CLINTON COUNTY —A Missouri woman was injured in an accident just after 7:30a.m. Thursday in Clinton County.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported a 2017 Jeep Cherokee driven by Lindsay M. Woods, 33, Lathrop, was southbound on Interstate 35 just south of Holt.

The Jeep rear-ended a 2007 Nissan Murano driven by Patricia L. Hinrichs, 42, Easton.

A private vehicle transported Hinrichs to Liberty Hospital. Woods was not injured. Both drivers were properly restrained at the time of the accident, according to the MSHP.

St. Joseph voters next Tuesday will decide a half-cent sales
tax designed to upgrade the city parks system.

City officials estimate the tax would generate between $50 and
$60 million over its 10-year lifespan. The tax has a 10-year sunset clause.

Chair Chris Clark with the St. Joseph Committee to Restore Our
Parks says the committee is composed of members who discussed what can be done
to improve the current parks system.

“Everyone has seen the shape that they’ve turn into over time.
They’ve slowly gotten worse and worse,” Clark tells St. Joseph Parks. “The Parks
(Dept.) budget continues to kind of decrease as well. They’re being asked to do
more with less. They’re having a hard time staffing people. They’re having
equipment that’s breaking down. So, they’re not able to maintain to the level
that we would like and level that we would expect.”

Clark also serves on an advisory board to the St. Joseph
Parks, Recreation, and Civic Facilities Department. That advisory board helped
the department settle on a list of improvements that would be funded through
the tax increase, which he says grew out of a discussion on what could be done
to improve the current park system. Members of that advisory board then decided
to form a committee to promote the half-cent sales tax, according to Clark.

Clark says St. Joseph residents are understandably proud of
their park system, but he adds that system has been allowed to deteriorate over
the years.

“I think people are proud of what we’ve got. We have a very
robust park system,” Clark says. “But I think if anybody spends any time in any
of these facilities, they’re going to walk in and they’re going to walk through
and realize that there are some issues that need to be addressed.”

The City of St. Joseph has a list of proposed projects on its
website. [Click <a href="https://www.stjoemo.info/1001/Proposed-Parks-Projects">here</a> for the list.] It is highlighted by nearly $12.8 million in
improvements to Krug Park. The extra funds would pay for $8.8 million in
improvements to the Noyes Complex, $3 million to the Bode Sports Complex, $2.8
million for Hyde Park, $2.5 million for the Northside Complex, $2.1 million for
the Civic Arena, among many other projects.

Approximately $4.5 million would be set aside for parks maintenance.

Clark urges residents to step up and support a proposal
designed to upgrade one of the city’s greatest assets.

“Too many times people say I wish they would do this, I wish
someone would do this, they need to fix that,” Clark says. “I think everyone needs
to realize that ‘they’ and ‘someone’ is us.”

The mother of a northwest Missouri five-month-old who died in
February has been charged with endangering the welfare of a child for not
reporting the suspected abuse.

Thirty-three-year-old Emily Huntsman faces two felony abuse
charges.

The father of Jaxon Ray Livingston is charged with killing the
child.

Law enforcement responded to a home in Gower on February 12th
to find Jaxon unresponsive. Doctors at Children’s Mercy Hospital in Kansas City
reported the infant suffered from abusive head trauma.

His father, 24-year-old Dillon Livingston, claimed the boy was
injured when he rolled out of a recliner. Later, Livingston confessed during an
interview with the Missouri Children’s Division he had handled the baby too forcefully
when he became fussy, according to the probable cause statement.

Livingston faces a second-degree murder charge in the death.

Now, Huntsman has been charged with endangering the welfare of
a child. Investigators accuse Huntsman of observing bruises on the infant and
the infant’s twin prior to the death. Authorities accuse Huntsman of failing to
report the abuse, which she first observed in November of last year.

Mother of 5-month-old killed in Gower now charged

The St. Joseph School District gears up for yet another year of school&nbsp;amidst&nbsp;pandemic.&nbsp;

Superintendent Doug Van Zyl says this school year will look very similar to last year’s.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

“Many of the same practices are going to be in place as far as cleaning and trying to keep students as&nbsp;separated&nbsp;as we can&nbsp;even though of course the distance is a little bit&nbsp;different,” Van Zyl tells St. Joseph Post. “Masking will be one of the things that we’ll probably continue to&nbsp;have to monitor and take a look at.&nbsp;Currently&nbsp;we are mask optional, but that's something that will probably get decided closer to the start of school, to be finalized.”&nbsp;&nbsp;

Van Zyl says the school district will still provide a virtual learning option.&nbsp;&nbsp;

“All of our schools have the&nbsp;face-to-face&nbsp;option as well but families had the choice to be able to sign up&nbsp;to be online or&nbsp;virtual&nbsp;if they chose to,” says Van Zyl.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Van Zyl says he hopes people will weight their options and decide what they want to do.&nbsp;

“That’s what’s really going to help us, is just people making the decisions to make good choices in regard to their&nbsp;health and what they think is the right thing to do not only for them but for those around them,” says Van Zyl.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Van Zyl says&nbsp;remote learning is still an option for the school district if and when it might be necessary.&nbsp;&nbsp;

“I hope and pray that we don’t get to the point where&nbsp;we have to go back to where we were over a year and a half ago back when COVID first kind of came on&nbsp;and everything got shut down that wouldn’t be something that I think any of us would want but I do think there’s&nbsp;a possibility for some remote adjustments throughout the year if cases continue to rise,” says Van Zyl.&nbsp;&nbsp;

All schools in the St. Joseph School District will start on August 23rd.&nbsp;

Both vehicle came to a controlled stop in a private parking lot.&nbsp; A private vehicle transported Stonebarger to Mosaic Life Care. Curtin was not injured. Both drivers were properly restrained at the time of the accident, according to the MSHP.

Missouri woman hospitalized after rear-end crash

The first full day of Chiefs training camp is in the books.

The whole team was on hand for the first full day of camp Wednesday morning. The Chiefs practiced in helmets and shorts at the Mosaic Training Fields for about two hours on a very warm day.

Heat indices were touching the mid 90s by the end of practice. Head coach Andy Reid says the training staff has done a great job making sure that players are staying safe in the heat.

"Our trainers do a great job making sure guys are hydrated," Reid said. "They test them prior and give them water breaks during practice. And once guys get to an x-number of plays, the trainers run in and give them a little water."

The heat did not stop around 3,000-4,000 Chiefs season ticket holders from taking in the practice. Chiefs CEO Clark Hunt says it just feels right to be back at Missouri Western for the camp with the fans on hand.

"It's so great to have our fans back at training camp," Hunt said. "I can think back to my experience as a kid coming to training camp with my dad and how special that is. It was great to see so many of our season-ticket holders here today."

A handful of players were held out of practice. Long snapper James Winchester and running back Darwin Thompson are in COVID protocol.

 Right guard Kyle Long is out with a knee injury. Coach Reid says he likely won’t practice again until after camp is over.

Linebacker Anthony Hitchens also tweaked his hamstring at Wednesday's practice. Others who were held out include safety Armani Watts (foot) and defensive end Malik Herring (knee).

One linemen who’s stepped up in Long’s absence is rookie Trey Smith out of Tennessee, who played the right guard spot to start camp. Reid says Smith has been very consistent so far.

"He showed enough to legitimately be in that position right now," Reid said. "He's got to compete. So, we'll see how all of that goes once we get the pads on."

Joe Thuney, Creed Humphrey, Orlando Brown Jr. and Mike Remmers joined Smith along the offensive line during first-team reps.

Linebacker Willie Gay, who's coming off of a torn meniscus this past winter, was one of the defensive standouts Wednesday, knocking down a couple of passes during both seven-on-seven and the 11-on-11 drills.

Chris Jones was switching between defensive tackle and defensive end throughout the morning Wednesday.

Receivers Demarcus Robinson and Mecole Hardman each hauled in some deep passes from Patrick Mahomes. Tyreek Hill had his moments, too. All-in-all, Patrick looked like Patrick. The turf toe injury is definitely in the rearview.

"You know, we're loaded," safety Tyrann Mathieu said of the offense. "It requires all of us on the back end to really put the work in. We're going against one of the best offenses in the league, and so every day we work with each other is only going to make us better."

The Chiefs practice again Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

Chiefs complete first full day of training camp on a warm Wednesday

A search is underway for the next Athletic Director at
Missouri Western State University.

Josh Looney will be leaving the St. Joseph campus to take a
similar position at the University of North Alabama in Florence September
first.

Missouri Western President Elizabeth Kennedy says the ideal
candidate must have the same personality, drive, and ambition Looney displayed.

“Also, it’s very important to me that someone have a sense of
wanting to join the St. Joseph community,” Kennedy says, pointing out Looney
and his family integrated into the St. Joseph community. “Me, personally, it’s
very important to me that this is someone who can come into our community, work
not only with our folks on campus, but also high schools, middle schools, those
kinds of things; really get the entire community into Missouri Western and what
our mission is.”

Kennedy says the university will use a search firm to find a
replacement. An interim Athletic Director will be named in the meantime.

Kennedy
says the position is an attractive one as the university comes out of the
difficulties of 2020.

“And I
think it’s a really good opportunity for someone who is maybe looking for this
kind of athletic opportunity to say, wow, Missouri Western they’ve got a lot of
great stuff going on and I want to be part of that team,” Kennedy says. “And I’m
very confident we will find that individual.”

Kennedy
says improvements to the St. Joseph campus made at the request of the Kansas
City Chiefs for their training camp makes Missouri Western look more like a
NCAA Division I program than a Division II program. Kennedy acknowledges the
fact that the St. Joseph campus hosts the Kansas City Chiefs training camp is a
selling point.

“But you
can feel the excitement. You can see it. You look out the window (of Spratt Stadium)
and you see where they’re going to be practicing,” Kennedy points out the
Chiefs draw thousands to the campus. “What an opportunity for an AD to come in,
to connect, to recruit, to fundraise, to engage with our community. It hits all
the bells and whistles right off the bat.”

She says she wants a candidate with the same personality,
drive, and ambition Looney displayed during his tenure.

Search underway for new MWSU AD

The summer heat continues to rise today and tomorrow.  

St. Joseph Health Department Clinic Supervisor Connie Werner says in this extreme heat, watch for the first stage of heat-related illness, heat cramps. 

“It especially is likely in elderly, or small children, people with pre-existing health conditions, people who have been drinking alcohol, and what will happen is that their muscles will tighten up and they’ll notice muscle pain,” Werner tells St. Joseph Post.  

Werner says there are a series of symptoms to watch for when experiencing the second stage of heat-related illness with heat exhaustion.  

“That is where a person will feel faint or dizzy, they may have excessive sweating, they might feel cool, or pale, or clammy on their skin, have some nausea or vomiting, their pulse might feel really fast, and they continue to have those muscle cramps,” says Werner.  

If you experience symptoms of heat cramps or heat exhaustion, Werner advises you to get cooled down quickly to prevent worsening symptoms, or illness. 

Werner says heatstroke, the most severe form of heat-related illness, is considered a medical emergency.

Werner says there are a series of symptoms to watch for when experiencing the second stage of heat-related illness with heat exhaustion. “That is where a person will feel faint or dizzy, they may have excessive sweating, they might feel cool, or pale, or clammy on their skin, have some nausea or vomiting, their pulse might feel really fast, and they continue to have those muscle cramps,” says Werner. Extreme heat hits the Midwest

Delta variant outbreaks are popping up more in Missouri and Kansas according to the Doniphan County Health Department.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The COVID-19 Delta variant continues to surge

ATCHISON COUNTY, MO. —Two people were injured in an accident just before 10p.m. Tuesday in Atchison County.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported a 2013 Peterbilt semi driven by Bryce J. Stuchlik, 39, Wahoo, NE., was eastbound on U.S. 36 at Interstate 29 in Rockport.

The semi struck the towed unit of a 2018 Chevy Equinox driven by Darwin C. Houghton, 72, Tarkio, that crossed both lanes of traffic while making a westbound turn onto U.S. 136 from Interstate 29.

Atchison-Holt ambulance transported Houghton and a passenger Georgia M. Houghton, 70, Tarkio, to Fairfax Community Hospital. Stuchlik was not injured.&nbsp; An air ambulance later transported Darwin Houghton to University of Nebraska Hospital. All three were properly restrained at the time of the accident, according to the MSHP.

Missouri couple injured after crash with a semi

LIVINGSTON COUNTY—Two people were injured in an accident just after 11a.m. Tuesday in Livingston County.

Motorcycle deaths have increased compared to this time&nbsp;last year according to state wide statistics.&nbsp;

Missouri Highway&nbsp;Patrol Troop H Spokesperson Jake Angle says they often look at the common factors when crashes occur.&nbsp;&nbsp; “Fail to drive within their lane, speed is a contributing factor in a lot of traffic crashes, and also drug and&nbsp;alcohol&nbsp;impairment&nbsp;is a big factor when we talk about traffic crashes as well,” Angle tells St. Joseph Post.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Angle says motorcycles are a much smaller vehicle out on the roadway, making them less visible.&nbsp;&nbsp;

“Much easier for people to lose in their&nbsp;blind spots, not as&nbsp;visible&nbsp;as&nbsp;you know a&nbsp;full-size&nbsp;vehicle such as a car or a pick-up truck something like that so&nbsp;right there you know that can make them a little bit more difficult to see when you’re driving&nbsp;down the road when like when you’re making lane changes or if they’re making lane changes, things like that,” says Angle.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Angle says traffic safety is a two-way street, no pun intended.&nbsp;&nbsp;

“it’s&nbsp;dependent&nbsp;on the driver of those&nbsp;motorcycles&nbsp;to make sure that they are&nbsp;as visible as they can possibly be, wearing more visible clothing, maybe having their headlight on. Some&nbsp;motorcycles,&nbsp;the head light flashes as they go down the road to make them more visible. Just things like that, also&nbsp;motorcycle&nbsp;drivers giving vehicles a wider berth,” says Angle.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The Missouri Department of Transportation says during the first half of the year there were more than 450 people that lost their lives in a traffic accident on Missouri roadways.&nbsp;Comparing the first half of the year in 2020 with two riders killed to this year with 6 being killed,&nbsp;there has been&nbsp;a 33% increase in unhelmeted motorcycle riders killed in&nbsp;crashes following the Missouri helmet law&nbsp;being lifted.&nbsp;

A private vehicle transported Gillespie to Mosaic in Albany. Grand River Ambulance transported Moffat to Mosaic in Albany. Grand River Ambulance transported a passenger in the pickup identified as Seth K. Hutchinson, 18, Albany, to Mosaic in St. Joseph. The occupants of the pickup were not wearing seat belts, according to the MSHP.

3 hospitalized after pickup rear-ends farm tractor

A deer struck the driver in the head. The driver lost consciousness and the motorcycle traveled off the road and overturned. Lifeflight transported Morrison to Mosaic in St. Joseph. He was wearing a helmet, according to the MSHP.

Pop was pronounced dead at the scene and was transported to&nbsp;Chapel Oaks Funeral Home. EMS transported a passenger&nbsp;Esteban Xol, 53, Davis Junction, Illinois, to the hospital in Hiawatha.&nbsp;

They were not wearing seat belts, according to the KHP.

KHP IDs victims in violent, Brown County crash

With quarterback Patrick Mahomes and a smattering of other Chiefs players already on Missouri Western's campus, and 'Welcome Chiefs' signs in yards all over town, the energy surrounding training camp in 2021 is palpable.

After being confined to Kansas City in 2020 due to COVID-19, Missouri Western leadership and the Chiefs organization made every effort to extend their agreement and bring camp back to St. Joseph in 2021, as long as NFL protocol allowed for it.

The negotiations were successful and the NFL gave the go-ahead, as roughly 30 players arrived in St. Joseph Friday and over the weekend to get some early work done.

On Wednesday, veteran players, and a few thousand fans, will be back as well to mark the start of the 11th training camp at Missouri Western. The first was in 2010.

"The excitement is palpable," Chiefs president Mark Donovan said. "I would say, over a decade later, to be standing here today and knowing how efficient we are and what a great partnership we have, it really does set us up for success and we're very appreciative of that."

Donovan personally thanked outgoing Missouri Western athletic director Josh Looney - a former Chiefs public relations employee who oversaw multiple contract extensions between the team and university.

Looney is grateful for that ongoing partnership, but certainly does not take sole credit.

"I think that trust and knowledge of what's important has certainly helped this camp and the (contract) extension," Looney said. "But, it's all about this community, elected officials and our whole campus making this happen. Mosaic and being a partner with them. It can't be just one of us, or camp will not thrive."

Looney secured a contract that guarantees Chiefs training camp in St. Joseph through 2024.

"If it wasn't a competitive advantage for (the Chiefs) on the football side, they wouldn't be coming back to Missouri Western," Looney said. "And likewise, if it wasn't a great fan experience and we couldn't deliver there, they wouldn't be coming to Missouri Western."

University president Elizabeth Kennedy expressed confidence that the relationship between the Chiefs and St. Joseph benefits all involved.

"I'd like to thank President Donovan and the Chiefs for continuing to make Missouri Western their summer training camp home," Kennedy said. "We have very much appreciated our association with the Chiefs and believe that we and the community have benefited greatly."

Kennedy will help in the search for Missouri Western's next athletic director. Looney announced Monday that he's taking the A.D. job at North Alabama - a school that transitioned to Division I in 2018.

While interviewing candidates, Kennedy believes the training camp aspect of the Griffons' A.D. job will be an appealing part of the position.

"What an opportunity for an A.D. to come in and to connect, recruit, fundraise and engage with our community," Kennedy said of training camp, as she gets ready to experience it for the first time as Missouri Western's president. "It's my first camp, and I'm so excited."

Mosaic Life Care, the primary sponsor for Chiefs' training camp this year, was also recognized by both Donovan and Kennedy on Monday.

Mosaic has been leading the effort in trying to get more people in St. Joseph and Buchanan County vaccinated against COVID-19. Only 20 percent of Buchanan County residents are fully vaccinated.

There'll be practically no fan-to-player interaction at training camp this year, per NFL protocol. No traditional helmet walk with young fans, and no autographs after each practice.

As thousands of fans from near and far get ready to descend on St. Joseph for the next three weeks, Mosaic Chief Operations Officer Michael Pulido encourages everyone to stay safe and to be a team player in the fight against the virus.

"Our theme this year at Mosaic this year has been, 'Be a team player and get vaccinated,'" Pulido said. "We fought the fight against COVID for four quarters and thought the game was over. Now, we're in overtime. Our best weapon is the vaccine."

 </figure>By TOMMY REZACSt. Joseph PostWith quarterback Patrick Mahomes and a smattering of other Chiefs players already on Missouri Western's campus, and 'Welcome Chiefs' signs in yards all over town, the energy surrounding training camp in 2021 is palpable.After being confined to Kansas City in 2020 due to COVID-19, Missouri Western leadership and the Chiefs organization made every effort to extend their agreement and bring camp back to St. Joseph in 2021, as long as NFL protocol allowed for it.The negotiations were successful and the NFL gave the go-ahead, as roughly 30 players arrived in St. Joseph Friday and over the weekend to get some early work done.On Wednesday, veteran players, and a few thousand fans, will be back as well to mark the start of the 11th training camp at Missouri Western. The first was in 2010."The excitement is palpable," Chiefs president Mark Donovan said. "I would say, over a decade later, to be standing here today and knowing how efficient we are and what a great partnership we have, it really does set us up for success and we're very appreciative of that."Donovan personally thanked outgoing Missouri Western athletic director Josh Looney - a former Chiefs public relations employee who oversaw multiple contract extensions between the team and university.Looney is grateful for that ongoing partnership, but certainly does not take sole credit."I think that trust and knowledge of what's important has certainly helped this camp and the (contract) extension," Looney said. "But, it's all about this community, elected officials and our whole campus making this happen. Mosaic and being a partner with them. It can't be just one of us, or camp will not thrive."Looney secured a contract that guarantees Chiefs training camp in St. Joseph through 2024."If it wasn't a competitive advantage for (the Chiefs) on the football side, they wouldn't be coming back to Missouri Western," Looney said. "And likewise, if it wasn't a great fan experience and we couldn't deliver there, they wouldn't be coming to Missouri Western."University president Elizabeth Kennedy expressed confidence that the relationship between the Chiefs and St. Joseph benefits all involved."I'd like to thank President Donovan and the Chiefs for continuing to make Missouri Western their summer training camp home," Kennedy said. "We have very much appreciated our association with the Chiefs and believe that we and the community have benefited greatly."Kennedy will help in the search for Missouri Western's next athletic director. Looney announced Monday that he's taking the A.D. job at North Alabama - a school that transitioned to Division I in 2018.While interviewing candidates, Kennedy believes the training camp aspect of the Griffons' A.D. job will be an appealing part of the position."What an opportunity for an A.D. to come in and to connect, recruit, fundraise and engage with our community," Kennedy said of training camp, as she gets ready to experience it for the first time as Missouri Western's president. "It's my first camp, and I'm so excited."Mosaic Life Care, the primary sponsor for Chiefs' training camp this year, was also recognized by both Donovan and Kennedy on Monday.Mosaic has been leading the effort in trying to get more people in St. Joseph and Buchanan County vaccinated against COVID-19. Only 20 percent of Buchanan County residents are fully vaccinated.There'll be practically no fan-to-player interaction at training camp this year, per NFL protocol. No traditional helmet walk with young fans, and no autographs after each practice.As thousands of fans from near and far get ready to descend on St. Joseph for the next three weeks, Mosaic Chief Operations Officer Michael Pulido encourages everyone to stay safe and to be a team player in the fight against the virus."Our theme this year at Mosaic this year has been, 'Be a team player and get vaccinated,'" Pulido said. "We fought the fight against COVID for four quarters and thought the game was over. Now, we're in overtime. Our best weapon is the vaccine."<figure>

Chiefs, Mosaic celebrate training camp's return to St. Joseph

Missouri Western State University Vice President of
Intercollegiate Athletics, Josh Looney, will be leaving the school to accept a
similar post at the University of North Alabama.

Looney says he wasn’t looking to leave.

“I right here had the best job in (NCAA) Division II. &nbsp;So, it would have to take something special to
draw me away from here,” Looney tells reporters at Spratt Stadium. “Hey, I grew
up in this league (MIAA). I love this league. The commissioner hired me when I
worked for the NCAA, our family loves St. Joseph. So, certainly not seeking out
opportunities, but again, sometimes opportunities find you.”

Looney came to Missouri Western in 2017 as the Athletic
Director. In 2019, he was promoted to Vice President of Intercollegiate
Athletics. He also serves as the
Interim Vice President of University Advancement and Executive Director of the
MWSU Foundation during the 2020-21 academic year.

Looney succeeds former Missouri Western Athletic Director Mark
Linder at North Alabama.

Looney says he wasn’t looking to leave the St. Joseph school,
but says an opportunity arose to take over the athletic department at the
University of North Alabama, which has transitioned from Division II to
Division I. Looney calls North Alabama a tremendous place with a very strong
reputation as a Division II powerhouse, moving up a division.

Looney says that when he looks back, it isn’t the wins and
losses that stand out, but the team he has assembled.

“People for sure,” Looney says. “I mean, you can look at
buildings and renovations and fundraising and the classroom success and all
those things, but if you don’t have buy-in from people to your culture; that’s
what your culture is, right? To where we know what’s important, we know what
our mission is and kind of that little bit of chip on our shoulder to, hey, let’s
not let the status quo ever be a thing here.”

Looney, who formerly worked for the Kansas City Chiefs, has been
instrumental in keeping the Chiefs at Missouri Western for their training camp.
He negotiated a new multi-year agreement with the NLF team in 2020. The Chiefs
open their 11th training camp at Missouri Western this week.

Missouri Western has enjoyed success during his tenure guiding
Griffon sports. 

The university reports that academically, Griffon student-athletes
have set new records for departmental GPA for seven consecutive semesters. In
the community, Missouri Western has been recognized with three consecutive NCAA
Awards of Excellence for its community contributions.

Eleven different Griffon teams made NCAA Division II postseason
appearances during his tenure.

Several facility improvements have taken place under Looney’s
watch, including a full renovation of the MWSU Fieldhouse, the Bill Snyder
Pavilion at Spratt Memorial Stadium, and locker room renovations for several
teams.

"I'm very sad personally and professionally to see Josh go," University president Elizabeth Kennedy said. "He's a great guy and he's done such tremendous things. Fundraising, facilities, the academic piece. That kind of legacy will set the stage very well at Missouri Western."

Missouri Western says the University will begin the search for
Looney’s successor immediately.

Looney
will begin his new duties at North Alabama in Florence on September 1st.

transparency, becoming the latest county to be included in the Missouri State Treasurer’s
Local Government Checkbook.

Presiding County Commissioner Lee Sawyer says the move became
official when State Treasurer Scott Fitzpatrick paid a visit to the Buchanan
County Courthouse.

“There are 114 counties in the state and we were 14th
on board. So, I think that’s pretty good,” Sawyer tells host Barry Birr on the
KFEQ Hotline. “It’s a good thing and it’s nice to have the state Treasurer come
in to your community and recognize the fact that we’re one of the leaders when
it comes to this kind of transparency.”

The Local Government Checkbook is an online data base
outlining all the spending decisions of the county. It can be accessed through
the Missouri State Treasurer’s Show-Me Checkbook website.

Sawyer says the name really discloses what you will find by
going to the web page.

“It is what it is. So, you get to see what all of our
transactions, whether it’s gravel that we purchased or services that we
provide; all kinds of things,” according to Sawyer. “It’s a neat deal.”
