Vernon J. Carter, 91, of Derby, Kansas, formerly of Troy, passed away peacefully Sunday morning May 31, 2020 at home with his daughter at his side.

Mr. Carter was born November 15, 1928 in Dodge City, Kansas to Mary(White) and F.F. Carter. He lived in Colorado for many years and came to Troy in 1942 where he graduated from Troy High School in 1946. Immediately following graduation he enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Forces. While in the USAAF he was stationed in Texas, Guam and the Philippines where he was on the Base’s track team. He ran in the Service competitions in Tokyo, Japan and other locations winning several placement trophies. His daily work was to assist in publishing the Base newspaper. He reached the Rank of Sergeant while in the Service.

When he returned from the Service he went to work for Armour &amp; Company where he worked for over 32 years until they closed. He then went to work for Peachtree Doors and Windows until the operation returned to Georgia. He then worked for Ag. Processing until he retired.

After returning from the Service, he married his high school sweetheart Kathryn A. Cummings at the Community of Christ (Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints) on February 3, 1950. He was a devoted father who worked hard to meet the needs of his family. They enjoyed 69 years and 7 months together. Good with his hands he could fix anything from clocks to tube TV’s and anything around the house. He studied the Bible extensively especially the Old Testament and at Church taught an Old Testament class.

Vernon was preceded in death by his wife Kathryn. His survivors include- daughter Mary Kathryn (Michael) Clarady all of Derby, Kansas; his brother in law Lyle Cummings, niece Marla Kay Cummings and nephew Robert (Bob) Cummings all of Troy, Kansas; great nephews Shane (Heather) Peden of Wichita, Kansas Clint Peden of Troy, Kansas, and Brady (Mikalla) Cummings of Los Angeles, California; great niece Blair (Brandon) Geiger of Highland, Kansas; great-great nieces and nephew Taylor, Bennett and Brittie.

A celebration of Vernon’s life will be held Thursday June 4, 2020 with visitation at 9 a.m. and services following at 10 a.m. at the Harman Rohde Funeral Home in Troy. Burial will follow at Mt Olive Cemetery in Troy.

She was born at Boyero, Colorado, July 28, 1941, one of four children born to Glenn William and Lena Alberta Summers Welton and graduated from Grainfield, Kansas High School.&nbsp;

She was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church of Sabetha, and Auxiliary of Homer-White Post #66, Hiawatha American Legion.&nbsp; Wilma enjoyed her family, and cooking.

Wilma married Gerald Joseph “Jerry” Geist in 1963 in Grainfield.&nbsp; When the boys were growing up and attending school, the family moved to Horton prior to moving to Hiawatha where they graduated high school.&nbsp; In later years, she moved to Sabetha to be near Jerry and Marty who were in the nursing home there.&nbsp; She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Jerry in 2009, and son Martin in 2007.

Survivors include her son Anthony Geist of Sabetha, grandchildren:&nbsp; Dylan, Cory, Jordie, Karley, two sisters Fern Mader (Lonnie) of Great Bend, KS, Judy Reinecker (Steve) of Smyrna, TN, brother David Welton (Debbie) of Topeka, KS.

Outdoor funeral mass will be celebrated at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church parking lot in Sabetha, 10 a.m. Tuesday, June 9, with Father Jaime Zarse will officiate.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;SOCIAL DISTANCING MUST BE OBSERVED BY STAYING IN VEHICLES.

Sylvia Knoller Samuels, age 88, passed away peacefully on May 31, 2020 in Atchison, Kansas. 

She was born in Brooklyn, New York on April 18, 1932 and lovingly raised by the Greenfield family of Bronx, New York where she was especially close to her older adoptive sisters Faye, Nettie and Phoebe. In 1949, Sylvia graduated from James Monroe High School and immediately entered the work force as a typist and stenographer for accountants and lawyers. During her early adult life, she enjoyed vacationing at resorts mostly in upstate New York with a close-knit group of girlfriends as well as continuing her French education through night classes at Queens College, City University of New York. In 1964 Sylvia married Paul Samuels in Bronx, New York and eventually living in East Windsor, New Jersey where they raised their daughter Gail. Sylvia and Paul then moved to Burke, Virginia in 1986 where they amicably separated and eventually divorced. During her 32 years in Burke, Sylvia continued to work for various agencies both private and public; however, her most rewarding position was with Fairfax County where she advocated for the transportation needs of disabled persons. Sylvia also indulged her love of travel by taking trips with tour groups all over the United States and South America. In 2017, at age 85, Sylvia took the trip of her dreams to France accompanied by her daughter. In 2018, Sylvia decided to move to Kansas to be near her daughter. Sylvia was preceded in death by her former husband Paul Samuels and her son-in-law Richard Blaustein and is survived by her daughter Gail Samuels Blaustein. &nbsp;John Francis Cortez 85, of Saint Joseph, MO passed away Tuesday, June 2, 2020 at his home. 

He was born March 28, 1935 in Horton, KS, son of the late Francisca and Donaciano "Donacio" Cortez. He graduated from Horton High School, and married Nadine Rocha on October 20, 1956 at Holy Rosary Church in St. Joseph, MO. He was a very talented musician, who loved praying the rosary, playing the guitar, and looking forward to Sunday family dinners. He was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church. 

John was preceded in death by his parents, wife, son, Felix Cortez, daughter, Lupe Cortez-Bergonzoni, grandson, Sean Cortez, brothers, Bernard and Tony Cortez, and sister, Isabel Cortez. 

Survivors include his children, Victor (Lori, Jerry (Kelly, Michael (Jaime, Regina (Mark) Richey, Michelle Cortez, and Linda Cortez, all of St. Joseph, MO, brother, Fermin (Vicky) Cortez of Rock Island, IL, sisters, Rita (Carlos) Vasquez of Antioch, CA, Juanita (Ervin) Kimmi of Horton, KS, and Julia Rocha of St. Joseph, MO, 18 grandchildren, 21 great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Gilbert Corrales, Sr., 82, St. Joseph, Missouri, formerly of San Antonio, Texas, passed away Tuesday, June 2, 2020.

He was born May 16, 1938 in San Antonio, Texas to Candelario and Benigna (Campa) Corrales.

Gilbert married Cristina Espinoza October 9, 1971.

He proudly served in the U.S. Army and later in the U.S. Air Force Reserves. Gilbert retired from the City of San Antonio, Texas where he worked as a wastewater operator.

He was preceded in death by his parents; siblings, Esperanza Avila, Joe Corrales, Antonio Corrales, Frank Corrales, Consuelo Gonzales, Benigna Corrales and Pedro Corrales.

Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Cristina; children, Yvonne Smith (Kevin, Gilbert Corrales, Jr. (Clae); grandchildren, Aliana, Sean, Gilbert III, Addison; brothers, Johnnie and Candelario, Jr. Corrales; numerous extended family and friends.

&nbsp; Jeanie Newton, 85, St. Joseph, Missouri, passed away Monday, June 1, 2020.

Jeanie married Robert Vernon Newton, Sr. January 1953; he preceded her in death June 27, 1997.

She was a kind, loving woman that adored spending time with her grandchildren.

Jeanie enjoyed gardening, Chinese checkers, sewing and crossword puzzles.

She was also preceded in death by her parents, Aaron and Margery (Gorton) Powell, and brother, Roger Powell.

Survivors include son, Robert “Bob” Newton, Jr.; daughter, Lori Garber; grandchildren, Kelly Garber, Tracy Garber, Chris Garber (Mercedes, Delaney Garber (Drew); great-grandchildren, Kendyll, Mallory, Luna, Zoey, Everleigh; brother, Aaron “Lee” Powell; numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family.

&nbsp; Floyd Jay Sutton, 93, Atchison KS died on Tuesday, June 2, 2020 at the Gran Villas, Atchison, KS.

Graveside services and burial will be at 11:30 AM on Friday, June 5, 2020 at the Evergreen Cemetery, Effingham, KS with Rev. Matt Broxtermann officiating. The family will receive friends from 10:00 to 11:00 am at the Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home. Memorial contributions are suggested to the Shiners’ Children’s Hospital or the First Christian Church (Property and Grounds/Building repair and Maintenance) and may be sent in care of the funeral home. Floyd was employed at ATSF Railroad as a Engine-Foreman Conductor from 1947-1988. He served as a Boy Scout Comitteeman, and coached as little league baseball team. Floyd was a member of the First Christian Church where he served many years as a Deacon and President of the Friendship Sunday School Class. He and his wife Doris enjoyed Square Dancing with the local square dancing club here and also in Mesa, AZ where they wintered for many years. They loved to travel and have visited many foreign countries. Floyd was a Past Master of the Masonic Lodge # 158, and a Charter member and Past President of the Hi-12 Club, a Life member of the American Legion and VFW. He was married to Doris Coleen Higley on Oct. 10, 1948 at the First Christian Church, Topeka, KS. She survives. Additional survivors include two sons Gary E. (Mary Jo) Sutton, Topeka, KS and Jeffrey (Judy) Sutton, Cedar Falls, IA, five grandchildren Ashley McCaffery, Topeka, KS, Dustin (Jessica) Sutton, Parkville, MO, Courtney (Josh) Marchbank, Kansas City, MO, Amelia and Clarissa Sutton, Des Moines, IA. Eight great grandchildren, Cullen, Finn, Patrick and Breccan McCaffery, Teagan and Kellan Marchbank, and Isabella and Milan Sutton.

She was born April 10, 1928 in Crane, MO, daughter of the late Bernice and Roy E. Whitten. She worked at Whitaker Cable, and Sherwood Medical, and enjoyed reading, crocheting, reading the paper, traveling, and working in her flower garden.

Arlen Francis Ruhnke, 67, went home to Jesus on Friday, May 29, 2020 at his home in Long Island, KS. 

Arlen was born on June 12, 1952 to Douglas and Florence (Albers) Ruhnke in Troy, KS where he lived most of his life. He graduated from Troy High School in 1970 and Missouri Western State College in 1974. After college he worked several jobs including working for the REA as a lineman, worked for his dad at the NAPA store, built houses and was a rural mail carrier for 26 years, and ran his own farm north of Troy. After his retirement, he moved to Long Island, KS in 2013. He married Barbara Prawl on October 22, 1977. They have been married for 42 years. Together they raised 4 children. His family was his life and teaching his children and grandchildren to know Jesus was most important to him. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Troy and the Norton Christian Church in Norton, KS where he was involved with the youth programs. He leaves behind a legacy of the Gospel of Christ. 

Arlen is preceded in death by his parents, Douglas and Florence Ruhnke, his brother Wayne Ruhnke, an unborn child, and an unborn grandchild. 

Survivors include his wife, Barb of the home, son Daniel and wife Selena, St. Joseph, MO, daughter Corinne and husband Clint, of Long Island, son Aaron and wife Jessica, of Topeka, KS, son Jay and wife Jennifer, of Las Vegas, NV, a sister Rosa Madison of Troy, KS, 13 grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews, friends and relatives. 

A memorial service will be held at the Norton Christian Church, Norton, KS on Monday, June 1 at 10:30am. A graveside service will be held in Bendena, KS at Moray Cemetery on Wednesday June 3 at 1pm. Witte on Oct. 12, 1950 at the Carol Baptist Church, Atchison KS. He preceded her in death on Jan. 10, 2018. Woodrow Wilson Shepherd, passed away surrounded by family on May 31, 2020. 

He was born on October 1, 1928 in St. Joseph, MO, son of Robert Lee and Eula Mae Shepherd. He graduated from Shepherd School, Benton High School, and St. Joseph Junior College. Woodrow served in the Army in 1952-1954. Woodrow dedicated his entire life to his family and farming. He treasured all of his nieces and nephews, treating each of them with fatherly care. He was the best of storytellers as he had a fondness for history, his life experiences on the farm and Cardinals/Royals baseball. Many have enjoyed a meal with him at his favorite restaurant Betty's Cafe, shucked corn with him on hot summer days or spent time with him at family events and holidays. Being named after a president, Woodrow found a passion in being well-versed on the history of our nation and the office of the presidency. He was a proud Democrat and provided great insight to many political discussions. Anyone was lucky to have him as their partner playing the game of Trivial Pursuit.

He is survived by brother Donald Shepherd (LaDonna); Sister-in-Law Patsy Shepherd; Nieces Deborah (Donald) McCamy, Charla (Rodney) Ewart, Nancy (William) Healey; Nephews Douglas (Cherie) Shepherd, Mark (Jennifer) Shepherd; many great nieces and nephews; great-great nieces and nephews; and cousins.

Preceded in death by parents Eula Mae and Robert Lee Shepherd; brother Robert Lee Shepherd Jr., and infant brother Stonewall Jackson Shepherd, nephews Darrell Shepherd, Scott Shepherd, great nieces Abigail Shepherd, Devin Shepherd; and great-great niece Whitney Ann Duin.

She was born June 21, 1942 to Andrew and Eldora (Fitzgerald) Ruark in Weston, Missouri.

Patty married Danny Ellis July 16, 1961 and shared 58 years of marriage together. He survives of the home.

She was a homemaker. For a while, she worked at Atchison Leather Products and BMS. Patty was a member of Deer Park Grace United Methodist Church and a former member of Foursquare Church.

Patty enjoyed reading, traveling, crocheting, swimming when she was young, and being involved in church activities. She taught Sunday school and sang in the choir.

She was preceded in death by her parents and brothers, Andy and Paul Ruark.

Henry William Pilgram, Jr., 86, of St. Joseph, Missouri, passed away Thursday, May 28, 2020.

He was born July 14, 1933, in St. Joseph, Missouri, to Henry Sr. and Grace (Reiner) Pilgram. Henry married Lourene McLeod White on August 18, 1956.

Henry dedicated his life to God and the Christian responsibility to serve others. He was a professor and director of the social work program at Missouri Western State University for 20 years, retiring in 1995. Prior to that, he had served as a Presbyterian minister and a clinical social worker in Indiana, Illinois, and Missouri. He earned his B.A. at the University of Missouri, where he studied political science and was initiated into Phi Beta Kappa. He earned his Masters of Divinity degree at McCormick Theological Seminary in Chicago, where he met his wife, Lourene. He earned his Masters of Social Work at the University of Illinois. He completed his PhD in Comparative Religion in 1998.

Henry served in the U.S. Army Reserves as a 2nd Lieutenant. He was honorably discharged in 1963, and will be buried with military honors.

Henry was a notorious wit amongst his family and friends. His one-liners, love of cats, and old jokes were a crown jewel of the family folklore. He and Lourene never missed a ball game, a birthday, or a theatrical debut. Their grandchildren &amp; great-grandchildren are forever grateful for the love they provided.

Henry was a member of Ashland United Methodist Church and former member of Westminster Presbyterian Church, National Association of Social Workers, and the Academy of Certified Social Workers and Council on Social Work Education.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Lourene, and his parents. Survivors include daughters, Elizabeth Belcher (Mark, Mary Pilgram, Anne Ellis (Mark); grandsons, Brad Belcher (Samantha, Austin Belcher, David Ellis (Sarah Hoang, Andrew Ellis (Lindsay, Weston Pilgram; great-grandchildren, Oliver and Paloma Belcher; brother, Lawrence Pilgram (Myrna); and many nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, contributions would be appreciated to Ashland United Methodist Church or the Social Work Department at Missouri Western State University.

A private ceremony for immediate family will be held on June 3, 1:00 PM at Ashland United Methodist Church. Mary “Darlene” Young, 92, Overland Park, Kansas, passed away Thursday, May 28, 2020.

She was born April 23, 1928 to Paul and Vernia (Gibson) Anderson in Agency, Missouri.

Darlene Anderson married William Thomas Young June 12, 1954. They shared 63 years of marriage before he preceded her in death in 2017.

She worked at Jersey Cereal and Hillard Chemical before her first child was born, then later became a homemaker. Darlene was a member of the Moila Wreckettes. Additionally, she was a 4-H leader and taught cooking.

They shared 63 years of marriage before he preceded her in death in 2017.She worked at Jersey Cereal and Hillard Chemical before her first child was born, then later became a homemaker. Darlene was a member of the Moila Wreckettes. She was born October 26, 1994 to James and Suanne (Stinson) Turner.

Alyssa was a research assistant at University of Missouri- Columbia and a graduate student working on her master’s degree in occupational therapy.

She was a member of Huffman Memorial United Methodist Church, and Grace Evangelical, and CRU, where she served as a missionary in Athens, Greece. Alyssa was in numerous honors societies throughout her academic career. She graduated Magna Cum Lade from Missouri State University and was a member of the National Honor Society. She was also a member of Central High School choir and Band, involved in the Dance Arts Center and the Inertia Dance Company. Alyssa was University Ambassador of occupational therapy, a member of the Delta Zeta sorority and involved in the Joni and Friends Medical Mission.

She loved God. She enjoyed time spent with family and friends. She loved to laugh. Alyssa enjoyed traveling, singing, dancing, music and especially praise. She was always involved with children and Sunday school. She liked to cook and bake.

She was preceded in death by her grandfathers, Robert Yost, Harold Turner and Bob Stinson; grandmother, Nellie Yost; great aunt, Mary Stinson; cousin, Jacob Andrews; uncle, Steve Armes; and sister, Shaina Anne Turner.

She was born November 18, 1951 in St. Joseph, MO, daughter of Laura and Raymond Dilley. She married Patrick Curtis on October 26, 1989. Barb was a devout Christian, and was a member of Family Worship Center. 

Barbara was preceded in death by father, Raymond Dilley, mother, Laura Dilley.

He was born June 4, 1940 in Kansas City, MO, son of the late Blanche and William Orth. He married Jane Newberry on January 23, 1961 in St. Joseph, MO and she precedes him in death. He is retired from the United States Army after 23 years of service as a Seargant 1st class and is a veteran of the Vietnam War. He was awarded the Bronze Star and Viet Nam Service Medal. He also retired from Certain-Teed Corporation after 21 years of service. He was a Life time member of DAV Disabled American Veterans, American Legion, and the VFW Post 6760, also a member of the Masonic Lodge A.F.&amp;A.M lodge #71 Savannah, MO, Order of the Eastern Star #287. He attended the Sojurn Church. 

Leland was preceded in death by wife, Rutha Jane Orth, his parents, a son, Leland Andrew "Andy" Orth, 2 brothers, William and Wesley Andrew Orth.

Mary A. Browning, 85, St. Joseph, Missouri, passed away Sunday, May 24, 2020.

She was born December 8, 1934 to Aubrey and Louise (Davis) Carey.

Mary married Billy Browning August 21, 1954. They were married for 27 years before his passing in 1982.

She was an LPN for the Sisters Hospital before moving on to Heartland West. Later, she retired from the State Hospital.

Mary loved to be outside and take care of her flowers and maintain the lawn. She enjoyed attending her grandchildren’s activities. She was an avid Chiefs and Royals fan.

She was also preceded in death by her parents, companion, Dave Fetty; and son, Robert Bruce.

Mary A. Browning, 85, St. Joseph, Missouri, passed away Sunday, May 24, 2020.She was born December 8, 1934 to Aubrey and Louise (Davis) Carey.Mary married Billy Browning August 21, 1954. They were married for 27 years before his passing in 1982.She was an LPN for the Sisters Hospital before moving on to Heartland West. Later, she retired from the State Hospital.Mary loved to be outside and take care of her flowers and maintain the lawn. She enjoyed attending her grandchildren’s activities. Cathy Sue Grove, 70, Agency, Missouri, passed away Saturday, May 23, 2020.

She was born November 6, 1949 in St. Joseph, Missouri.

Cathy was a 1968 graduate of Central High School.

She married Edward Francis Grove August 30, 1974.

Cathy was a bookkeeper at Crouch Trucking and worked as a nurse’s aide at Mid-Buchanan R-5 School District before retiring.

She was a very kind and loving woman. There was nothing in life that she enjoyed more than spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren. She was a member of the Missouri Western Gold Coat Club and enjoyed attending the games and tailgating. A few other things that Cathy cherished were her yearly trips with her sisters-in-law, the trips to Sannibel Island with family, and the love for the beach. She also loved to spend time with her sister, Gina and brother, Ted. Cathy left a special place in all our hearts and will always be a part of us.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Raymond and Marion (Utterback) Buhr; and sister, Sharon Laipple.

Survivors include her husband of 45 years, Edward; children, Matt Grove (Amanda, Lee’s Summit, Missouri; Leigh Ann Shiflett (Bart, Green Valley, Missouri; grandchildren, Tyeson Humphrey, Tallon Shiflett, Taryn Shiflett, Mya Grove, Palmer Grove; great-grandchild, Tatum Humphrey; brother, Ted Wheeler; sister, Gina McClain and several extended family and friends.

Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers the family suggest donations be made to Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church.

He was born May 4, 1956 in St. Joseph, Missouri.

He was an outdoorsman; enjoyed fishing, kayaking, hunting, and riding his Harley Davidson motorcycle. Rickie’s hobby was remote control cars.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Donald Keith and Shirley Mae Nigh.

Survivors include his wife, Teri; girlfriend, Louise Gardner; son, Chad Nigh (Brenda); 1 grandchild; sisters, Cherrill George, Debbie Eldridge (Bill, Sharon Thomas (John, Annie Dowdy (Stephen, Tammie Huffman (Chris); brother, Bryen Nigh (Shelly); beloved dogs, Ladybug, Penny, Macy; several nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.
