BROWN COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating two suspects on multiple allegations after a traffic stop.

Just after 11p.m. Monday, a&nbsp;Brown County Detective initiated a traffic stop in the vicinity of 210th&nbsp; on U.S. 73 Highway based on an expired registration, according to Sheriff John Merchant.&nbsp; 

The detective discovered that&nbsp; the driver of the vehicle identified as 50-year-old Daniel Jennings of Hiawatha had a suspended license.

The passenger in the vehicle 37-year-old Tara Hamilton of Huron had an&nbsp; outstanding&nbsp; FTA Warrant out of Atchison

The detective arrested Jennings on requested charges of Possession of Marijuana, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, Driving While License Cancelled, Suspended or Revoked, No Proof on Insurance and Illegal Vehicle Registration.&nbsp; Hamilton was arrested on requested charges of Possession of Meth, Possession of Marijuana, Possession of Opiate and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia as well as the Warrant.&nbsp; &nbsp;

Wanted Kansas suspect caught transporting drugs

CLAY COUNTY —Two people died in an accident just after 3p.m. Wednesday in Clay County.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported a 2014 Toyota Scion driven by Delmy A. Vasquez, 26, Kansas City, Kansas, was westbound on MO 92 at County Road A.

The driver failed to yield and rear-ended a 2012 Ford Fusion driven by Alex M. Morse, 18, Kearney, Missouri.

After impact the Toyota crossed into oncoming traffic and struck the side of an eastbound 2015 Bluebird Gallatin R-V school district bus driven by Rolla C. Joyce, 45, Gallatin, Missouri.&nbsp; A passenger in the back seat of the Toyota was ejected.

After striking the bus, the Toyota spun around and struck a westbound 2023 Ford Explorer driven by Kenneth H. Holmberg, 42, Smithville, Missouri.

A passenger in the Toyota Iris Vallares Barahona, Kansas City, Missouri, was pronounced dead at the scene.&nbsp; EMS transported a second passenger in the Toyota Griselda Rodriguez Apolinar, 32, Kansas City, Missouri, to Liberty Hospital where she died.

EMS also transported Vasquez Perez and two passengers in the school bus, a 15-year-old girl and 15-year-old boy, both from Gallatin, Missouri, to Liberty Hospital. There were no others transported for treatment.&nbsp;Vallares Barahona and was not wearing a seat belt, according to the MSHP.

Even as you keep fireworks safety in mind, other safety
measures will make for an enjoyable Independence Day celebration.

American Red Cross spokeswoman Angie Springs says a little
time in preparation can make for a safe and fun 4th.

“So, the little things that we can do to hopefully make it
that much more enjoyable,” Springs tells KFEQ/St. Joseph Post. “Again, we all
enjoy watching fireworks in the sky, watching those big nighttime displays. We
just want to make sure everyone is safe, because again this is a holiday to be
celebrated, not one that you’re then having to deal with an emergency.”

Many like to hit the lake, the river, or the pool during these
summer days.

Springs says it’s vitally important to keep an eye on the children.

“Want to make sure that they are supervised in or near that
water. Make sure that you’re paying attention to them,” Springs says. “So, put
your phones down, keep your eyes on the water, make sure that those young
children have proper floatation devises. So, those lifejackets, make sure that they
are being safe when they’re in and around that water.”

The simple act of paying attention pays big dividends.

“It’s those little things that we can do during this holiday
season to help keep everyone safe,” according to Springs. “We want everyone to
have a great time and, again, its America’s holiday, you want to be out on the
water, you want to be enjoying those fireworks. But the more that we can keep
in mind those safety tips, the better off we’re going be. So just make sure
that you’re aware at all times.”

Springs advises to keep an eye on the weather and to get out
of the water and get inside at the first sign of lightning. Keep hydrated on
hot summer days by drinking plenty of water and limiting alcohol.

they at least&nbsp;achieve the skills of water competency: be able to enter the water, get a breath,
stay afloat, change position, swim a distance and &nbsp;get out of the water
safely. Whether swimming in a pool, at the beach or visiting a waterpark,
always swim in an area where lifeguards are on duty.

BEACH SAFETY&nbsp;If you plan to swim in the ocean, a lake or
river, be aware that swimming in these environments is different than swimming
in a pool. Be sure you have the skills for these environments.

WATER PARK
SAFETY&nbsp;Wear protective
clothing, including a hat and some kind of cover-up for when you’ve had enough
sun. Use sunscreen before leaving home and reapply during the day.

CLINTON COUNTY —One person was injured in an accident just before 7:30a.m. Wednesday in Clinton County.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported a 2010 Mercedes Benz driven by Ryan D. Keefer, 18, Lathrop, was westbound on Route V four miles southeast of Lathrop.

The vehicle traveled off the right side of the road, struck a culvert, became airborne, struck the ground and rolled.

&nbsp;Holt ambulance transported Keefer to Liberty Hospital. He was properly restrained, according to the MSHP.

Fourth of July will bring several travelers out for their holiday plans and the Missouri Highway Patrol says to be careful.  

Seargent Shane Hux with Troop H says as you hit the road, be sure to plan ahead with increased traffic and more construction happening.  

"Look for slower moving vehicles, whether that be pickups pulling campers, boats that are going to be out there being pulled by pickups," Hux tells KFEQ/St. Joseph Post. "So just allow (time), there's going to be some congestion out there in areas due to the construction, there's going to be traffic crashes so there's going to be lane blockages, things like that." 

While traveling for the Fourth of July, the Missouri Highway Patrol advises to be aware of extra distractions on the roads. 

Hux says if you see fireworks as you're traveling you want to watch, be sure to pull off the road.  

"We never recommend just stopping on the shoulder of the interstate or two-lane highway to get out and look at these," Hux explains.  "Find a safe location where you can get out and enjoy those." 

And Hux also says to be sure as you're traveling, to never fire any fireworks out of a vehicle, or out of a boat if you're on the water 

"Make sure you're in a designated area, make sure children are supervised when they are shooting these fireworks, and by all means do not discharge those from a motor vehicle when you're going up and down the highway," Hux says. 

The highway patrol will be out in full force starting at 6pm tonight through Sunday just before midnight.

As people pull their grills out this summer for cookouts and barbecues, there's an unknown danger that Mosaic Life Care wants them to be aware of. 

Dr. Cythia Brownfield with Mosaic says people should avoid using wire brushes to clean off the grill after cooking.  Brownfield says there's a danger of the wire bristles breaking off and getting into your food. 

"And end up having it lodged into their throat, or even worse swallowing it into their stomach, it can actually penetrate through your intestines and cause significant disease, possibly even death, and usually it requires a surgical emergency to correct it," Brownfield tells reporters. "These can break off very easily, they're hard to see." 

Brownfield says instead of those brushes, there are other options, including brushes that have coils rather than bristles. 

"There's also ones that are stone," Brownfield explains. "There are some that can melt, so you have to be careful that if you're cleaning your grill when it's hot you have to make sure that that grill brush is safe to use on a hot grill, also you can even just use your regular spatula that you flip your burgers with and use that to scrub."

Brownfield says approximately 130 cases a year have been reported, but it could be far more because of being under reported. 

Brownfield says while the number of cases reported may seem low, it's a problem that can easily be solved 

"So even though it's rare, the same thing we look at with consumre safety products, sometimes these injuries can be rare but if they're easily fixed, it's the right thing to do to make that shift," Brownfield says. 

Brownfield says cases became more prevalent as more people during the pandemic cooked at home and out on the grill.

There may be a hidden danger in cleaning your BBQ grill

A veteran Savannah police officer has been placed on administrative
leave while an investigation into the death of Savannah K-9 Horus continues.

Lieutenant Daniel Zeigler, Horus' handler, has been suspended with pay while
the Missouri State Highway Patrol investigates the circumstances surrounding
the death of the police dog last week.

Some Savannah residents gathered for a candlelight vigil
Sunday to honor K-9 Horus and have complained that Savannah officials buried
Horus without honors.

The Savannah Police Department has only acknowledged that K-9
Horus died after an overnight shift without giving any specifics about the
cause of death.

Savannah officer suspended as investigation into K9's death continues

HOLTON — Democratic Gov. Laura Kelly on Tuesday praised Republican Sen. Dennis Pyle’s work to sustain Kelly’s vetoes of earlier tax-cut packages to create a bipartisan compromise.

Kelly said that while she was in the Senate, she watched Pyle, of Hiawatha, “work tirelessly” for 10 years to eliminate a state income tax on Social Security.

State taxes will be&nbsp;<a href="https://kansasreflector.com/2024/06/21/gov-kelly-signs-tax-reduction-bill-passed-with-bipartisan-majorities-in-special-session/">reduced by $1.2 billion</a>&nbsp;through income and property tax cuts over the next three years. Kansas was one of 12 states to tax Social Security income. Kelly and Pyle worked together to eliminate that tax, which will save Kansas seniors more than $150 million in the first year, Pyle said.&nbsp;

Kelly and Pyle appeared together in Hiawatha and Holton to promote the bill and for a ceremonial bill signing. Both cities are in Pyle’s distinct. Kelly said they chose the cities to recognize Pyle’s work. After three vetoes of previous plans, Kelly approved a tax-cut package passed on the June 18 special session.&nbsp;

Pyle said his constituents are concerned with “ever-increasing” property taxes. A provision of the special session bill will exempt the first $75,000 of a home’s value from the statewide mill levy, compared with the current exemption of $42,000.

“I would like to see more property tax relief for all property types,” Pyle said. “But I appreciate Gov. Kelly for prioritizing property tax cuts.”

Kelly vetoed previous tax cuts proposals that were more expensive.&nbsp;

Pyle “stuck with me to sustain those vetoes until we got a package that really eliminated the Social Security tax and some other things, but also left enough in the coffers for us to be able to pay our bills and fully fund our schools,” Kelly said

The governor and lawmakers, sitting on a $3 billion surplus, were eager to cut taxes during an election year. GOP leaders originally introduced a flax tax plan, replacing the state’s three-tier income tax system with a single rate. Kelly vetoed that plan after an&nbsp;<a href="https://kansasreflector.com/2024/03/13/new-kansas-flat-tax-proposal-would-mainly-benefit-states-top-20-of-earners-analysis-shows/">analysis showed</a>&nbsp;it would mainly benefit the state’s top 20% of wage earners. The governor and legislative leaders eventually compromised on a plan that establishes a two-tier income tax structure, despite concerns that it still benefits higher wage earners.&nbsp;

“It wasn’t easy,” Kelly said. “Legislative leadership made multiple attempts at unsustainable tax cuts that would eventually set us back to an era of crumbling roads and bridges and crippling debt.”

Mike Pirner, spokesman for Senate President Ty Masterson, and Carrie Rahfaldt, spokeswoman for House Speaker Dan Hawkins, didn’t respond to requests to comment for this story.

Kelly said in her time in the Senate, “all people talked about” was property tax. Kelly said she would have preferred more property tax cuts. She said that could be discussed during next year’s session.

“I’m not sure the state could do much more,” Kelly said. “So we’d have to look for avenues. But we have to wait till the numbers come in.”

Laura Kelly on Tuesday praised Republican Sen. Dennis Pyle’s work to sustain Kelly’s vetoes of earlier tax-cut packages to create a bipartisan compromise.Kelly said that while she was in the Senate, she watched Pyle, of Hiawatha, “work tirelessly” for 10 years to eliminate a state income tax on Social Security.State taxes will be&nbsp;<a href="https://kansasreflector.com/2024/06/21/gov-kelly-signs-tax-reduction-bill-passed-with-bipartisan-majorities-in-special-session/">reduced by $1.2 billion</a>&nbsp;through income and property tax cuts over the next three years. Kansas was one of 12 states to tax Social Security income. Kelly and Pyle worked together to eliminate that tax, which will save Kansas seniors more than $150 million in the first year, Pyle said.&nbsp;Kelly and Pyle appeared together in Hiawatha and Holton to promote the bill and for a ceremonial bill signing. Both cities are in Pyle’s distinct. Kelly said they chose the cities to recognize Pyle’s work. After three vetoes of previous plans, Kelly approved a tax-cut package passed on the June 18 special session.&nbsp;The bill took effect July 1.&nbsp;Pyle said his constituents are concerned with “ever-increasing” property taxes. A provision of the special session bill will exempt the first $75,000 of a home’s value from the statewide mill levy, compared with the current exemption of $42,000.“I would like to see more property tax relief for all property types,” Pyle said. “But I appreciate Gov. Kelly for prioritizing property tax cuts.”Kelly vetoed previous tax cuts proposals that were more expensive.&nbsp;Pyle “stuck with me to sustain those vetoes until we got a package that really eliminated the Social Security tax and some other things, but also left enough in the coffers for us to be able to pay our bills and fully fund our schools,” Kelly saidThe governor and lawmakers, sitting on a $3 billion surplus, were eager to cut taxes during an election year. GOP leaders originally introduced a flax tax plan, replacing the state’s three-tier income tax system with a single rate. Kelly vetoed that plan after an&nbsp;<a href="https://kansasreflector.com/2024/03/13/new-kansas-flat-tax-proposal-would-mainly-benefit-states-top-20-of-earners-analysis-shows/">analysis showed</a>&nbsp;it would mainly benefit the state’s top 20% of wage earners. The governor and legislative leaders eventually compromised on a plan that establishes a two-tier income tax structure, despite concerns that it still benefits higher wage earners.&nbsp;“It wasn’t easy,” Kelly said. “Legislative leadership made multiple attempts at unsustainable tax cuts that would eventually set us back to an era of crumbling roads and bridges and crippling debt.”Mike Pirner, spokesman for Senate President Ty Masterson, and Carrie Rahfaldt, spokeswoman for House Speaker Dan Hawkins, didn’t respond to requests to comment for this story.Kelly said in her time in the Senate, “all people talked about” was property tax. WASHINGTON D.C. — The U. S. Postal Service filed notice in April with the Postal Regulatory Commission of mailing services price changes to take effect July 14, 2024. The new rates include a 5-cent increase in the price of a First-Class Mail Forever stamp from 68 cents to 73 cents.

The proposed adjustments, approved by the governors of the Postal Service, would raise mailing services product prices approximately 7.8 percent. If favorably reviewed by the commission, the price changes would include:

Letters (metered 1 oz.) will go from 64 cents to 69 cents.

Domestic Postcards will go from 53 cents to 56 cents.&nbsp;

International Letter (1 oz.) will go from $1.55 to $1.65.&nbsp;

The additional-ounce price for single-piece letters increases from 24 cents to 28 cents.

The Postal Service is also seeking price adjustments for Special Services products, including Certified Mail and money order fees. Notably, there will be no price increase for Post Office Box rental fees, and the Postal Service will apply a price reduction of 10 percent for postal insurance when mailing an item.

Price of stamps going up again this month

BROWN COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a suspect on drug allegations.

Just after 9p.m. June 30,&nbsp;Sac and Fox Police and Brown County Sheriff's deputies investigated a suspicious vehicle which was disabled&nbsp; int he vicinity of 320th and Kestrel Road, according to Sheriff John Merchant.

 K-9 Carla indicated on the vehicle and spoke with the driver and sole occupant Robert Hendricks, 64, Marysville&nbsp; 

Deputies arrested him on requested charges of Possession of Meth,&nbsp; Felony Distribution of Meth, No Drug Tax Stamp, Possession of&nbsp; Marijuana and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia.&nbsp; Investigators found 20 grams of methamphetamine, scales, pipes, baggies and more was located within the vehicle.

Kan. sheriff's K9 helped catch man allegedly selling meth

CLINTON COUNTY —One person was injured in an accident just after 2p.m. Tuesday in Clinton County.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported a&nbsp;2008 BMW 328i driven by Carolyn L. Dixon, 82, Turney, was northbound on MO 33 at 272nd Street three miles northeast of Plattsburg.

The car attempted to pass a northbound&nbsp;2022 John Deere 6120E driven by James T. Pyles, 36, Trimble.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The car struck the tractor as it was slowing and attempting a left turn.

Clinton County ambulance transported Dixon to Liberty Hospital. She was properly restrained, according to the MSHP. Pyles was not injured.&nbsp;

A
24-year-old north-central Missouri man has been sentenced to nine years in
federal prison for conspiracy to distribute fentanyl in northwest Missouri.

Lucas
Coltrain of Newtown pleaded guilty to selling fentanyl and laundering between $10,000
to $15,000 to a Mexican cartel.

Court
documents disclose Coltrain sold more than 5-Thousand fentanyl pills, pressed to
look like prescription drugs. Coltrain admitted to knowing people died after
taking the pills. He continued to sell the pills even after a friend died of an
overdose in July of 2021. Coltrain himself overdosed on fentanyl in August of
last year after being released on bond.

24-year-old sentenced federal prison for NW Missouri drug trafficking

BROWN COUNTY— On Tuesday, Governor Laura Kelly ceremonially signed Senate Bill 1 in Hiawatha and Holton. The bill provides responsible tax cuts for all Kansans without threatening the state’s long-term fiscal health, according to a media release from her office.

“This tax cuts package provides meaningful relief for hardworking Kansans while preserving our ability to continue fully funding our essential services and infrastructure,”&nbsp;Governor Laura Kelly said.&nbsp;“Now, because we have responsibly budgeted, Kansans will see significant tax cuts without sending us back to an era of fiscal shortfalls.”

Senate Bill 1, passed with bipartisan support, provides nearly $2 billion in tax cuts for Kansans over the next 5 years. The bill reduces property taxes by increasing the residential property tax exemption to $75,000, saving residential property owners more than $236 million over 5 years.

The bill also eliminates state taxes on Social Security income, saving Kansas retirees $152 million in the first year alone. Additionally, the bill reduces income taxes and increases the standard deduction and Child and Dependent Care Tax Credit.

“Throughout my time in the Legislature, I have championed meaningful tax cuts for Kansans,”&nbsp;said Kansas State Senator Dennis Pyle, District 1.&nbsp;“Eliminating the state tax on Social Security income has been a long-time goal of mine. DEKALB COUNTY —Two people were injured in an accident just before 10a.m. Tuesday in DeKalb County.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported a 2015 Ford Escape driven by Lane J. Blackford, 23, Macon, was northbound on U.S. 169 at Route E four miles south of King City.

The SUV rear-ended a 1995 Kenworth semi driven by Dylan L. Morgan, 26, DeKalb, who was slowing to turn East at Route E.

Grand River ambulance transported both drivers to Mosaic in St. Joseph. Morgan was not wearing a seat belt, according to the MSHP.

2 hospitalized after SUV, semi rear-end crash

St. Joseph won big in the state budget, even aside from the
nearly $10 million allocated to make improvements to Rosecrans Memorial
Airport.

State Rep. Brenda Shields of St. Joseph, who serves on the
House Budget Committee, says Gov. Mike Parson let stand a half million-dollar
appropriation for the downtown Children’s Discovery Center after vetoing a $1 million
appropriation for it last year.

“I think I was able to make the case with the governor a little
bit more clearly on the importance of what we were doing and it’s all about
relationships,” Shields says of the change of fortune. “I work well with the
governor’s staff and the governor as well.”

The $51 billion state budget also includes $7.5 million to
complete financing of the Convergent Technology Alliance Center which is
located on the Missouri Western State University campus and will be operated
jointly by Missouri Western and North Central Missouri College of Trenton. The budget
contains $2.1 million to upgrade the Chiefs Training Camp on the Missouri
Western campus. A $300,000 allocation will go to the Missouri Western Social
Work program.

Shields says she’s extremely pleased with St. Joseph’s share
of the state budget.

“As maybe, legislatively, how unsuccessful the session seemed
and the few bills that we passed, St. Joseph was really able to shine in the
budget this year,” Shields tells KFEQ/St. Joseph Post, giving credit to the
entire local legislative delegation. “I am incredibly proud of the dollars that
we were able to bring home to make sure that St. Joseph’s economy continues to
grow.”

The capital improvement projects aren’t the only beneficiaries
of the budget.

Missouri Senate Appropriations vice chair, Sen. Tony
Luetkemeyer of Parkville, points out Missouri Western State University also
benefits from a 3% increase in its core budget.

“The House ended up changing that and stripping it,” Luetkemeyer
tells KFEQ/St. Joseph Post. “The Senate added it back in and so Missouri Western
and all the other four-year institutions around the state will see a 3%
inflationary increase in their core appropriation which is really important to
make sure that higher education remains affordable to Missouri families.”

The governor took his time signing the state budget. Gov.
Parson signed the budget bills late Friday afternoon, just prior to the start
of the state fiscal year on Monday.

Tri-County EMS transported Hamm and a 16-year-old boy in the SUV to Liberty Hospital. Ferr was not injured.&nbsp; The teen passenger in the SUV was not wearing a seat belt, according to the MSHP.

ATCHISON COUNTY, Kan. —A Missouri man avoided serious injured after a rollover accident that occurred just 10:30a.m. Monday in Atchison.

According to Atchison Police Chief Mike Wilson, a 1997 GMC Sierra&nbsp; driven by Bryce Stratton, 22, Rushville Missouri, was eastbound in the 1800 Block of Main Street.&nbsp;

The driver lost control of the pickup. It struck the curb, two signs and rolled over onto its top. 

The driver, the only occupant in the vehicle, was able to get out of the truck uninjured, according to Wilson, Fire and EMS were on the scene to check on him. The vehicle was towed from the scene.

Missouri man escapes injury after rollover crash

Renovations on the Cook Road bridge in St. Joseph will cause a large portion I-29 within the city limits to shutdown much of tomorrow. 

Missouri Department of Transportation district engineer Marty Liles says to keep work on track the contractor will close I-29 to transport bridge pilings to the site. 

"If you're traveling from the north, going south on I-29, up at the Highway 71/229 Interchange, traffic will be detoured onto I-229 to go south," Liles tells KFEQ/St. Joseph Post. "If you're coming from say Kansas City and going north on I-29, you'll be detoured onto I-229 to the north at that point." 

The closure is expected to last through tomorrow from 4am to 7pm. 

Liles says the renovation project is completely removing the exisiting bridge and replacing it 

"So, it's a redecking, but with that it also includes a new sidewalk on the south side," Liles explains. "So, when it's all said and done it will be a new bridge deck with a sidewalk." 

Liles says weather could always play a factor with the contractor monitoring it closely. 

"Right now, it looks like the rain is kind of holding off and the contractor still thinks he can get that done in an ample amount of time on that," Liles says. "So, we don't anticipate any additional time that's needed with it, but it really depends on how much additional rain that we get and how bad the weather comes in." 

I-29 will be closed to northbound traffic from the Frederick Boulevard exit to the US Highway 36 exit.  I-29 will be closed southbound from the Business Route 71/ US Highway 59 to US 169 exit at Rochester Road from 4am to 7pm tomorrow.

Missouri Department of Transportation district engineer Marty Liles says to keep work on track the contractor will close I-29 to transport bridge pilings to the site. Heads up St. Joseph commuters, big part of I-29 closes Tuesday

Springfield state Sen. Lincoln Hough is running for Lt.
Governor in a crowded Republican primary.

Hough is one of six Republican candidates for Lt. Governor.

Hough, during a campaign stop in St. Joseph, says the position
makes sense to him, because as chair of the Missouri Senate Appropriations
Committee, he deals with veterans, senior citizens, tourism, and the other
aspects of the office. An office Hough says is expanding.

“One of the most exciting opportunities in my opinion is
something that then-Lt. Gov., now Gov. Parson really kind of kick started was
the Buy Missouri program,” Hough tells KFEQ/St. Joseph Post.

Politics can be a nasty business, even among Republicans.

Hough says the negativity in campaigns has prompted him to
limit the exposure to politics for his two young sons.

“I’m trying to raise respectful young men, right. And I don’t
see a lot of politicians today being the example that I want set for my kids,”
Hough says. “The negativity in campaigns, I know people will say it’s just part
of it, but it doesn’t have to be.”

Hough insists candidates don’t have to be negative.

“If you have a track record that you can run on and you can go
tell people what you have done and want to do, which is what we’re doing all
day every day, that’s what I think you ought to run on,” according to Hough. “I
don’t think you should run on tearing someone else down. So, we focus on
cutting a billion dollars in taxes, because my name is on that bill.”

The race also features another state senator:&nbsp; Holly Rehder of Scott City. The other
Republicans in the race for Lt. Governor are Dave Wasinger of Des Peres, Paul
Berry the Third of Maryland Heights, Tim Baker of Robertsville, and Matthew
Porter of St. Charles.

Sen. Hough running on record in crowded Lt. Gov. primary

A director filming in St. Joseph says he fell in love with the community while scouting locations. &nbsp;

Joshua Brandon, who also wrote the film '25 Miles to Normal', says in visiting the community St. Joseph chose itself more so than he chose it.&nbsp;

"We came through and we just met so many great people and people were just welcoming us with open arms, offering to help, showing us around town, so the story we were telling we couldn't come up with a better place, it was just perfect," Brandon tells KFEQ/St. Joseph Post. "And so, as I like to say, you chose us."&nbsp;

Another essential factor for choosing to film in St. Joseph, Brandon says, was the reinstatement of state tax film credits.&nbsp;

Brandon says when you are making an indie film like he is, there is a finite ceiling because your movie won't get pushed to large theaters or streaming services&nbsp;

Therefore, Brandon says these credits are essential in helping assure investors their investment can be recouped.&nbsp;

"And so, the tax credit becomes critical, because it allows us to create jobs in the state where we've committed to film and also to make sure we have something to come in right from the beginning," Brandon explains. "So, we can begin to get investors their money back, they can generate more confidence they've done the right thing, and ideally we close that gap when we make the sale, we make them a little bit of money, and everybody gets to come back and do it all again."&nbsp;

Governor Mike Parson reinstated the film tax credits last year.&nbsp; The last major film in Missouri to utilize these credits was 'Gone Girl' filmed in Cape Girardeau&nbsp;

While Brandon films, he is looking for local people to appear in the movie. &nbsp;

Brandon says the community has been fantastic to work with as the movie gets made. &nbsp;

Brandon adds that people interested in what they're doing have shown interest in being extras, which he is always looking for. &nbsp;

"Anytime you see a movie, if you ever see a movie where there's no one in the background something feels wrong and that's because in real life people are in the background, so we always want extras," Brandon says. Movie director says he didn't choose St. Joseph, St. Joseph chose him

Rosecrans Memorial Airport benefited greatly from the $51 billion
state budget signed into law by Gov. Mike Parson.

The governor waited until nearly the last minute to sign the
budget, signing it late Friday afternoon with the state fiscal year beginning
today.

State Sen. Tony Luetkemeyer of Parkville, the Republican vice
chair of the Missouri Senate Appropriations Committee, says the nearly $10 million
allocated to Rosecrans should put the 139th Airlift Wing in position
to receive the latest C-130 cargo planes.

“What that is going to do is it’s going to enable the 139th
to hopefully attract the new ‘J’ model series C-130s,” Luetkemeyer tells KFEQ/St.
Joseph Post. “So those are the new planes that are awarded by the federal
government. Last year, when we were up to get some of those new planes, we got
passed over for a variety of reasons.”

The state budget includes $7.5 million for the planning,
design, and construction of an aircraft maintenance facility for the 139th
and $2 million to move a fuel farm used by both military and civilian aircraft.

State Rep. Brenda Shields of St. Joseph, a member of the House
Budget Committee, agrees with Luetkemeyer’s assessment, saying the state
funding is vital in making needed improvements at Rosecrans.

“So, for us to be able to secure that 7-and-a-half million for
the maintenance building for the ‘J’ models will really make us competitive the
next go round of determining who gets the ‘J’ models and the moving of that fuel
farm was also an important part of that process to secure the ‘J’ models,” Shields
tells KFEQ/St. Joseph Post.

A year ago, the Air National Guard passed over the 139th
Airlift Wing in allocating the first round of the new, modern cargo planes, the
C-130J model. The Air Guard cited deficiencies that must be addressed before
the 139th gets the new planes.

While Gov. Parson approved the $7.5 million for the maintenance
facility, he cut $2 million from the $4 million approved by the General
Assembly to move the fuel farm, used by both military and civilian aircraft.

“You know, I wish he hadn’t vetoed (the $2 million), but I don’t
think that we’ll have a problem finding the match locally,” Shields says. “So,
I think we’ll be able to be successful in moving that fuel farm as well.”

up for the line-item veto.“People seem pretty confident that we will be able to come up
with the local $2 million match to be able to get that project funded,”

with officials from the 139th.The bottom line, according to Luetkemeyer, is the state has
come through with the money that should insure the 139th gets the
latest model of the C-130 cargo planes. “I think there’s no question these new investments in
Rosecrans are going to put us at the top of the list to get the new, ‘J’ model
airplanes out at Rosecrans and that is going to secure the long-term viability
of the 139th out at Rosecrans,” Luetkemeyer says.In all, Gov. Parson made 173 line-item vetoes, totaling $1
billion, to the state budget approved by the legislature. Parson says he
trimmed the budget to prepare the state for higher costs and lower revenue in
