Mary Ann Ellis 61, of Saint Joseph, MO passed away unexpectedly Sunday, December 22, 2019 in Saint Joseph, MO. 

She was born June 28, 1958 in St. Joseph, MO, daughter of the late Michael and Frances Hernandez. She graduated from Bishop LeBlond High School class of 1976. She met Michael when she was 14 and they later married on April 1, 1977 at St. Patrick Catholic Church. They were each other’s best friends and were blessed with over 42 years of marriage. She retired from American Family Insurance from the Personal Lines Department after 28 years of service and then worked another 10 years as a temp along with babysitting her grandkids. Completely retiring to be a full time GG. Family was her everything, especially her 5 grandchildren, there wasn’t a day that she didn’t see, speak or was involved some way with them. She loved cooking and was always in the kitchen, so many have had her wonderful enchiladas and famous apple cake. She never met a stranger and loved to help others. Mary Ann loved to travel and was always planning her next trip. Any chance she got she would sneak out to the casino. Mary Ann was a member of St. James Altar Society, she served as a Eucharistic Minister for the Shut-ins, and was Past PTO President at St. James School, she was a member of St. James Catholic Church. 

Mary Ann was preceded in death by her parents, and a brother, Michael Richard Hernandez Jr. 

Survivors include husband, Mike Ellis of the home, daughters, Michelle Conard and husband Daniel, and Melissa Nash and husband Jimmy all of St. Joseph, MO, sisters, Barb Fuson and husband Matt, St. Joseph, MO, and Patty Weidmaier, Kansas City, MO grandchildren, Kyla and Rilyn Conard, and Ellis, Malia and Ava Nash, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.  

The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, December 27, 2019, at 11:00 am at the St. James Catholic Church, Father Evan Harkins, and Father Vincent Rogers Con-Celebrating. The family will receive friends from 5- 8 pm Thursday at St. James Catholic Church, where the Rosary will be recited at 7:30 pm. The Interment will be at the Mount Olivet Cemetery. Helen (Browning) Kibler, 94, of Elwood, Kansas formerly of Wathena, Kansas died Saturday, December 21, 2019 in St. Joseph, Missouri.

She had worked for Motor Vehicle Department in Topeka, KS, County Superintendent of Schools Atchison, KS, and Rockwell International, retiring in 1985.

She married Basil Moore on June 5, 1949; he preceded her in death on December 28, 2007. Survivors include two daughters, Peggy (Edward) Woodward, Bonner Springs, KS, Jean Waller, Glen Ellyn, IL, two sisters, Betty Hart, Leawood, KS, Bonnie Anderson, Muscotah, KS, two granddaughters, Jennie (Tom) Watt, Morgan(Kelly) Scott, a grandson, Brett (Brooke) Woodward, two great granddaughters, Scarlett Woodward, Gabriella Watt, two great grandsons, Raef Woodward, Harrison Scott.

Josephine Almanza Deaton, age 90, of St. Joseph, Missouri, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, December 17, 2019, in Priddy Harbor at Methodist Manor in Tulsa, Oklahoma. She was born November 7, 1929 in St. Joseph, the eldest of 8 children of Martin and Victoria (Ortiz) Almanza. She graduated from Benton High School, class of 1947 and afterward attended Platte Gard Business College.

On September 1, 1951 she married Robert Allen Deaton who was home on leave while training with the 101st Airborne Division at Fort Campbell, Kentucky, the elite Screaming Eagles of the United States Army.

Josephine was a life-long resident of the South Side, except for the last two years, when she moved to the Tulsa area to be closer to her children and grandchildren. Josephine and Bob were faithful members of King Hill Baptist Church (now Journey Baptist Church). Over the years, she served as a leader in the Girls' Auxiliary; an officer in the Women's Missionary Union (WMU, where the Lottie Moon Christmas Missions offering was especially dear to her heart and she also taught Vacation Bible School.

She was active in her community in a variety of ways. She was a past-President of Hosea Elementary School PTA; she loved being a Cub Scout Den Mother; she was a valuable member of the St. Joseph Garden Club and she was a charter member of the Cardinal Red Hat Society. Josephine and Bob frequently volunteered at the local food pantry and they donated their time and treasures to Robidoux Row.

She worked for many years as an Administrative Assistant at the Missouri Department of Transportation (MODOT) before she retired to enjoy more time with her family.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her loving husband; her brother, Tommie, and her sisters, Evelyn Soper and Margaret Owens. She is survived by: her daughter, Diane Deaton, Baton Rouge, Louisiana; her son, Steve (Jo Anne) Deaton, Tulsa, Oklahoma; her grandchildren, Ashley Deaton (Chase) Colpitt, Stavanger, Norway; Rachel Deaton (fiance James Hunter, Tulsa, Oklahoma; step-grandchildren Shannon (Chris) Barsotti, Pownal, Vermont; Colin McCullough, Tulsa, Oklahoma; her brothers, George (Carol) Almanza, St. Joseph; Ed (Mary Lou) Almanza, Lawrence, Kansas; and her sisters, Henrietta Massie, Poway, California; Connie Cridlebaugh, Kansas City, Missouri; along with numerous beloved nieces and nephews.

Josephine was known by many names- Josie, Jos, Jo and Fina- but the names she treasured the most were Mom and Grandma. She leaves behind a legacy of faith, love and compassion.

Funeral services will be conducted at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, December 28, 2019 at Rupp Funeral Home, with Pastor Jacob McMillian officiating. The family will receive friends from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. Friday, December 27, 2019 at Rupp Funeral Home. Interment will be at Memorial Park Cemetery. TROY, KANSAS – Julia “Judy” (Simmons) Ross 92, of Troy, Kansas passed away at her home surrounded by her family on Thursday, December 19, 2019.

Judy was born on October 25, 1927 in Highland, Kansas to Robert and Cecil (Gibson) Simmons. She was a lifelong resident of Doniphan County and a homemaker.

She is a member of the First Baptist Church of Troy and Troy Lions Club.

Judy married Elmer J. “Buddy” Ross on December 28, 1947.&nbsp; He preceded her in death on February 25, 2007.&nbsp; She was also preceded by a son, Marvin Ross and seven siblings.

He was born August 12, 1961 in Maryville, MO.

Russell married Stephanie Riche August 26, 1994; they celebrated 25 years of marriage.

He proudly served in the Army/Army National Guard and did his basic training and AIT at Fort Benning, Georgia.

Russell was a State Rodeo Champion in Tarkio, Missouri. He loved being outdoors; grilling and spending time poolside with his beloved family. Russell was a free spirit who was fiercely independent and loved by many. His grandchildren adored him and called him Pop.

He was preceded in death by his father, Jim Ray.

Robert C. "Bob" Maxwell, 88, passed away at home on December 18, 2019 completing a life well-lived!

He was the devoted husband of Alice (Kilkenny) Maxwell for over 61 years. She survives of the home.

Born February 10, 1931 to Clarence and Helen (Smygal) Maxwell, he resided in St. Joseph his entire lifetime, except for his time spent proudly serving his country.

Bob enlisted in the Marine Corps in January, 1951 and went overseas in August of that year to serve in the Korean War. He was assigned to B Company, 1st Engineer Battalion, attached to the 5th Marines. While there he was sent to a Korean Marine Corps unit to develop an anti-personnel mine field in front of their newly established line.&nbsp; His unit trucked up the south rim of the Punchbowl and while there, he witnessed the first Marine helicopter “Operation Wind Mill”. Bob was honorably discharged with the rank of Sergeant following the war.

Bob was employed as a sign painter and graphic artist for many years by Roderick Advertising.&nbsp; His talents included the pattern design and painting of all kinds of exterior signage, application of gold “leaf”, plus designs for neon tubing signage.&nbsp; Earlier in his career, he also worked locally at Neocraft Sign Company and in Kansas City, for TWA painting airplanes!&nbsp; Later in life, he established a successful silk-screen printing business for many years.

Bob was a 32nd Degree Scottish Rite Mason and a Legion of Honor member of the Moila Shrine.&nbsp; He also belonged to VFW Post 1668 and American Legion Post 359.

The father of Leo (Terri, Wayne (Fabiola, and Lynn Smith (Scott, he is also survived by eight grandchildren: Brian Maxwell (Michaela, Zachary Maxwell, Cambrie Höglund (Samuel, Alex Smith, Lauren Le (Tyler, Amy Smith, Hannah and Adam Maxwell plus two great grandsons, Trent and Dalton Maxwell. He was the brother of Myrtle Holland and William Maxwell and the late Audrey Woods and Marvin Donald Maxwell.

Funeral services 1:30 PM, Monday, December 23rd at Heaton-Bowman-Smith &amp; Sidenfaden Chapel. &nbsp;&nbsp;Interment with military honors will follow at Mount Olivet Cemetery.

The family will receive friends 2:00 to 5:00 PM, Sunday, December 22nd also at our Chapel.

She was born July 22, 1928 in St. Joseph, Missouri, daughter of Gladys &amp; David Garish. Darlene attended Myrtle Miller School. She loved volunteering and spending her time helping others. She also enjoyed bird watching and drawing. She was a member of St. James Catholic Church. 

Preceding her in death are her father, David Franklin Garish, mother, Gladys Garish, sister, Beverly Joy Palmes, brother, Roland Garish, brother, David Garish, Jr..

 She is survived by niece, Sherry Swanson of Dearborn, MO, nephew, Rodney Palmes of Wichita, KS, and several great nieces and great nephews. 

Ms. Garish has been cremated under the care of Rupp Funeral Home. The family will receive friends at a later date. Memorials are requested to the Alzheimer's Association.

Katherine graduated from Sumner High School in Kansas City, KS. She worked for the St. Joseph State Hospital for 30 years in the food service department as a supervisor.

Katherine married Charles Henry Taylor, Sr. November 26, 1956; he preceded her in death October 3, 1968.

She was baptized and a member of First Street Baptist Church on King Hill Avenue.

Katherine was multi-talented and enjoyed gardening, cooking, sewing, crocheting and her ultimate enjoyment, spending time with her grandchildren.

She was also preceded in death by her parents, Viley and Mamie (Williams) Johnson; brother, Harold Williams; sisters, Delores Lewis and Hazel May Williams; and longtime companion, Richard Thomas

Ryan L. Frakes, 49, St. Joseph, Missouri, passed away Sunday, December 15, 2019, at Mosaic Life Care.

Ryan married Michelle Dewey August 13, 1994.

He graduated from Central High School in 1988. After receiving his associate degree Ryan had several drafting jobs, the latest was working for CST Industries.

He was a long-standing and regular attendee at Grace Evangelical Church. Ryan loved volunteering with Vacation Bible School and dressing up as Chewbacca and Tank.

He passed his passion for the outdoors and love of soccer and fishing on to his daughters; he thoroughly enjoyed teaching them how to play the game and fish. Ryan played golf whenever he had a chance. He was a huge Chiefs and Sooners fan; he even named his beloved English bulldogs, Boomer Sooner and Vada May. Fourth of July was always a huge event for him; buying several fireworks for the entire family to enjoy.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Steven Frakes, Mary (Hamby) Jones; sister, Rachel Olson; and brother, Jason Waltemath.

She was born July 28, 1948 in St. Joseph, MO, daughter of the late Doris and Allen Lofton. She graduated from Lafayette High School and besides being a homemaker, she was also a caregiver for the elderly at Benders Home Care, Merrill and Interserve. She enjoyed crocheting, bingo, and collecting angels. Mary was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. 

She was preceded in death by husband, Jimmy Bradford Burns, her parents, and a brother, Robert Allen Lofton. 

Survivors include, three sons, Rex (Georgia) Burns, Saint Joseph, MO, Ryan (Kimberly) Burns, Gower, MO, and Rory (Ragan) Burns, Saint Joseph, MO, grandchildren: Derek, Dalton, Bryson, Jason, Gabrielle, and Dorian, and great-granddaughter, Isabelle.

He was born October 16, 1964 in St. Joseph, son of the late Janice &amp; Carl Crockett. He was a Mechanic who enjoyed working on cars. Rusty was preceded in death by his parents, and a daughter, Jody Kay. 

He is survived by four daughters, Laci Torres-Lopez, Lexi Lynn Tavares, Leslie Marie Ramarez, and Gina Calloway, and 14 grandchildren, sister, Cathy (George) Blake, Elwood, KS, brothers, Carl Crockett, Jr. and John Crockett, numerous and nephews.

Mosaic Life Care currently displays several pieces of his art he donated over the last few years. He will be missed and remembered as a creative, kind, and generous man.Don was preceded in death by his father, Don K.
