

"Junior" Edward Lee Meeks Jr. 78, of St. Joseph, Missouri, passed away Sunday, January 12, 2020 at his home. 

He was born February 16, 1941 in St. Joseph, MO, and graduated from Central High School class of 1959 He married Nora Shirey on April 8, 1961 and she survives of the home. He retired as a Union Mill Rite from Local 1529 Kansas City, MO., he was also the owner &amp; operator of the Hickory Tavern from 1982-2012, and the Meeks Fish Market, he was also a Commercial Fisherman. He enjoyed fishing and hunting and was a Christian. 

Junior was preceded in death by father, Edward Lee Meeks Sr., mother, Jane Alice Brown, and grandson, Edward Lee Meeks IV.

Survivors include, wife, Nora Meeks of the home, daughter, Brenda Doldt, Saint Joseph, son, Edward Lee Meeks III, St. Joseph, grandchildren: Tiffany (Cory) Smith, St. Joseph, Brandon (Jami) Doldt, Savannah, Nicole (Colt) Casselman, Kansas City, brothers; Harold (Kathy) Stufflebean, Blue Springs, and Gary (Sharon) Stufflebean, Parkville, MO, sisters: Linda (John) Ingram, St. Joseph, MO, and Robin Branam, Independence, MO, and five great grandchildren.

Dolly Lonas Thrift, while surrounded by family, went to be with the Lord January 12th, 2020.

Dolly was the youngest of three children, born in Manassas, VA to Leonard L. &amp; Margaret (Chocklette) Lonas on July 9, 1932. She lived a full, active, and vibrant 87 years of life. While living in Manassas, she graduated from Osburne High School in 1947 and attended Longwood University.

She met and married 1st Lieutenant William (Bill) Thrift (USAF) in 1954. Dolly enjoyed living in Germany where daughter Peggy was born in 1956, Washington D.C. where daughter Terry was born in 1960, Alaska where they survived the devastating earthquake of 1964, New York and Oklahoma before settling in Tupelo, MS in 1970.

Dolly worked for Lee County Chancery Clerk for 32 years prior to retirement. In 2012 Dolly and Bill moved to Saint Joseph, MO to be near daughter, Terry Hurst. Dolly was a proud member of the Daughters of the American Revolution. She was a lifelong avid weekly Bridge player. She was a member of First Baptist Church in Tupelo, and Ashland United Methodist in Saint Joseph.

Dolly was preceded in death by parents Leonard and Margaret, brothers Leonard and Joe, husband Bill, and daughter Peggy Greer. Survivors include daughter Terry Hurst (Mike); grandchildren Ginny Prillhart (James, Jeremy Tate, Laura Nold (Austin, Sarah Abbott (Andrew, Anna Plackemeier (Seth, and 10 great-grandchildren.

Dolly cherished her family and loved spending time with all of them. Dolly had genuine southern charm and never met a stranger. Though her earthly life began in Virginia and ended in Missouri, she was quick to tell you Tupelo, Mississippi was where she called home.

Services will be held in Tupelo, MS at Holland Funeral Home. Visitation will be Friday January 17th during the hours of 5:00 to 7:00 PM. Funeral services will be Saturday January 18th at 10:00 AM. William L. Evans, Sr., 80 of St. Joseph, passed away January 10, 2020.

Born September 15, 1939 in Leon, Iowa, to the late Andrew Evans and Kathlyn Sandy Funk; he attended school in Des Moines, Iowa. William joined the United States Air Force and served in the Vietnam War. After serving, he moved to Missouri where he was in sales until he retired. William was a member of the NRA, the American Legion Post #359, and a former member of the Northwest Missouri Street Rod Association.

William is survived by his wife, Loretta; daughter, Linda McCoy; sons, Timothy Evans, Jeffrey Moutray, Eric Moutray; cousin, Vicky Torres; five grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren. &nbsp;&nbsp;

Preceded in death; his parents; sons, William Evans, Jr. and Edward Evans; daughter, Christina Moutray.

Janice Lee Hochenauer 78, of St. Joseph, MO passed away Thursday, January 9, 2020 at her home. 

She was born January 4, 1942 in St. Joseph, MO, daughter of the late Geneva "Eleanor" and Johnny Hochenauer. She graduated from Benton High School in 1959, and worked as a flora designer at Myers Watson Florist, and most recently retired from Kohls. 

Janice was preceded in death by her parents. 

Survivors include son, David (Teresa) Bobela and their son Matthew Bobela, of Saint Joseph, MO, son, Paul (Melissa) Farris of Kansas City, MO, and his daughter, Hannah. 

The family will receive friends from 10:00 AM to 10:30 AM Wednesday, with a Rosary to be recited at 10:30 am, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday January 15, 2020, all at St. Patrick Catholic Church, Father Richard Rocha Celebrant. She worked at Big Smith, H.D.Lee, TEVA, and Uniland. Phyllis enjoyed sewing, spending time with her grandchildren, and babysitting. She was a member of Wallace Christian Church. 

Phyllis was preceded in death by her parents, sister, Virginia Lee Grippando, brother, David Dennis, sister, Donna Dennis, brothers-in-law, Earl Vandgrift and Ronnie Parton, and great niece, Baylee Martin.

She was born August 21, 1943 in Cosby, Missouri, daughter of Eva &amp; CW Amos. She married William "Bill" Hunt, and they shared together 50 years. She graduated from Savannah High School. Sue worked at the VA Hospital in Leavenworth as a LPN. She enjoyed cooking, gardening and bird watching. 

Sue was preceded in death by her husband, William "Bill" Hunt, father, CW Amos, and mother, Eva Amos. 

She is survived by sons, Ken (Kristin) Nold of St. Joseph, and Sheldon Nold of Fort Campbell, KY, 6 grandchildren, Taylor, Christopher, KaLeigh, Joshua, Dustin and Jordan. 

She will be cremated under the direction of the Rupp Funeral Home. Memorials are requested to the Friends of the Animal Shelter, St. Joseph.

Martha was preceded in death by her father, Ernest Baugh, mother, Bonnie Baugh, brothers, David, Wiley, Earl, &amp; Patrick, and sisters, June Melton and Janice Baugh. 

She is survived by sister, Faye Griffin of Detroit, MI, brothers, Steve Baugh, Miles (Susan) Bradford, Mark Baugh, and Phillip Baugh, brother-in-law, Robert Melton, and sister-in-law, Myra Baugh.

Jo married Ronald Thompson, Sr. on December 24, 1992.&nbsp;

Jo was of the Baptist faith.&nbsp; She enjoyed fishing, bird watching, camping and loved to dance.&nbsp; She enjoyed her wine gatherings with friends but her most precious time was spent with her family.&nbsp;

In addition to her parents, Jo is preceded in death by brother Harley Freeman, Jr. and son Daniel Thompson.&nbsp;

Ruth Mary Kragel, 93, of St. Joseph, formerly of Corning, Iowa, passed away peacefully in her sleep on Tuesday, January 7, 2020.

Ruth was born on April 1, 1926 in Denison, Iowa to the late Edward and Teresa (Herbers) Dozler.&nbsp; She was raised on the family farm.&nbsp; She was a 1953 graduate of Denison High School.&nbsp;&nbsp;

She married the love of her life, James Frederick Kragel, on August 1, 1949.&nbsp; He passed away on September 4, 2014.&nbsp; Together, they enjoyed traveling, camping, playing cards and watching their&nbsp; sons play sports.&nbsp; Ruth and James owned and operated the LaConne Motel in Corning, Iowa.&nbsp;

Ruth was a devout Catholic with strong faith and a generous spirit.&nbsp; She was a member of Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish.&nbsp; She was also a member of the St. Patrick's Church and Ladies Guild in Corning, Iowa as well as St. Rosa Lima Parish in Denison, Iowa.&nbsp; She was a tireless volunteer for all of her church homes.&nbsp;

In addition to her parents and husband, Ruth is preceded in death by son Darrell Kragel; sister Alice Dozler-Holst and brother Paul Dozler.&nbsp;

Survivors:&nbsp; sons, Don Kragel (Jeanette, Dennis Kragel (Lori, David Kragel (Sharlene); grandchildren, Summer Kragel, Sunnie Kragel, Alex Kragel (Amanda, Ryan Kragel (Audra); great-grandchildren, Carson and Connor Kragel and Ava, Anna and Abigail Kragel; brother Earl Dozler (Dorothy).&nbsp;

Linda Gayle Wattenbarger, 76, of St. Joseph, MO passed away Monday, January 6, 2020, at home with her family.

Linda was born on February 21, 1943, in St. Joseph, MO to Lloyd and Avis Wagers.

Linda was married to David "Dave" Wattenbarger on December 28, 1961. They had 2 sons Eric, and Ty Wattenbarger, and one Daughter, Kris Wattenbarger.

Linda graduated from Central High School, then attended and graduated beauty school. She then married her husband&nbsp; and moved to Texas while he was stationed with the Army as Military Police. She did hair out of their trailer, had their first son, and returned to St. Joseph.

Linda was preceded in death by her husband, her parents; sister, Saralyn Wagers, and daughter Kris Wattenbarger.

Survivors include: sons, Eric Wattenbarger and Ty Wattenbarger; granddaughter, Kalee Wattenbarger; and grandson, Tobyn Wattenbarger.&nbsp;

The family wishes to thank the staff of&nbsp; AseraCare Hospice.

Services 10:30 AM Saturday at Heaton Bowman Smith. &nbsp;Interment Memorial Park Cemetery.

Kenneth was born on January 17, 1942 in Atchison, KS to Kenneth and Anna (Pike) Jenkins. He married Beverly Suharto on February 15, 1961, and she survives at the home. Kenneth enjoyed hunting, fishing, boating and camping. Kenny also enjoyed going to his friend Burt’s house from 5 to 7pm every day.

Kenneth is survived by his wife, sons, Todd (Shannon) Jenkins, Atchison, KS, Thad (Robin) Jenkins, St. Joseph, MO, daughter, Teresa (Samuel) Abbott, Kansas City, MO and a sister, Ginger Grider, Halstead, KS. He is preceded into death by his parents and granddaughter Jessica Ann Jenkins.

Stephanie Marie Otwell, 57, of St. Joseph, passed away Wednesday January 8, 2020 at her home in St. Joseph. 

She was born April 17, 1962 in St. Joseph, Missouri daughter of Frances &amp; Robert Dittemore. Stephanie attended Benton High School. Most recently she worked at All American Cab as a Dispatcher. Her hobbies included watching racing and spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren.. She was a member of Lighthouse Church in Fillmore. 

Stephanie was preceded in death by her father, Robert S. Dittemore, Sr., mother, Frances (Burke) Cox, step-father, Glen Cox, sisters, Kathleen Homan, and Carolatta Townsand. 

She is survived by son, Brad (Jennifer) Dittemore of St. Joseph, brother, Jim (Julie) Pierce of St. Joseph, brother, Robert Dittemore, Jr. of St. Joseph, grandchildren, Schyler (Jessica) and Mariah, great-grandchildren, Naomi Berry, Bailey Berry, Levi Parker, Hunter Parker, Veronica Arrendoe and Allie Arrendoe and several nieces and nephews. 

She will be cremated under the direction of the Rupp Funeral Home. Inurnment to take place at a later date.

On Wednesday, January 1st, 2020, Don L. Sherman, loving father and grandfather passed away peacefully at the age of 76.

Don was born on February 28th, 1943. He was raised by his grandparents in St. Joseph, MO. After school he joined the army for a brief period before being honorably discharged. He later married Marilynn Nolan and they had four children.&nbsp; Don ran a successful business for many years in St. Joseph until he retired in his early 60’s. He was a life long supporter of the Leukemia Society and UNICEF. He developed a passion for watching sports in his retirement years and loved football. He was an exceptionally intelligent person who loved reading and had a very quick wit. He was always fun to be around and loved to make people smile. He truly loved life and valued the joy that friends and family brought him.

Don is survived by his three sons; Mike Sherman, Brian Sherman, D Byron, and granddaughter, Lindsay Sherman.

Friends and family whose lives were touched by Don are welcome to attend a graveside funeral service that will be held on Friday, January 10th at 11:00 AM at Memorial Cemetery in Saint Joseph, MO.

Fayetta Mizell Cassity, 78, passed away January 4, 2020.

Fayetta was born January 9, 1941 to Charles Fay and Ella Amanda (Vincent) Mizell. She graduated from Faucett High School in 1959 where she was a cheer-leader and played basketball. After graduation, she enrolled in Caster's Beauty Academy and maintained a 50 year career as a hair stylist.

In 1964, she married Lonnie J. Cassity. Her one daughter, Kelley Ann Steele gave her the joy of her life-grandson, Sawyer Dale Marlay. Kelley made her very proud by not only becoming a registered nurse, but also becoming a nurse practitioner.

She loved camping at Table Rock Lake, waterskiing, boating and was a member of the St. Joseph Boat &amp; Yacht Club.

Fayetta loved to socialize by working out with girlfriends and going to the casino.&nbsp; She was fun-loving and a joy to be around and loved by all.

Survivors: &nbsp;daughter, Kelley of St. Joseph and grandson Sawyer of Springfield, MO; sister Delorise (John) Sights; brother Vincent (Gail) Mizell; brother-in-law Pat (Susan) Cassity; &nbsp;nieces, Dana Collins and Dawn Laderoute; nephews, Gary Sights, Alan Mizell, and Nathan Mizell; &nbsp;greats, Rylie Collins, Alex Laderoute, Dawsen Mizell, and Emma Mizell.

She was born July 30, 1927 in Miller, Nebraska.

Ruth married Leo Galloway June 6, 1954; he preceded her in death February 14, 2012.

She received her Bachelor of Education degree at Kearney State Teacher’s College in Kearney, Nebraska and Doctor of Philosophy from Texas Tech University in 1972. She taught English for 27 years at Texas Tech and Missouri Western State College.

Ruth was a member of 1st Baptist Church of Savannah, Phi Beta Kappa, and Delta Kappa Gamma Society.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Leo; parents, Allen and Lenna (Edwards) Dunbar; sister, Dorothy Moore and brother, Joseph Dunbar.

Survivors include Wayne Hilder and family, David (Leigh Porter, Rebecca, Kevin, Kay, Todd Hilder; other nieces and nephews, Jacque Triplett (Rick, Jan Kauk (Bruce, John Bennett (MaryLynn) Sherry Hubbard (Perry); numerous great-nieces and nephews.

Born February 7, 1940, in Chicago, ILL., she was preceded in death by parents, Robert and Helen (Miller) White.

A graduate of Lafayette High School and Park College, Parkville, MO. Carol was employed by a publishing company and law firm in New York.

Survivors: cousins, Dan Munzing, Vancouver, Washington, Joan Byers, Estes Park, Colorado, Amy Stephens, Westminster, Colorado, Marilyn (Bob) Lettimore, Longmont, Colorado; and friends, Alice and Larry McVicker, St. Joseph.

Carol Florence Bertol, 79, St. Joseph, died Thursday, January 2, 2020.Born February 7, 1940, in Chicago, ILL., she was preceded in death by parents, Robert and Helen (Miller) White.A graduate of Lafayette High School and Park College, Parkville, MO. Carol was employed by a publishing company and law firm in New York.Survivors: cousins, Dan Munzing, Vancouver, Washington, Joan Byers, Estes Park, Colorado, Amy Stephens, Westminster, Colorado, Marilyn (Bob) Lettimore, Longmont, Colorado; and friends, Alice and Larry McVicker, St. Joseph.Inurnment: Mount Auburn Cemetery, St. Joseph. Carole Florence Bertol  1940 - 2020

Bill Crawford, 83, of Asbury, Missouri, passed away peacefully at home on January 6, 2020.

Bill Crawford was born at Methodist Hospital, in St. Joseph, Missouri, on June 25, 1936.&nbsp; He was the only child of Reed and Mildred Crawford.&nbsp;

The first three years of Bill’s life, the family lived on a farm north of Fillmore, where Reed was a farmer and Mildred taught at the Gravel Wall Country School.&nbsp; In 1939, they moved to Savannah, where Reed went to work for the R.E.A. securing easements signing up farmers for electricity provided by the R.E.A.

&nbsp;Bill attended Savannah schools and graduated in 1954.&nbsp; He was very active in sports and was the proud recipient of the Chard Award. Bill then went on to college at Northwest Missouri State, where he graduated in 1958.&nbsp;

Bill then moved to Kansas City, where he worked in the insurance industry for the next 11 years.&nbsp; In 1969, Bill moved back to Savannah so he could raise his two children, Mark and Kerri, in the Savannah area.&nbsp; Both Mark and Kerri graduated from Savannah High School.

In 1970, Bill bought the property on the north side of the curve on 71 Highway, where he built The Country Store, a liquor store and Snax-N-Stuff Restaurant (now Jesse’s Last Stop). He then moved to Kansas, where he became city manager and grant writer for several small cities. It was in Kansas that he met and married Evelyn, with whom he enjoyed 25 years of marriage.

Survivors include his wife, Evelyn; his children: Mark and Nancy Crawford, Kerri and Paul Jewett, Jason and Paula Kermashek, and Lisa and Damon Mattson; his grandchildren: Katie and Adam Vanderpool, Hunter Jewett and Norah Kermashek, as well as a great grandson, Jackson Vanderpool. Preceding Bill in death were his parents, Reed and Mildred, and all his aunts and uncles. Bill was also a member of First Christian Church,&nbsp; Savannah Masonic Lodge, and Moila Shriners.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Transportation funds of Mirza Shriners or Moila Shriners.

&nbsp;Funeral services will be held, Thursday, &nbsp;January 9, 2020, at 1:00 p.m. at Heaton-Bowman-Smith Savannah Chapel.&nbsp; Burial will follow in the Fillmore Cemetery.&nbsp; Visitation will be from 11:00 a.m. until service time at the chapel on Thursday.

Scott Butner, 51, St. Joseph, Missouri, passed away Monday, January 6, 2020.

He was born May 19, 1968 in St. Joseph, Missouri.

Scott was a graduate of Central High School Class of 1986. He was a gifted athlete and excelled in football at the High School and College level.

He proudly served in the U.S. Navy and worked for many years at the V.F.W. while he lived in Alabama.

Scott loved his Chiefs, Alabama and his dog Casey. He loved people and never knew a stranger.

Survivors include parents, Ann Bosch (Steve, Dan Butner (Ramona); sister, Danielle Flowers (Conn); brothers, Mark Butner, Lyle Shaver; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts, uncles and friends.

Scott Butner  1968 - 2020

Doris Winslow, 74, of St. Joseph, passed away Sunday, January 5, 2020 at Mosaic Life Care in St. Joseph. 

She was born February 15, 1945 in Alamo, TN, daughter of Elberta and Jesse Hughes. She attended Benton High School. Doris married Elvin Winslow on May 13, 1993. She worked at Silgan Container and retired after nearly 30 years. She enjoyed fishing, was a longtime avid bowler and also enjoyed quilting/knitting. Doris would knit hats and scarves and pass them out to school children in the community . She was also active member at Grace Evangelical Church and loved to volunteer. Doris will be remembered for her love for others, and will continue to help others as she was an organ donor. 

Doris was preceded in death by father, Jesse Hughes, mother, Elberta Hughes, great-grandson, Simon Turner, brothers, Bill Hughes and TB Hughes, sisters, Betty Hoover, Eddie May Mace and Margaret Lewis. 

Survivors include, husband, Elvin Winslow of the home, daughters, Belinda (Randy) Gann of St. Joseph, Pam (Mike) Swift of Mt. Washington, KY, Sherri Spaeth of Platte City, MO, and step-daughter, Merihelen (Andy) Markt of Oregon, MO, sister, Jettie Cline, 12 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Winslow has been cremated under the care of Rupp Funeral Home. A Memorial Service will be 11:00 am, Thursday, January 9, 2020 at Grace Evangelical Church, Pastor David Ernst officiating, The family will receive friends from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM on Thursday at the Grace Evangelical Church. Memorials are requested to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.

Lawrence "Larry" Dean Dawson 69, of Platte City, Missouri, passed away Sunday, January 5, 2020 at the North Kansas Hospital. 

He was born November 15, 1950 in St. Joseph, MO, son of the late Elmer and Lucille Dawson. He graduated from Central HS and Missouri Western State University with a BS in Business. He married Paulette Kingsley on April 1, 1972 in St. Joseph. Larry was a professional salesman, world class raconteur and modern day genius. He had a infectious laugh, loved life, was always there for his family, and never knew a stranger. Larry enjoyed being in the outdoors, fishing, hunting, and was a member of the Bigelow Big Bucks Club. He had a gift for building, fixing, and modifying anything. But most of all he was a loving husband, father, grandfather and friend, who will be missed by all. 

Larry was preceded in death by his parents, and a brother, Cecil Dawson. 

Survivors include, wife, Paulette Dawson of the home, son, Nick (Patti) Dawson, St. Petersburg, FL, daughter, Andrea (Jon) Miller, Tulsa, OK, granddaughters, Grace &amp; Mary Miller, and brother, Kenny (Carol) Dawson of Eugene, OR, and his dog Muffy.

Funeral services: 11:00 am, Saturday, January 11, 2020 at Horigan Chapel, Pastor Brady Testorff officiating. Charlene married Robert Lee Harris August 27, 1955. He survives of the home.

She was a driver for the Oats Bus and School District.

Charlene was a member of Midwest Camping Club, Paul’s RV Camping Club, Good Jo Jam Camping Club.

She was preceded in death by her daughter, Denise Harris; parents, Aubrey and Madeline (Marriott) Silvey; brother, TL Silvey (Arlene).
