stuff like that," said Adams, who had 98 yards receiving on eight catches.

Arkansas State held Kansas State to 91 yards rushing. The Wildcats averaged 178 rushing yards per game in 2019.

"We were able to create some penetration, create some issues where they could not get downhill all night long," Anderson said.

Kansas State (0-1) had not dropped its home opener since 2013.

"It wasn't the outcome that we wanted. We didn't play particularly well. I know what the guys have gone through over the past month to five weeks trying to prepare to play, and we can't make excuses," said Kansas State head coach Chris Klieman.

Skylar Thompson finished with 259 yards passing and two touchdowns in the loss.

"There are three or four (passes) that I can think of that were just inches off, or I missed a throw or misjudged on a ball and just couldn't get on the same page there a couple times," Thompson said.

Deuce Vaughn led Kansas State in rushing with 47 yards and a touchdown, becoming the first true freshman to score for the Wildcats in a season opener since 1988.

The Wildcats scored on their first possession on a 17-yard catch by Phillip Brooks following a blocked punt. They added TDs on consecutive drives in the second quarter to lead 21-7. After being held scoreless in the third quarter, they responded with a 5-yard touchdown run by Harry Trotter, followed by Lynch's field goal.

The Red Wolves (1-1) gained 489 total yards after collecting 424 yards in a 37-24 loss to Memphis last weekend.

The Red Wolves beat a Power 5 program for the second time since moving up to FBS status in 1992. Their previous win came over Texas A&amp;M, 18-14, in 2008.

Arkansas State put on a magic show in Manhattan, fooling Kansas State with trick plays.

On a double-pass play, wide receiver Jeff Foreman threw a 48-yard score to Roshauud Paul midway through the second quarter.

Early in the fourth quarter, the Red Wolves faked a punt that led to a pass interference call. On that drive, a pass off a double-reverse set up a 5-yard score to Adams from Logan Bonner for a 28-21 lead.

Arkansas State: The quick tempo and aggressive play-calling kept the Red Wolves in the game and proved to be the difference. Arkansas State kept the Wildcats' ground game in check.

Kansas State: The Wildcats failed to establish the run game and had to rely on the arm of Skylar Thompson, an uncommon offensive strategy for the Wildcats.

Arkansas State will host Central Arkansas next Saturday.

Kansas State will have a week off before opening Big 12 play against Oklahoma on September 26.

K-State upset by Arkansas State 35-31 in season opener

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Adalberto Mondesi homered and stole a base for the third consecutive game, Kyle Zimmer got his first career win after a winding path to the major leagues and the Kansas City Royals beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 7-4 on Saturday night.

Whit Merrifield added a solo homer and the Royals won their fifth straight game. It was the third consecutive loss for Pittsburgh.

Mondesi and Bobby Abreu in 2004 are the only players to homer and steal a base in three straight games since at least 1901, according to MLB.com.

"He just continues to take great at bats and making things happen," manager Mike Matheny said.

Zimmer (1-0) pitched 2 1/3 scoreless innings, allowing a hit and a walk and striking out one. The 28-year-old was the fifth overall pick in the 2012 draft by Kansas City but didn't debut in the majors until last season due to recurring shoulder issues that threatened to end his career.

"I just got a bunch of milk and barbecue sauce dumped on me," Zimmer said. "It's hard to look back and it's been a long road with a lot of years of grinding, but I just try to stay in the moment."

After struggling through 15 outings last season in his first taste of the majors, Zimmer owns a 1.35 ERA in 13 appearances this season.

Zimmer relieved Carlos Hernandez after the right-hander allowed solo homers by Josh Bell, Bryan Reynolds and Adam Frazier.

"I thought he had really good stuff today," Matheny said. "Even his misses were close misses and there's a few things he needs to continue to work on."

Greg Holland pitched the ninth for his fifth save.

Mondesi tied it at 3 with his two-run homer in the third inning. He has four homers in the past six games after failing to hit one in the first 41 games of the season.

Trevor Williams (1-7) took the loss for the Pirates, allowing 10 hits and six runs in five innings.

"It's just the consistency of execution," Pirates manager Derek Shelton said. "We see it in stretches and then he loses it during the game. We got to get him back on track executing in his zone."

Merrifield led the bottom of the first off with a home run, his ninth on the year.

Salvador Perez hit an RBI single that scored Mondesi after he singled and stole second to put the Royals up 4-3. Olivares and Gordon also had RBI in the fifth to extend the lead to 6-3.

Nicky Lopez picked up an RBI in the seventh off Kyle Crick who walked two batters and gave up two hits in 2/3 of an inning.

Scott Barlow allowed one run on an RBI by Frazier

The game was pushed back 30 minutes after an armed man fired shots at nearby Arrowhead Stadium from the parking lot. The suspect was taken into custody.

Royals extend win streak to five with 7-4 victory over Pirates

ST. LOUIS -- Dakota Hudson allowed just one hit in six innings and the St. Louis Cardinals backed him with four home runs to beat the Cincinnati Reds 7-1 on Saturday night.

Harrison Bader hit a three-run homer and Matt Carpenter and Paul Goldschmidt added solo drives in the sixth as the Cardinals broke it open.

Hudson (3-2) won his third consecutive decision and second this season over Cincinnati. He didn't allow a hit through his first five innings. Hudson struck out four and walked four.

72 Griffons earn DII ADA Academic Achievement Awards

ST. LOUIS -- Luis Castillo pitched a two-hitter for his first complete game in the majors, Joey Votto homered and the Cincinnati Reds beat the St. Louis Cardinals 3-1 Friday night.

Castillo (2-5) struck out six and walked three in winning his second straight start. An All-Star last year, the right-hander made his 87th career start in the big leagues.

"It's marvelous," Castillo said. "To throw nine innings of a baseball game, I'm super, super emotional."

Castillo outpitched Adam Wainwright (4-1), who allowed three runs in six innings. The Cardinals lost for the fourth time in six games.

Only twice did St. Louis get a runner to third against Castillo, who has given up just three earned runs in his past 15 innings.

Castillo retired 13 straight before walking Paul Goldschmidt with two outs in the ninth, then got Brad Miller on a grounder to end it. With the help of a double play in the fifth, Castillo faced one over the minimum in the final six innings.

"It is pretty rare in today's game," Reds manager David Bell said of the complete game. "So it's that much more special. I don't know what was better, seeing him pitch or the smiles. It's great for him. It's great for the team."

Votto hit his seventh home run of the season in the first off Wainwright to give the Reds a 2-0 lead. The two-run drive came on a 3-1 count with one out to drive in Nick Castellanos.

Votto has faced Wainwright 57 times over their long careers, batting .333 with four homers and 11 RBI.

Friday marked the 15th anniversary of Wainwright's big league debut. In the latter part of his career he's adjusted to become more of a finesse pitcher rather than the hard thrower he's been most of his career.

He said the touch wasn't always there Friday, especially in the first when he gave up three hits. All three, including Votto's homer, came off "sloppy" cutters.

"Luckily I had a decent sinker going and nice movement on my fastball," he said. "But my curve ball was horrible. And my cutter, we found out right away, was flat and slow."

Eugenio Suarez doubled in Shogo Akiyama in the Reds third.

Paul DeJong hit an RBI double in the second for St. Louis.

Cardinals 3B Matt Carpenter drew his 661st career walk in the sixth. That moved him past St. Louis great Rogers Hornsby to seventh on the team's all-time list.

Cardinals drop series opener to Cincinnati 3-1

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Just about the only thing that looked familiar about the NFL's long-awaited return Thursday night was the sight of Patrick Mahomes effortlessly leading the Kansas City Chiefs up and down the field.

The Super Bowl MVP threw for 211 yards and three touchdowns, Clyde Edwards-Helaire ran through the rain for 138 yards and another score, and the Chiefs began defense of their first championship in 50 years by beating the Houston Texans 34-20 on Thursday night before a socially distanced crowd of about 17,000 due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Travis Kelce, Sammy Watkins and Tyreek Hill each caught TD passes for the Chiefs. They have won 10 straight dating to last season. That run includes a come-from-behind 51-31 victory over the Texans in the divisional round of the playoffs.

"I'm proud of our players but I'm also proud of our fans. They came out there. They were loud," said Chiefs coach Andy Reid, who claimed he didn't notice some booing from fans during a pregame moment of unity involving both teams.

"Obviously, our players, both sides of the ball and special teams , I thought they were solid," Reid continued. "For the first game there were some good things that were done, some great individual performances."

The Texans' Deshaun Watson threw a touchdown pass and ran for another score, but he also was under relentless pressure and was intercepted once. David Johnson provided the biggest bright spot for Houston, running for 77 yards and a score.

"There's a lot to fix," Texans coach Bill O'Brien said. "It's only one game. We have to improve pretty quickly. But it's only one game . We have to get back to work pretty soon and fix these things."

The world has changed dramatically in the seven months since the Chiefs hoisted the Lombardi Trophy in Miami.

Within six weeks, the term COVID-19 had become a part of everyday life, the disease killing more than 900,000 people around the globe. The death of George Floyd at the knee of a white Minneapolis police officer in May touched off the Black Lives Matter movement, which in turn has led to a summer of social unrest that has gripped the country.

Against that backdrop came an NFL opener unlike any other: masks worn by everyone from fans to the coaching staffs; a series of videos raising awareness of social justice initiatives and encouraging the public to vote; and ultimately both teams locking arms in a display of unity prior to the coin toss.

To the relief of many, kickoff finally brought 4 hours of normalcy.

The Texans, who blew a 24-point lead against Kansas City in the the playoffs, struck first when they marched 80 yards for a touchdown. The elusive Johnson finished it off by scampering 19 yards to the end zone for a 7-0 lead.

But just like that cold January day, the red-hot Chiefs quickly overcame their slow start.

They tied it moments later when Mahomes threw a short touchdown pass to Kelce, then took the lead when they forced a quick punt and Mahomes found Watkins in the end zone. Harrison Butker capped the first half by kicking a chip-shot field goal that sent the Chiefs to the locker room with a 17-7 lead.

Edwards-Helaire, their first-round pick, padded the lead in the third quarter. After ripping off an 11-yard gain early in the drive, the pint-sized dynamo out of LSU unleashed a wicked stutter-step before running 27 yards for another score.

"H'es just another weapon I have in this offense," Mahomes said.

The Chiefs put the game away when rookie L'Jarius Sneed picked off Watson's jump ball in the closing seconds of the third quarter. Mahomes was bailed out of a fourth-down interception by pass interference in the end zone, then he zipped a dart to Hill streaking across the field for a 31-7 lead early in the fourth quarter.

"We just trust whatever Coach Reid is dialing up," said Kelce, who finished with six catches for 50 yards. "They do an unbelievable job preparing us and scheming up defenses and we just trust what they're doing."

Watson threw a touchdown pass and ran for a TD later in the quarter to make the final score a bit more respectable.

"It was a little different but the fans did what they did for their home team and that was pretty much it," Watson said. "We just got to continue to do our job, find the rhythm, get guys on the same page and that's pretty much it."

The Chiefs had a touchdown on their opening series brought back when the officials determined Demarcus Robinson failed to control a 36-yard pass from Mahomes in the end zone. They had another overturned when Watkins caught a 9-yard pass in the second quarter, though he wound up catching a screen pass for a TD two plays later.

The Chiefs lined up along the goal line about 30 minutes before kickoff and watched Alicia Keyes perform "Lift Every Voice and Sing," which is often considered the Black national anthem, in a video designed to address racial inequality.

The Texans had already left the field when the demonstration occurred. They remained there until R&amp;B duo Chloe x Halle finished a virtual performance of "The Star-Spangled Banner," then ran onto the field to a chorus of boos from fans.

Some fans were still booing when the teams met at midfield and shook hands. The teams then stood together in a line that stretched from one end zone to the other for a moment of silence before the coin toss.

"Listen, I didn't really notice it," Reid said of the booing. "I thought that was kind of a neat deal, both sides coming together for a cause. The story was told there. Whether it was the national anthems and how those were presented, the singers -- Alicia Keyes was phenomenal -- and then guys joining hands together for a cause. Really just to make us all better and a stronger country than we all are. We have a chance to be unstoppable when we all come together."

In a relatively muted celebration, the Chiefs unveiled their Super Bowl banner and presented the Lombardi Trophy to their fans -- along with a 20-foot replica that was wheeled onto the field -- about 15 minutes before the game began.

Chiefs: DT Khalen Saunders (elbow) left in the first quarter with an elbow injury. DE Alex Okafor hurt his hamstring in the third and did not return. CB Charvarius Ward left in the fourth quarter with a hand injury.

Chiefs begin title defense with 34-20 victory over Texans

CLEVELAND -- Brady Singer's bid at history turned to heartbreak in one pitch.

"I had all the confidence in the world we were going to see it happen," Royals manager Mike Matheny said.

Singer allowed just one hit -- a two-out single to Austin Hedges through an infield shift in the eighth inning -- and the rookie flirted with a baseball rarity while leading Kansas City to a 11-1 win over the Cleveland Indians on Thursday night.

Making just his ninth big league start, the 24-year-old right-hander was four outs from becoming only the 36th rookie to throw a no-hitter when Hedges, who came in batting .148, bounced a single through a wide-open right side.

Kansas City had shifted its infield for the right-handed hitting Hedges, and he found the hole left open when second baseman Nicky Lopez moved.

"I honestly kind of blacked out," Singer said of his reaction. "I saw him get jammed, I saw it kind of get him on the handle. I don't know who was playing there. I didn't turn around and see what the shift was, honestly. But it snuck through. That's how the game works."

Hedges got the hit on a 93 mph full-count fastball on Singer's 116th pitch, and after Matheny came out to visit him,. Singer finished the inning and was warmly greeted by teammates when he got back to Kansas City's dugout.

"I felt really good from the start," Singer said. "It was probably a bad thing, but I kind of noticed there was no hits after the third inning. So it was stressful, but I felt sharp from pitch one and tried to stay focused the whole time."

Singer (2-4) threw 119 pitches, the second-highest total in the majors this season behind the 122 by St. Louis' Adam Wainwright on Aug. 30. Matheny said he was going to let Singer go as long as he needed to finish the no-hitter.

"I just thought that it was going to be a special night," Matheny said. "I was right, but unfortunately, it was just short of being as special as we wanted. Not many guys get an opportunity like that. That was going to be his no matter what."

Hedges, acquired from San Diego on Aug. 31, said he went to the plate determined not to let the Indians get blanked.

"I was just trying to have a good at-bat, see some pitches and wait for a mistake," Hedges said. "And he gave me one of those."

Maikel Franco and Adalberto Mondesi each hit three-run homers and Edward Olivares added a solo shot off Aaron Civale (3-5). The Royals have won three straight since stopping a seven-game losing streak.

Franco also had a two-run single and drove in five runs.

Singer's performance came in his first start after giving up a season-high 10 hits -- all singles -- in a loss to the White Sox on Sept 4.

The Indians have struggled at the plate all season and they spent most of the unusually chilly evening inside Progressive Field either over-swinging or guessing against Singer, who made his major league debut against Cleveland on July 25.

Singer gave up a one-out walk in the first but then retired the Indians with relative ease.

Cleveland had a few close calls: Tyler Naquin flied out to the warning track in right in the fifth, Cesar Hernandez lined out to end the sixth and Francisco Lindor hit a rocket to shortstop Mondesi in the seventh.

The Indians even tried to jinx Singer by putting him on the video board in the sixth inning above the caption: "Currently pitching a no-hitter."

He got through two outs in the eighth but couldn't put away Hedges, who joined Cleveland last week in a trade from San Diego.

Cleveland avoided being shut out with a run in the ninth, but the Indians have scored just two runs in their last 24 innings and Singer made them look inept.

"He kept the ball down, ball in the corner, low pitches borderline, they were giving them to him," said Indians acting manager Sandy Alomar Jr. "He earned those pitches. He has a good arm and he was painting the corners. So you have to give him some kudos."

Alomar joked that it would take three hours to describe all the unexpected decisions he's had to make while filling in for Terry Francona.

Alomar credited the team's collaboration and culture in helping offset Francona's absence.

"The players miss him," Alomar said of Francona, who has missed 30 games. "As a student, you can only handle the substitute teacher for so long. You have to bring the real teacher back. It's been fun, but I tell him all the time: `Get your butt back, bro."

Indians: 3B Jose Ramirez got another day off to rest his sore left thumb. Alomar said the switch-hitting Ramirez has more of an issue when he bats left-handed. The team is hoping some down time and treatment will help Ramirez heal. Entering Thursday, he led the club in homers, RBI and steals.
